Sprint to light up 4G in Los Angeles by December 1st

General

Here’s a quick little ray of sunshine for all those people that own a Sprint 4G device in Los Angeles, California. Ms. Stephanie Vinge, a member of Sprint’s corporate communications team, just fired off a tweet reaffirming that her company would add Los Angeles to its 4G market-portfolio before December 1, 2010. Sprint customers: keep your finger on your device’s 4G trigger, WiMAX is on its way.

    WiMAX is not 4G.

no one cares, its still a helluva lot better than “3g”, and thats what matters…

      • Anonymous

If people would actually look in to the definition of 4g they would care! Its total BS that they get away with calling it that.

      • Pete

I disagree… most people only care about the speed. And right now, even T-mobiles HSPA+ (3g) network is as fast as Sprints “4g” network. Even if Sprint was using the next version of Wimax (which IS 4g), the speeds probably wouldn’t be that much faster because of the current backhaul limitations…

      • Anonymous

@ Pete not just backhaul phone processors probably couldn’t keep up with 100mbps. When you double or triple the network speed pages dont load double or triple speed.

which brings me back to my point. How can you call it 4g, LTE HSPA+ or WiMax when they are not. A pinto isnt a Bugatti, even is the dealership says it is. The fact that these companies are saying they have 4g networks, even though they are only operating at 1/5 or less the actually theoretical through put is where i take issue. Rather than dupe the public with cheap gimmics to buy yourself some time, just build the infrastructure to support the real deal

Non of the governing bodies that regulate Sprint have a legal definition of 4G first of all. Second everything Sprint markets as 4G is upgradeable to 4G and will be once 4G equipment is available for widespread purchase. Like any of you would pay what like $500 a month just so you can say you have real 4G on first run hardware.

Sprint, VZW, and the rest conduct business in the real world. If you worked for any of the “Kinda 4G” companies you would be swearing up in down it’s 4G too.

And if generally speaking Analog is 1G, TDMA is 2G, CDMA is 3G, then OFDM must be 4G. Sprint could easily say our network is based off 4G tech, and will shortly be upgraded to meet 4G standards.

True, and it’s understandable that it is misleading, but from a marketing standpoint it would just sound retarded to be like “hey, get this phone, and browse the web at 3.5G speeds”

Fix your comments BGR.. I meant to say… Maybe Sprint should say the “3.5G network that’s based off 4G and will be soon upgraded to 4G”

But you keep auto filling old comments and not letting them be erased..

Get ready for some spotty WiMAX coverage. Unless you live next to a tower and don’t move around much, you will probably disable WiMAX anyway. Poor handoffs between towers (if the signal doesn’t drop), battery drain, worthless in-building coverage. No wonder Clear is doing so poorly.

    • Dr Frankieevans

I think you have a device issue I move around often in 4g mode with no problem…….

  • Mgl323

BGR, as someone who lives in LA, Sprints/Clearwires Wimax is up and running over here already..Except not officially of course.

  • Vincentfalls

Hopefully they will bring it down to San Diego next.

  • 4GDC

When are they going to make 4G official in DC? I’m writing this comment over Sprint 4G, so it’s clearly here.

omfg SF/Bay Area needs it NOW, I’m SICK of waiting!

  • CER

This isn’t news; December 1 has been the target date for LA for a while now.

  • phone_booger

Looks like we got some 4G in Sacramento, too. I’m on it right now.

  • jimmiekain

I’m on 4g right now in Ontario California its about 45 mins from LA averaging 6.5mb with just one or two bars of wimax. Once its turned on officially on Dec. 1 will I see an increase or will it stay the same? Follow jimmiekain on Twitter if you wanna see a screen shot of my Evo on 4G doing a speedtest.

Thats good news to see some 4G love in the IE.. I tested it out in LA and Vegas earlier this year…

We all read the same damn article. We know what the itc said. You people aren’t smart to just keep repeating it. If you remember, the itc’s standards for 3G required simultaneous voice and data. As you can see, that wasn’t highly regarded. Only ignorant att fan boys woukd say that Sprint and Verizon’s EVDO revA isn’t 3G. But, who knows, they may not be that naive. Nobody cares what the itc says, so stfu already.

