Windows Phone 7 Marketplace now home to 2,000 apps

mobile

Following concerns that Windows Phone 7 wouldn’t have enough titles support to satisfy the new wave of app-hungry smartphone users, Microsoft confirmed Monday that developer support has exceeded expectations. In a post on The Windows Phone Developer Blog, Microsoft’s Todd Brix announced that the Windows Marketplace for Mobile is now home to approximately 2,000 apps and games compatible with Windows Phone 7 devices. The figure is nearly double the company’s target, which was set last month. Microsoft also announced that the Marketplace is fully open to app submissions, and that it currently has 13,000 registered Windows Phone 7 developers. Windows Phone 7, which launched Monday in the U.S., is Microsoft’s attempt to reclaim consumer interest in its smartphones. Continued developer support is one of several keys to the success of the platform, and Microsoft certainly has an uphill battle ahead of it considering the massive app war chests held by Apple and Google.

      Wow captain obvious, good research!

Two thousand whole apps?! Sounds like the Palm Pre when it launched.

Of course the difference is MS actually has a developer community. One thing is for sure: they have their work cut out for them. A universal truth is that apps sell phones. People will forgive a lot of performance issues if there is a robust developer community pumping out games and productivity apps. And the occasional fart app.

actually… do some research….. WebOS launched with under 100 apps and took about 6 months to reach 1000apps….

I still think WebOS is the best OS….

      WINDOWS PHONE 7 ROCKS!!!!!

A good start if you ask me. It would be funny though if they surpass Androids Market by the end of 2011.

Android went from 8k or 10,000 apps Nov 6th last year to a little over 100,000 by Nov 6th this year off the strength of the Motorola Droid and the phones that followed. Now LTE Androids will be launched in 2011 as well as stronger 3G ones. By the end of 2011 Android will have nearly 300,000 apps at this pace. W7P market won’t come close by the end of 2011. W7P is a neat looking OS and great hardware but it still lacks essential things that Android and even the purposely crippled iphone lack. until those are addressed and W7P goes through the whole ‘how safe are the apps/can they be stolent and used without paying” thing that now goes on they’ll be fighting with potentially reborn WebOS and a slow dying Blackberry for most apps after the big 2.

Wait a sec. Looking at the market online (because I don’t have a Windows Phone 7), it looks like most of the 2000 apps are for WM6. Will these apps also work with Windows Phone 7 because that’s a game changer. I’ve dumped a lot of money into WM6 apps and I thought they wouldn’t work on the new OS.

If they DON’T work, I doubt there’s more than 200 actual Windows Photo 7.

    Sorry, double post.

Wow 2000 whole apps’, what will Android and iOS do with all that competition? Does anyone know if Windows has an app’ to help repel a ‘Contract Lawyer in Manhattan’; that sure would be handy.

I haven’t found a single fart app yet.

That speaks volumes to me over others.

Wtg MS, the ball’s rolling, now to see if it will snowball into something bigger.

I wonder how much cash Microsoft passed out to get these developers on board for launch.

Good to see we have a third horse finally entering the race. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I hope M$ gains a foothold in the mobile market. A good WP7 launch will make Google and the turtleneck gang in Curpentino pull out all the stops and really offer users some cool eye candy. You gotta love healthy competition between the big tech 3.

Haters these days. Wp7 been out for 20 hours and it already has 2000 apps. The os looks awesome. And for the few Android fanboys, you can’t say sh*t on how they’re starting off. And you can’t say it was “rushed” either. The first android phone looked like a brick, had an inferior processor, a small screen, no memory, and Android 1.5. Android 1.5 for christ sakes and only got as far as 1.6. That’s like a fat person entering a race and having a heart attack one step in. It ran vanilla android to. This is going to be huge. Face the facts, iOs, Android, and Wp7 are all good competitors and the market share is going to start evening out over time.

Actually it launched with 1.1 do your research

    • Mrcurious101

only reason why android was inferior was because of technology when it was released. 500mhz was fastest thing out 2 years. everyone improving.
i thought Dell launched there phone today as well…

  • offdayJB

woohoo! go M$! let’s hope the Marketplace experience will be a lot more smooth when finding the higher quality apps, compared to Android’s..
