Samsung Galaxy S now #1 in Japan, displacing iPhone 4

mobile

New estimates released Thursday by Japanese market research firm BCN place the Samsung Galaxy S at the top of Japan’s smartphone charts. The powerhouse it displaces is none other than Apple’s 32GB iPhone 4 — a handset that took Japan by storm when it launched earlier this year. For 18 weeks straight, the iPhone 4 had been Japan’s top seller. In its debut week, however, the Galaxy S managed to take the top spot, though only when considering the 32GB and 16GB iPhone models individually. Whether or not the Android 2.2-powered smartphone can maintain pace remains to be seen, but Samsung should certainly be pleased that it has a hit on its hands in Japan.

I Love it! If only it had some froyo love already it would be #1 all around the world!

when it stays for 18 weeks at #1, then it will be a success, until then NOPE!

’18 weeks at #1, then it will be a success…’

        Bitch.

      • Mr8820

According to the article, Sammy took over the #1 spot IN ONE WEEK!

Yeah, that’s because the Iphone has already been out for 18 weeks. This article is saying the Galaxy S is the top selling phone for the week, not that it’s the #1 in marketshare.

So Mike Gonzalez is right. This will be impressive if it stays at #1 for 18 weeks.

I wonder how the swype keyboard is used for Japanese text input.

    • Baester

for inputting kanji, i can’t see how it would be used. hiragana and katakana might work but wouldnt be fluid at all…

Use Access’s Graffiti and write it the way you expect, or just switch back to the normal Android keyboard and use qwerty keyboard for it like every asian does it?

Hands down best phone Ive ever had. Gorgeous 4″ SuperAMOLED Gorilla Glass screen in a thin and ultra light package. My coworker who has an iPhone 4 is always messing around with mine. =) Retina disp is nice but I prefer the bigger screen with rich color that pops.

your screen has a blue tint to it. hold it up to another phone and look at anything white….it looks blue.

I think it’s those asian android commercials. They’re so awesome.

That’s only because Duct Tape is no longer available in Japan since, they used it all to trap Godzilla after World War II.

This made me laugh, but… what?

    The mighty has fallen!

The iPhone has been in the 1 spot for 18 straight weeks, I mean does anyone thought it will remain their for ever? Let’s see how long can the galaxy hold the spot, cause 1 week means nothing.

I’m guessing it’s only no.1 because they can’t tell the difference between the two. Samsung blatantly copied them and it’s probably cheaper.

      Obvious hater is obvious

Yes, that glass back and squared-off edges of the iPhone 4 is so prevalent on the Samsung, and we see “SAMSUNG” emblazoned on the top of every iPhone. Why, they’re so similar it would take a sleuth of Sherlockesque proportions to deduce which is from which vendor!

    • Anonymous

yes obviously japanese wouldn’t be able to tell the difference because they only been inundated with better phone technology for years and these new phones are just indiscernible to them. So obvious these japanese are just not smart enough to tell the difference

Did Japan get Froyo before everyone else or is that a typo and they got Android 2.1 just like every other countries’ Galaxy S?

    • Anonymous

Until the Vibrant gets Froyo (and root?) everybody else (like Japan) getting Froyo is just insulting and keeps me from even looking at it.

Comparing apples to oranges. The Galaxy is on docomo which controls almost three times the subscriber base as Softbank.

Proving – once again – Apple chooses poorly when it comes to partners…

Credit where due, Way to go Samsung.

Mind you, one is a smartphone, the other is, to make some feel smart.

The reality distortion field weakens outside of the states.

Why would they consider the 32GB and 16GB individually? So combined the iphone 4 is still #1.

  • Anonymous

Samsung is #1 in Japan over Apple…cuz that’s the home product. Never thought the Iphone would dominate the Asian market with the choices they have in Asia especially in Japan.

      Samsung is Korean… FOOL
