Wi-Fi only Samsung Galaxy Tab crosses FCC’s desk

General

It looks like the Wi-Fi only variant of the Samsung Galaxy Tab — a device Samsung said they were working on that recently made an appearance in a Best Buy advert — has crossed the FCC’s desk. The only difference between the carrier branded Tab and the Wi-Fi only Tab, other than the absence of a cellular radio (duh!), is the device’s model number: GT-P1010. If Best Buy’s advertisement-oopsie was accurate, we should see the Wi-Fi device priced around $499; $100 less than an unsubsidized 3G model. What do you think? Worth it?

So you would use this thing as a camera? Seriously, you would hold this up just like a camera or a camera phone?

I thought it was going to be a contract only device for a second, but I knew that the tab wouldn’t stand a chance in competition against the iPad since Apple offers wifi and contract.

    • Max Sandoval

The 3G iPad doesn’t have a contract.. that’s why its $130 more than the regular model.

I think you guys should be asking if paying $100 more to be tied in a 2 year contact is worth it

    • Menno

Considering the 3g versions don’t require a contract, why would we be asking that?

i almost got locked into a 2 year ipad contract where i would pay this guy rocco 100 dollars per month and he would have it all set up for me. then i realized it was a scam. there was no contract. he was going to lock me in for 2 years to his own contract and charge me a 70 dollar service fee. needless to say i don’t have dealings with rocco.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is the right size for this class of consumer products. It is a superior product compared to the iPad because of its cameras, more portable size, flash support, and the ability to add storage via an SD card. I will most likely buy the Wi-Fi only one if it comes out soon.

I see two issues that need to get addressed:
1 – Get a Wi-Fi only version announced and released ASAP!
2 – Have another option not available in the US – a version with FULL phone capability (both voice and data). With Bluetooth and other headset and even speaker phone, this would be the BEST option since it can actually replace something.

compared to everything that’s out there and pricing them even without the cellular radio I have to admit it’s kind of a steal $$$ but I won’t buy it I’ll wait for the Ipad 2

Ate developers even making higher res apps yet?

    • Menno

I’ve seen a couple apps in the marketplace advertising “tablet ready”

But most apps should scale well as long as they were properly coded.

      • Michael S

        – “But most apps should scale well as long as they were properly coded.”

        Scale? Yes.

Have a tablet-optimized layout? Not without a complete re-coding of the app.

Look at how iPhone and iPad apps look when they are properly made for each device:

As long as it isn’t Bing-a-fied like the 3G model, it will have a chance.

    Galaxy Pad:

    Fits in one hand
Weighs half as much as iPad
    Newer processor chipset
    More RAM
Removable Storage (Swap cards to load movies, docs, music etc… not leashed to iTunes)
    Front Camera
    Rear Camera
Native Support for More Video Codecs (divx/xvid anyone?)
Android Froyo (Widgets, ROMS, Google Calender/Outlook Integration)
Google Voice (who needs a carrier for phone calls!)
Flash Support (HTML 5 is not as prevalent as Jobs would have us believe)
True Multi-tasking (not apple pseudo version to save battery life. I will run it into the ground if I want!)

Hell yeah, I’m gonna get one when WiFi only comes out!
