Motorola’s DROID 2 Global lands on Verizon Wireless’ website; $199, 1.2GHz

General

We knew that we would have the opportunity to pre-order Verizon Wireless’ DROID Pro today, but we didn’t really expect to see the DROID 2 Global. Late last night, Verizon quietly added the D2 Global edition to its handset lineup; the device is live on the the site and available to order. The spec sheet on the DROID 2 Global mirrors that of the original DROID 2, with the exception of an added quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS radio for world roaming capabilities, an upgraded 1.2GHz processor, and a white exterior (we’re assuming black is coming). The more worldly Droid 2 will retail for $199 with a 2-year contract and, if all rumors hold true, will completely replace the original D2 in the next month or so. Go ahead, hit the read link and have a look for yourself.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Faster processor because going across the pond requires more horsepower……clearly.

Been out of contract for a year now, if I weren’t waiting for the big red iphone, I’d be all over this.

It’s not going to be black but rather navy blue like the current model. The 2 and 2 global look identical

Big deal if its a 1.2ghz processor? Thats not even that much faster than the regular 1ghz ones? And in fact, you wont even be using all 1.2ghz of that speed…

    This phones overrated.

Since Blackberry is the other global phone on VZW of note I would say this is a big deal to some who you know, like to work and play.

The branding on these phones is pretty pathetic unless you’re living in your mothers basement. Global dominator, 0-60 in seconds, runs on a jet engine. Is this a toy or a phone?

Does Verizon ship these phones with the sims unlocked yet?

  • Sad

So to be a global phone, does that mean that this accepts sim cards? Meaning I could buy one off contract and use it here in good ol Canada?

Black is showing as available in VZ site as well.

If I don’t see something better with 2.2 on it in the next two weeks, I’ll probably pick this up and trade my wife for her Fascinate. She’d rather have a physical keyboard…. and by then the Fascinate will have 2.2. lol.

Yes, its sim and you can use it in Canada.

You can probably find some way to unlock it and use it on AT&T as well.

Wait a sec are you saying this thing can actually take a Rogers sim and work flawlessly on its network? Holy crap I my long wait might actually be over O_O!!!!!

I don’t understand why Verizon and Moto even bothered with the CDMA-only Droid 2 when this was going to come. Seems like a much more worthy successor, one that actually is of note. I feel bad for the people who bought the Droid 2 when this came out barely 2 months later, like my friend hahahaha

How many droids are out their, or at big red?????

You have to laugh….the phone has 52 reviews on the Verizon sit that gives it a 4.5 star rating. No one even has one yet Verizon in good ethical business practice should turn the rating system off when not yet release and offer a ‘Buzz” type can’t wait to get one type posting alternative … even has it in their hands yet..HA how lame.

I cant wait so that I can actualy hold one but I am not going to raed reviews for vaporware!

Recap of some of the many highlights I’ve had with this ‘new and improved’ Droid:

    1) Lockup and reboot on its own when adjusting and setting built-in alarm application
    2) Lockup and needing to pop out battery and reinstall to get out of lockup when adjusted alarm
    3) Lockup when making calls
    4) Lockup and reboot on its own when making calls
    5) Audio quality is CRAP for both receive and transmit audio, not only according to my ear, but when my Wife has used the phone (this happens whether its the built-in earpiece, speakerphone mode or with a Bluetooth earpiece), there’s no comparison (in a bad way) to Droid 1.
    6) Corporate (Outlook/Exchange) calendar appts missing on the converged calendar that I can see plain as day on my desktop)
    7) “Push” mail seems to be more like ‘nudge’ as it’s continually way behind (a couple hours since some messages have shown on the laptop before they show in Corporate mail). This was never the case with TouchDown that I used on Droid 1, of which I resorted to about ten months ago after suffering through two plus months of the crap app built-in Corporate Mail on Android V2.0 & 2.1.
    8) I almost forgot the 16GB uSD that I moved over from D1 to D2G that only shows up as a 7.4GB card (I’m not talking about Available Space, that’s what it says for Total Space. So there’s a 50% space penalty for using a uSD ‘upgrade into D2G? Yes, I’ve reformatted the card a couple times, same result. Kind of like how many times can you reset to factory defaults and expect to get a different result.

    More neuscience items:
    1) battery hog compared to D1 (can deal with this for the responsiveness over D1 if it was a reliable device overall
    2) the stupid ‘bulls eye’ highlighting around the cursor in some of the apps
    3) I don’t see a way to ‘pin up’ at minimum the Cc, and preferably the Bc line too, in the built-in mail app (Does Google ever ‘finish’ anything or is part way good enough for them? Is Motorola OK in accepting a half-baked O.S. and app set?
