Skyfire for iOS approved with Flash-to-HTML5 video converting in tow

Software

A new report Tuesday morning from CNNMoney.com states that Skyfire’s mobile Web browser for iOS has been approved by Apple. Skyfire 2.0, which the report states will become available in Apple’s App Store on Thursday, is one of several mobile Safari alternatives available for the iPhone. The main distinguishing factor touted by Skyfire, however, is the app’s ability to play Adobe Flash-based video content on iOS devices. The app achieves this by utilizing software on Skyfire’s remote servers to convert Flash video to an iOS-friendly HTML5-based format. The converted video then streams to the device from Skyfire’s servers. The crafty workaround won’t support interactive Flash content such as games, but many iOS users will welcome the ability to stream a much wider range of videos than had previously been available on iOS. The app will be available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and will cost $2.99 when it becomes available. Hit the break for a video demo of Skyfire 2.0 in action.

    I’m liking what I’m seeing…

  • Flash is blocked

    Doesn’t work for most Flash.

looks good to me. Gets around the flash video capabilities. I really don’t care about flash games, app store games are much better anyway,

SkyFire was free on Android (still is I’d imagine) its been in beta forever though. Now with 2.2 supporting flash its not *really* needed. Good to see it getting to iOS though. That’s quite awesome.

$2.99….hmmm must have been a bribe to get apple to approve this. I guess Apple will get $1 per download.

Well worth it for me though.

    half -ass flash.. Yippie..

Sucks that we have to go through this to get standard internet content, and not even all of it. Blah.

Don’t tell me what comes next, Adobe will suddenly have yet another “security update” that will just so happen to break how this feature in Skyfire works and the feature won’t work for some days and the cat and mouse game will go on?

You guys obviously have no idea what their talking about. The only site that has blocked skyfire is hulu and rightfully so (their business model). Adobe cannot block this feature or “break it”. Skyfire works great and wonderfully. Skyfire does not play a game of cat and mouse with anyone. It works just as it should.

One less reason to get a Droid…

I think you mean one more reason to get an android phone.

Skyfire on Android isn’t that great. It is half-assed and piggy-backs off of the stock browser. It will be interesting to see if the paid iphone version is more like the winmo version. It’s free for everybody, but iphone users. Go figure. Greedy Stevie.

Steve Jobs no more sets prices on items in the app store than you do.

    This blows

Awesome. This is good news. Of course the haters still find something to complain about :-)

Hulu blocks Skyfire, and most of the videos that I watched on other sites didn’t work. I don’t want Flash on my phone just for videos. I want to be able to play games and go to the full version of complex websites. Apple just doesn’t seem to understand this. If they prefer HTML5, then why not just have both?

    Looking forward with this app.

Great news to me, I had Skyfire on my old N95 and it sucked big time, but now they have a workaround for the iphone with the converting done outside and it sounds like the way Cloudbrowse does it. I don’t really play any flash based games, more interested in the video portion. Lets see…

    Skyfire is available now.
