Hulu Plus exits private beta; now available to all

Services

Hulu Plus, a premium Web-based video streaming service, is now available to the public. Rob Wong, product director for Hulu Plus, made the announcement Thursday on the company’s blog, saying the service is now available without need for an invitation. Hulu provides a service that allows users to stream movies and TV episodes for free to computers. Hulu Plus, which costs $9.99 each month (for the time being, at least), offers enhancements such as additional content and the ability to stream to more devices like Apple’s iPhone and the Sony PlayStation 3. Rumors suggest interest in Hulu Plus has been minimal though, thanks to widely available free content as well as subscription competition like Netflix’s Watch Instantly. Hulu claims to have had a successful closed beta period, however, and it will continue to expand the service to more devices during the current open preview period.

Shouldn’t that headline really say “available to all in the USA”?

Hulu is a USA only service and doesn’t work on the majority of teh Internets dontcha know.

Too expensive. Not enough content. Pass.

Do they still use that shitty flash player? Seems to not work as well as Youtube’s, and nowhere near as nice as Netflix’s Silverlight.

    • Visual Mofo

      You mean, Microsoft’s Silverlight?

      • Anonymous

Yes, I was fully aware that Silverlight is a Microsoft product, but Microsoft isn’t playing the movies.

It’s definitely too expensive. They need to lower the price.

Seeing something on Hulu, then logging onto your Playstation 3 to watch (btw, no more Playstation Plus subscription necessary to have access to Hulu Plus) only to have the content NOT available for Plus members is infuriating. Subscribers like me are actually paying money for LESS content. It’s kind of crazy.

In that picture, you look like Jason Statham.

I wasn’t aware that a film called “X-Men 3″ was ever released. I’m familiar with “X-Men: The Last Stand”, but I find this “X-Men 3″ title perplexing.

    Way too expensive. $9.99? Ha!

Unless you are using Google TV. Or does it work?

How does this work on my Apple TV?

I think hulu needs to look at streaming to multiple devices, wii, xbox, etc. Also, if i was to pay $9.99 a month, there better be no ads or commercials whatsoever, if there are, not worth the money. If they can’t do that, then it’s a big FAIL… Or, they could make the price very very low but again, they need to get more content and faster without the dreaded failing to load the video you want msg.

There better not be ads? Think again. There always will be ads on Hulu.

I would like to congratulate anyone, who hasn’t bought into this rip off. Hulu Plus will NOT be ad free. Therefor, I take my money and invest it, into Netflix, which IS ad free.

Besides, Hulu ads + 5-10 commercials = a 1 hour show. NO THANKS!

The only thing I have to say is Neftlix +Hulu Plus on my PS3…Man the PS3 is just getting better as it get old.

  • Josh

they still don’t accept prepaid credit cards… that totally sucks… netflix has no problem with my prepaid credit card… oh well less money for you hulu… I’ll just watched from my CPU for free!!!

  • Gary

When I can get it on my Android some one let me know. Netfix is working on it last time I heard.

  • iamnotracist

Junk! I signed up for Hulu Plus, PSN+ and paid my $$ only to find out many shows can’t be watched. Then I discovered Playon.tv and life has been good. Sounds like a commercial, but worth the extra 10 minutes of setup to pay $40 a year vs $120 a year. Combine that with Netflix and we have ditched cable.

I know Americans like to think that “USA” = everybody in the world, but just as a short reminder:

USA’s “all” is roughly 4.6% of the world’s “all”.

So, Hulu is still only available to subscribers within the USA (perhaps Canada, can’t check).

    • Chetan

This is a USA based blog and they don’t claim to be international.

I like how people judge others based on a select few or just something made up in their heads.

Way too expensive considering it still has ads. Drop it to $5/month and remove the ads — then I’d pay in a second.