Just so you are well aware – Sprint has NO 5GB cap on data plans on phones. 5GB cap is in place for Phone-As-Modem tethered plans (these do not include Mobile Hotspot plans) as well as Netbook and Data Card plans. Sprint has stated and there is written proof and documentation on their site if you did your homework that there IS NO DATA CAP ON PHONES!

The $10 Premium Data Add-On isnt an add-on at all, its a requirement and should not be called an Add-On at all. It does NOT uncap any data – Sprint has unlimited data in 3G and 4G within their own network for the EVO and EPIC.

So please, get your facts straight and do not misinform people who can easily check the site and see that you are not telling the whole story.

4G 3 – 6 Mbps More than 10 Mbps All you can stream, browse, email, chat, watch and game while on our network.
3G 600 Kbps – 1.4 Mbps Up to 3.1 Mbps All you can stream, browse, email, chat, watch and game while on our network.

Just so that you know, every carrier has a 5GB cap on phones. They are all being deceptive by saying unlimited. Surely, you’ve seen the whining about this issue.

Green light go in downtown Manhattan Beach NOW!
    8Mbps down; 824 Kbps up.

    I now feel a little less ripped-off by $10 each month…

    • Anonymous

I’m not even in a 4G area. Probably won’t be for quite some time. I don’t feel ripped off by the $10 fee. First, it’s not a 4G fee. Secondly, it uncaps the data. Lastly, even with that fee, Sprint still has the best data plan. Did I mention, it has no cap? Some people just like to complain.

      • Anonymous

And some people just feel the need to talk out of their a$$…

The $10 fee is quoted by Sprint precisely as a 4G fee.

For you to attempt to defend it a means to “uncap the data” does show me one thing though… that you are their marketing department’s ideal rube. The fee was, of course, an incremental up-charge on top of a plan that was ALREADY uncapped. It did noting… except cost us more money.

But you keep thinking that… and keep writing them check checks. Maybe they’ll send you a shiny button.

Come to think of it… it doesn’t surprise me at all that you’re not in a 4G area.

      • Anonymous

A quick check of facts, and we’ll see who is talking out of their ass. The plan was most definitely capped at 5 GB. Also, sprint has stated many times that it is not a 4G fee. They refer to it as a premium data fee, because these phones use more data. The reason they charge it, is because their data plans are dirt cheap. If you don’t like it, go get get your plan with vzw or att, and add that 5GB capped $30 data plan on top of it. You are wrong on both of your statements. So, don’t be such an ass.

      • Drew

You can say what you want, the $10 ADDITIONAL charge to your data plan is bull$#!+. Friend of mine got his EVO (after waiting a few weeks on a waiting list) in late August and the Sprint Rep told him they should have 4G by the end of September. It’s almost mid-November, how do you justify the “extra” $30 he’s already paid for “services” non rendered?? Not to add the talk of Hesse taking away unlimited data. It’s a ripoff and I feel sorry for EVO owners. You can’t tell me you’re still gonna have 4G reception as soon as you walk into a mall. What’s the use? It’s garbage…

      • Anonymous

The first point is that your friend knew about the charge, and bought the phone anyway. No room for complaining. Secondly, THE FEE IS A DATA ADD-ON FOR INCREASED DATA USAGE AND UNCAPPING OF DATA…NOT 4G. So, your argumenr about 4G and malls is moot. As for 4G, Give it time. It wasn’t too long ago that there was no signal in malls period. They had to put repeaters in. Regardless of what you think the $10 charge is for, everybody that wants the EVO or EPIC agree to the charge. Sprint has the right to charge it. It still costs A LOT less than anybody else. Sprint includes data and text in your plan, vzw & att charge you $30 for data, and another $20 for text. So, do you really want to bitch about a measly $10? Look at all you get with Sprint. Stop whining, or stfu.

I’ve had 4G in LA since March…I guess this is when they start advertising? Anyways…its awesome!

    • Iplntwo

Yep it’s called Corner’s of the World

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/William-Diaz/100000639956723 William Diaz

Ive had conversations with Stephanie Vinge before – and she refuses to disclose when 4G will actually light up. This is news, and likely had to be disclosed ONLY because Sprint is now hurting in their 4G network subscribers and people have waited way too long for major cities like NYC, SF, LA and many others to light up…. Sprint at one point said 4G would light in LA and SF in Summer 2010 – but we all know what happened.

  • Lm1234

There is no record of 4G in Orange County yet it works in certain areas like Newport Beach & Costa Mesa. So Fast!
