Sprint CEO Dan Hesse: Thank you iPad

mobile

Sprint may not stock the iPhone or the iPad, but that hasn’t stopped them from reaping the benefits (or even making a case) of the iPad’s success. In an interview with GigaOm, Dan Hesse,CEO of Sprint pointed out that the fastest selling iPad’s were the WiFi variants, which bodes well for Sprint. Sprint’s Overdrive 3G/4G mobile wireless hotspot, has been selling well, allowing iPad owners to blitz the net at 4G speeds. “The company has seen an uptick in demand for its Overdrive (3G/4G) MiFi wireless hotspot device, as people use it to connect their iPads to the Internet when on the go.” Although Dan stopped short of giving us some actual numbers, we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Sprint has been rolling out their 4G network gradually across the major cities in the U.S., and from the looks of it, their Overdrive sales aren’t going to pipe down any time soon.

Still the English language. I, along with 6 other +1s, applaud surly. People don’t point this out often enough. The two words mean completely different things.

If you want to talk about seriousness on the internet, maybe you should address OP’s comment. While Sprint currently isn’t turning a stable or consistent profit, they are clearly trying.

The thing is MacMan, this isn’t event a grammatical error. You flat out used the wrong word. ‘Your’ and You’re’ are two COMPLETELY different words. One is a contraction of ‘you are’, whilst the other indicates ownership of something. If you were using punctuation incorrectly, I would call everyone a-holes for being a grammar snob. But in this case your sentence doesn’t even make sense, making you look like a moron.

If they were saying “thank you” to some Apple competitor?

“Dan stopped short of giving us some actual numbers, so we are naturally suspicious on the true extent of (insert Apple’s competitor’s device here) influence on real sales numbers.”

Apple has sold just over 4 million ipad worldwide…. It made zero noticeable difference to Sprints bottom line… only people that think it has is Apple’s PR department getting this crap on record trying to promote the product.

    • TheNewReign

They had sold 7.37 million iPads in the products first six months. If you don’t like the products(s) that is your choice but at least have the facts when presenting yourself because you choosing not to know makes for a bad read for the rest of us.

      • The Minus Rescinder Jerry Dorfman

Here in Hawaii, Sprint reception is great. Heck we even have 4G. Their customer service is great, then again, I just stop by the store and most local people are nice…

    • slammer

Too bad. Because with the money you save with Sprint, it is almost like they are paying half your bill.

The iPad sold over 7.4 million since in launched in april. It sold over 4 million last quarter.

Hesse is such an ignorant prick. Sprint blows and is sinking further into oblivion. Won’t be long before vzw buys them. Or deutche telekom, either way. Spontaneous won’t last another year.

    • slammer

Ignorance has a way of finding a mate, and your post seems to have validated this belief.

Hesse has gone on record as saying that he expected the company to suffer losses. His main concern was to elevate a high level of regiment to ensure the highest measure of customer service. Money needed to be spent.

Since this announcement, the network has improved ten fold and that level of customer service he envisioned to improve, as indeed gone from bottom to #2.

There is still more work to be accomplished, but as I have found out over the 23 years I’ve been a subscriber to carriers, I would much rather be with a carrier that needs my business. It strengthens the union between consumer and company. Sprint has proved within the last three years that their improvements are viable and strong.

Since I am not tied to any carrier as an employee, I feel confident that expressing my experience with Sprint is mirrored by many other of their subscribers.

  • http://www.buymobile.net BuyMobile.net

Sprint has a tough battle ahead of them if they plan on staying relevant alongside T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. They have some quality products but I just can’t see them keeping up with the worldwide trends.

  • Dan Hesse was in your head

Sprint has been losing money since 2004. Love how people come on here and say they are going out of business as a result of this latest quarter. Do you really think they would invest in a 4g network if they knew they were going down?

The truth in all this is Sprint is on a serious rebound. Gaining customers, hammering good customer service down their employees throats, and carrying a more solid phone line up than any other carrier, with some heavy hitters (EVO,EPIC) included.

A large portion of employee compensation comes from providing good customer service. If the customers aren’t happy, they aren’t rating employees well, and employees see a significant chunk out of their paycheck.

No other carrier has a structure like this with their employees. In other words, No other carrier holds their employees accountable for anything outside of making sure you the customer spends money.

But anyhow, I think Sprint scares a lot of people. They have roaming agreements in so many places… In principle, their network is just as large as the other guys. Not to mention Sprint owns something like 70% of the broadband spectrum. So your data speeds will never be throttled and data plans won’t be “tiered” like they are at other carriers.

So while these blogs with agendas post their agenda filled blogs. Sprint is making all the right moves… and I expect them to be the number 2 carrier within the next 7-8 years if Hesse continues to implement his strategy.

P.S. To the Verizon fanbroys who are taking potshots at Sprints fiances. Do some research on your Nazi carriers debts… lol Their pursuit to become the largest network in the states has left them in dire straits. Purchasing Alltel (buying customers) has come back to haunt them in a very serious way.

nobody has the attention span to read that. and the ipad is part to blame.

You speak the truth, I have a friend who works in a call center in TN, and when she tells me about their process of taking money out of their check if they dont have a high approval rating. On the downside it makes the employee lie for a good review, like taking off charges and what not.

      • Dan Hesse was in your head

I wouldn’t say it makes the employee lie. Every credit handed out is analyzed by someone somewhere within the company. People will take a reduction in pay for lying customers not getting their way before compromising integrity to get good scores.

On the other hand, everything works out in the end. The majority of people who call in have honest legitimate issues, especially when it comes to billing. They deserve a credit, and they will get one. No harm no foul.

  • Dan Hesse was in your head

The thing with Sprint is they are the most genuine carrier out there. A large portion of employee compensation is in the customers hands. Sprint involves their customers in other words. Their goal is to break the barrier somewhat between themselves and the customer. Bottom line, they want the customer to be a part of it to, not just their employees.
