Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro get Android 2.1 on Sunday

Software

As Google prepares to release a fresh new version of Android, Sony Ericsson has announced that it will finally push out an OS update for three of its smartphones… to Android 2.1. No, the Xperia X10 family won’t be gobbling down Gingerbread any time soon, or even feasting on FroYo. Instead, the Xperia X10, Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro will all be stuck eating Eclair beginning Sunday, October 31st. Oh and if you have an AT&T-branded X10, you’ll have to wait until some time in November for the update. Sony Ericsson has delayed this Android 2.1 upgrade several times and now that it’s almost here, it seems like way too little, way too late. As for when the X10 crew might see a more modern build of the Android OS, don’t hold your breath. Hit the jump for a rundown of changes X10 users can expect starting this weekend.

Xperia X10:

  • HD video recording with continuous auto-focus for high quality videos
  • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
  • New back up and restore application, with extended content back up
  • 5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders
  • Social phonebook which automatically syncs contact pictures from Facebook and shows when your friends are online

Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro:

  • Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more
  • New backup and restore application with extended content back up
  • Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book
  • Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in your messages
  • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android platform 2.1

that’s the nicest looking keyboard phone i have seen.

You’ve got to be kidding me. Even the LG keyboards are better than these! I mean, it’s not ugly – but certainly not anywhere near the top.

    LOL at the fragmentation.

Wouldn’t it be easier and make more sense to just create your UI as a stand alone app? It’s ridiculous to just now be coming with 2.1. They could even charge for the app for non product devices. People may love a UI, but not the phone. Then for say $1-$3 you could sell it to that person. That kills fragmentation and at the same time makes them more money. They’re going to charge the same amount of money for the phone regardless of the UI.

      Engineers always over complicate things.

And to add to that, it kills me that the dumb ass companies think that we are buying these devices for the UI. So they make it look pretty and add a couple of nice features. But when you go to the app market you can’t use half the apps because they are not compatible with your OS version.

I have a small business, and the biggest things that wastes our time as money is trying to add more than is being asked for. I understand the competition is rough, and you want to make yourself stand out. But updates in a timely manner go farther than a couple of neat features that you can probably find in the market anyway.

I’m absolutely shocked at this. It’s like someone announcing that T-Mobile just got the iPhone 2G. Um…sweet?

Too bad too…those phones look nice, as does the UI

Sony has completely BOTCHED their entire mobile business. 3-5 years ago, they were leaders with innovative handsets; Sony now settles for high concept/low execution. Unlike Motorola or Samsung, their android skin isn’t clunky and does not feel forced. It’s nowhere near HTC Sense, but it works well. For a company with their resources, they should be leading,.

One has to wonder how much longer they keep throwing money at quality hardware, only to piss it away on the software. Just leave the damn thing stock if skinning it becomes such an issue that you’re nearly two OS revisions behind.

Wow 2.1, way to stay current Sony!

  • MacMan

Sony sucks. 2.1 ? Is that the best you can do ?

  • Mr.Bill

It’s not just Sony, My wifes HTC Desire is still on 2.1 sadly.
Our carrier states the update to 2.2 will be out in Oct 2010.
And it is not there as of this morning.

    Halloween apples.

It’s one thing to still be on 2.1 but it’s a whole other thing to just now be upgrading to 2.1. You know the Xperia won’t see 2.2 til about this time next year.

      • Mr.Bill

        Good point Kris.

It makes me sad when Sony fails at so many products. At one point, anything they would release would be an auto purchase, but not anymore.

I think its sad that they need to look at Moto and Sammy for how to properly develop and market devices.

    • http://cabinics.com David

All handset makers using android have a crapload of devices still waiting for updates. Moto was like that until they came out with the droid, and Sam was like that until they came out with the Galaxy line. F*ck a UI give me an update.

I’m so glad I passed on the X10. I feel sorry for those who bought it…

The thing is, is that the X10 is actually a really slick phone. Around when it was first being leaked I for sure thought it was gonna be a clunky POS because of the heavy skinning. About a month ago though I walked into a Sony store and messed around with it for a while. And let me tell you, the thing flew, and it was only running, what, 1.6? I have never seen a device running 1.6 with such smooth scrolling, animations and appdrawer swiping. My point is that perhaps 2.1 will work pretty well for this phone considering it was running really well already on 1.6. Sony seems to have figured how to utilize the OS to its fullest. I suppose the biggest issue with not having Froyo is lack of Flash. Other than that, this update should make an already solid phone even more solid.

I’d say that the OEM skins can be great (as with HTC Sense), but seeing as it’s virtually the only thing that can hinder upgrading except hardware limitations, “can” isn’t enough. If SEs skin would be on par with Sense, I’d say, fine, I waited six months for the update (and will still be behind), but at least I waited six months for it.

The differences between 1.6 and 2.1 as far as the SE skin goes is subtle, if any. Their apps will be updated later (Timescape etc) so this is virtually just a port of their current skin to 2.1 – which has taken over six months. And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is MY grudge in this.

We are far behind, and we wait to get ahead, but we wait so long that when we actually go forward (2.1), it’s not a leap ahead, it’s just back to square one; trying to stay relevant. And at the end of the day, at best, it’ll be a major bugfix. Not a leap, rather, barely moving.
