BlackBerry Torch 9800 Pure White unboxing

mobile

You thought we’d let the Great White Hype go without an unboxing? Nope! We have RIM’s flagship BlackBerry device — the Torch 9800 — donned in almost all white armor, and while you would think we wouldn’t have any feedback for just a color change, we do. Here is the deal… our opinion of the white iteration of the BlackBerry Torch 9800 is — obviously — subjective, but… to our eyes it does look incredibly clean. If only the entire handset were white, we’d be in love. RIM kept the main frame of the device in soft touch black and this includes the camera lens cover on the rear of the handset. It breaks up theĀ aestheticsĀ of the device and we’d have loved if “Pure White” meant purely white. One huge, glaring problem with the all white Torch that we can’t seem to move past? When using the device in dark lighting conditions, the backlit buttons are blurry. This seems to be because of there being no “backing” on the underside of the keyboards keys. It’s hard to explain, but it is ridiculously, mind-blowingly annoying, and is actually preventing us from switching to the lust-worthy BlackBerry 9800 Arctic Winter edition. Don’t just listen to us break it down for you textually, though, we have our unboxing photos all ready to go in our BlackBerry Torch 9800 Pure White gallery below!

Wait, wait… how can they have a white model? I thought Apple said white was impossible?

    • Alex

Notice that it aint’ really all white. The home button matching the whiteness of the entire face was Apple’s challenge. Notice that the Torch’s home button is black.

There is no “home” button on BlackBerry smartphones, as none is needed. The trackpad allows you to quickly navigate through functions. Holding the track pad provides options for whatever you are pointing to. Holding the menu button allows you to move to a different task. Under BlackBerry 6, you spend very little time on the home screen. With its true multitasking, you simply jump directly from app to app.

Finally, a phone to match my white patent leather shoes! After two weeks of the Torch I went back to my Pre+. I spent all my time looking for things in that miserable menu system they call OS 6.

    • Randy Dearborn

Obviously, you never learned how to use OS6. You don’t have to go through menus to do most functions now. Click and hold with the trackpad. Options come up as easy to navigate icons.

  • Riley Biers

Is it really that hard to make the trackpad white also?

    • The Church of SteveJtology

That’s just so old people know which way around to hold it.

    • George

RIGHT?! Fucking RIM…what are these people smoking?! Usually I’d want some, but if it makes me dumb and incompetent, NO THANKS.

Not hard but as any former trackball user can tell you, white surfaces that get rubbed usually turn brown very quickly.

    • zukidrvr

It’s impossible to make the trackpad white. It is a photo sensor that sees your fingerprint passing over its surface. It’s actually transparent red.
