New Motorola DROID 2 Global details emerge

mobile

The coming introduction of Verizon Wireless’ DROID 2 Global isn’t exactly shrouded in mystery at this point. It suffices to say we know almost everything there is to know about this incremental upgrade… short of its release date. Now, thanks to a leaked comparison sheet slapped together by Motorola, we have an apparent confirmation of most of the key details. First and foremost, the DROID 2 Global will include the rumored 1.2GHz processor upgrade we’ve been waiting for. It will also come in two colors — “Dark Sapphire” and “Winter White” — and it will feature a 3.7-inch, 854 x 480-pixel touchscreen display. Other highlights include:

• Remote wipe of device and SD card
• Document editing with QuickOffice
• Inbox filtering
• Invite attendees to meetings using GAL
• Free/busy lookups for meeting participants
• 5-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash
• Dual-band CDMA and quad-band GSM
• Physical keyboard and virtual Swype keyboard
• 8GB internal memory plus 8GB pre-installed SD card
• Android 2.2
• 3 UI profiles
• 3G mobile hotspot capability
• Flash 10.1

Awesome!… now someone get me a comparison of the HTC Merge and the HTC Incredible HD =) Cause the release date rumors of 11th and 23rd respectively haven’t been enough to keep my fed the past week or two.

Not saying this new Droid doesn’t look cool… it does. But I’m into rooting etc… and am thinking an HTC would be the way to go at this point…

hopefully november 11th for the Merge. I cant wait!

I was all with you… but now I’m thinking I might have to wait for incredible HD. Can’t make up my mind about whether I want a keyboard or not.

Originally I would have said no… then I found out about all the incredible emulators for “old school” video games… which you’d want a keyboard for. Not to mention how badass this (http://www.home.game-gripper.com/) could be for the merge… assuming they make one (I bet they will)

I just hope the Incredible HD isn’t the Desire HD with minor tweaks (which it might be)… as there are some design flaws in the Desire HD.

Time will tell… I got a custom google search just waiting for the new fact nuggets to hit to nets…

DROID (finally) does global. Good to hear about a dualmode CDMA Android phone after all this time.

    Your move, Sprint.

Finally! Wish I could swap out my Droid (1) for one of these right now. It sucked traveling around Europe with my two iPhone toting friends as they merrily texted, checked in on Foursquare, etc. while I was stuck with my useless brick.

Am I seeing things or does the spec for the incredible say swype keyboard?

I’m curious to see what kind of Quadrant scores this thing can produce. But moreso, I’m interested to know more about it’s GPU. CPU speed became somewhat of a moot point beyond a theoretical standpoint when the new JIT compiler hit Android in FroYo 2.2.

A nearly fivefold increase in processing efficiency is allowing even the most pitiful processors to perform fairly well. I have my theories as to why this is being an excuse to releasing sub-standard ARM11 CPUs like those in the Viewpad 7 and the Samsung Transform but that’s another topic.

So GPU performance is quickly becoming Android’s weak point. Phones like the Galaxy S line and the 2nd and 3rd generation Snapdragons seem to make progress in this field, but will TI finally move beyond using the same ‘ol PowerVR SGX 535 besides bumping the clock speed yet again?

Here’s a site with all the Quadrant scores you will ever want to know. :)

      http://smartphonebenchmarks.com

It has the scores for the Global and hundreds of other Android devices.

By the way, this thing still contains the same GPU as Droid X. I don’t expect any improvements in that area.

Thanks for the link. I think I’ve been there before but I’d never bookmarked it. I tend to pull my benchmarks from glbenchmark.com, but that website is definitely a better resource.

As for the GPU, I figured that. More than likely the Droid 2 Global runs the OMAP3640 to the Droid X’s 3630. Both have the PowerVR SGX530. It’s possible the GPU got a small speed bump as well but who knows.

Will this be avaliable on tmobile 3g or att 3g or what?

    • defTwitch

No… it will most likely only work on Verizon’s network in the states…

      • ebong

is that b/c VZW will lock it? i’m sure theres some way, since the frequencies are for t-mob (900/1700/2100)

wtf my incredible can’t get swype

    • Eric C

I’m hoping that was a typo because I will be very upset if it starts shipping with swype now that my 30 days are up.

Once these smartphones reach 2Ghz and beyond are the batteries going to be replaced by micro nuclear reactors with a 2 year charge. I’m running my dinc and my wife the d2 with advance task killer and we still can’t get past 1pm without having to recharge.

    • Anonymous

You make a great point. Batteries is going to be the big deal in the near future. Smartphone by next generation are fast enough for most everything appropriate for that small screen. All the smartphones and even multimedia phones are doing basically the same things, so the next killer capability will be battery life.

  • defTwitch

You know I didn’t notice that at first. It is Quad band so AT&T / T-Mobile might have a chance. Even if it is “locked” somehow… I’m sure there will be a way if its technically feasible.
