Verizon makes $15 data plan official, testing unlimited mobile-to-mobile in some markets

General

There have been rumors floating around the internet about Verizon Wireless offering a second, “tiered” data plan, and that rumor was confirmed today. America’s largest wireless provider will begin offering a $15 monthly data plan to 3G smartphone users that offers 150MB data allowance. The carrier will bill overages at $15 per 150MB and the $30, unlimited data plan will remain unchanged.

Also hot off the rumor wagon, Engadget is reporting that Verizon is testing calling plans with unlimited, any-mobile-to-mobile minutes — a la Sprint — in select markets across Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas. The plans range from $60 all the way up to $130 — offering between 450 and 2000 minutes — and include unlimited text messaging. The unlimited mobile-to-mobile offerings are available until the end of 2010 at which point, we assume, Verizon will either expand or cancel the plans depending on demand.

I really hope Verizon expands this offering to all markets. With Sprint posting some positive net adds and AT&T kicking their ass in net adds, it just gives Big Red more reason to do so

I’m not sure why they have to “test” a minute plan. I do know its likely because they are losing subscribers to all the carriers because their sh!t is way overpriced. Also if you are on VZW get the unlimited data while you can. It will be dropped to one or two GBs real soon. We all know VZW does what At&t does eventually. Just takes several months or years (iphone).

Being that the big evil death star did it first, we know that big evil red will follow. I figure the bastards will will have just 1 gig for $30. Remember when they said, “we don’t agree with how AT&T has valued data.” I had a feeling they meant, “they’re not charging enough…”

I would never ever ever support VZ. They are the original evil. They created the higher ETF, created the data cap, were the first to cripple features on phones for their own benefit/profit, and were the first to mandate bloatware. They are rotten evil to the core, as is now AT&T.

      • Just Me

Actually both you morons are wrong. First off, VZW lowered its prices to where they are now, and within 2 hours, AT&T followed suit….read the newspapers.

Secondly, if you again read, VZW’s smartphone plans is unlimited for $30, rather than what you suggest.

As for losing subscribers to the other carriers, VZW has the lowest churn rate ever and the lowest in the industry….1.07% compared to 1.4 for AT&T and almost 2% for Sprint.

Clearly you both are anti-VZW but only you must believe what you’re spewing.

I hate to bust up a good argument in a debate. While most of your points are accurate, you come up a little short in trying to defend VZW’s pricing. It is nice to see them relaxing their prices to a certain extent, but they still are the most expensive carrier to obtain service from. And they still are very much an a la carte carrier. This is nothing to be proud of in an industry where consumers as myself and smaller carriers are trying to offer all inclusive offers.

You are ignorant. Verizon is always on the offensive and AT&T follows suite. The iPhone debacle is an exclusivity agreement between AT&T and Apple. Do your homework.

  • techjunkieforlife

$10 per 150mb, Really? Oh dear

    • techjunkieforlife

Opps $15 even, edit button please BGR

  • joe cool

they could have done something awesome like 15 for 500 mb and beat att sraight up

    • Just Me

Actually, if you check, AT&T no longer offers unlimited, whereas VZW still offers unlimited for $29.99.

  • MacMan

150mb ? What is that like 10 postings on BGR ? That wont work for me.

    • ChocoFajita

Its specically designed for those who like to piss 15 dollars away a month.

    • GoogleGuy

Obviously that’s not for power users. I have my droid on a prepaid plan with only 50mb (not a typo) a month, and I come to this site regularly, I still can’t pass that limit.

  • Swissfreek

Heard an ad for the unlimited mobile-to-mobile on the radio here in Oklahoma yesterday, so I’d say it’s more than a rumor.

  • Felix

It would be nice if all carriers offered unlimited mobile-to-mobile. At a reasonable price of course.

  • PandaBarr

    This became available yesterday.

  • Wow

BG is behind on reporting news again. The mobile to any mobile offer has been going on since August. VZW has been testing it in their CTX markets since then and just expanded it to additional markets. Also, the $15 data plan just launched yesterday along with several other offerings including a $50 5gb plan and $80 10gb plan for the MIFI.

Where have you been on reporting this BG?

    • Andrew Munchbach

You mean like this post from August 3rd?

      http://www.bgr.com/2010/08/03/verizon-offering-unlimited-any-mobile-plans-in-certain-markets/

It was only in Texas and Louisiana then… this is far more expansive.

      • rl

He still got you on the Data Plan tho…. Old news

      • Wow

In the immortal words of White Goodman….”Touche”

However, the language used “hot off the rumor mill” makes it sound like this is a new offering instead of being an expansion of the plan launched in August. It seems like you should have pointed that out instead of making it seem like a new plan.

You are also saying that VZW will begin to offer the data package instead of stating that it already launched. You also missed reporting the expanded offerings of data on the MIFI, netbooks, and tablets.

    • (Not)Wow…

      *****crickets*****

  • Lone Ninja

Maybe I shouldn’t complain when T-Mobile launches its $10/200MB plan then. At least it will give me more data for a lower price.

  • Wow is dunb

    Go suck a 8======D

    • Wow

Take out the equal signs for a better representation of your teeny weeny. Also, you misspelled dumb. Douche!!

  • Steel

    Sucks. I was hoping for a 1gb $20 option. Oh well…

  • Frank

Am I missing something? Doesn’t Verizon offer unlimited mobile-to-mobile on their plans right now. Or are they referring to moblie to mobile between carriers?

    • serpentor

      yes

    • Just Me

Currently unlimited mobile to vzw mobile. The promo being offered in those select areas is unlimited mobile to ANY mobile.

  • serpentor

$15 for 150MB. Why would they want to make AT&T look like a better value?

    • Joe B.

Unlike AT&T Verizon is still offering an Unlimeted Data plan. I’d still have to say the value goes to Verizon which doesn’t force tiered data as it’s only options.

  • BoyRetard

You’re all missing the point. $15 for$ 150 mb is designed for the light users but the bigger picture here is that VERIZON DIDN’T LOSE THEIR UNLIMITED PLAN!! Everyone swore they would, ala AT&T, but they kept it. There’s no 2gb for $25 crap, it’d purely unlimited! Can AT&T say that?

    • serpentor

      Well, at least not yet.

Verizon has shown in the past that they are all to happy to follow AT&T’s footsteps when it comes to pricing and terms.

Let’s see if there’s still an unlimited plan when iPhone hits.

      • Joe B.

I love how people will lash out at Verizon for what they “might” do despite no evidence pointing to said conclusion. AT&T is a joke by removing their unlimeted data option and adding a $200 dollar fee for using your early upgrade. Let’s point our finger at pathetic policies carriers are actually doing and not the theoretical ones you think they might do.

  • snork

This plan is good for blackberry users.. but not android users. It’s not great, but better than requiring a $30/month plan for everyone… and they didn’t screw over heavy users like att did by getting rid of the unlimited plan (yet)

    • Fresh330

I agree. It’s better than requiring $29.99/month for unlimited. For example, neither my father and younger sister go over 150MB/month but I still have to dish out $29.99 for each phone line. Myself on the other hand needs an unlimited plan.

  • ras

I have mobile-to-mobile on Sprint and it saves me a PANTLOAD every month. I used to go over my minutes, but I was right on the cusp of it being cost effective to jump to the next tier of minutes. Now I’ve got the minimum monthly minutes and never use them all.

  • Kevin P

This hasn’t shown up on My Verizon yet, hmm, I was going to try it. I use between 140MB and 200MB a month. I surf a lot more, but use WiFi wherever I can. So on the months I stay below 150, I’ll only have to pay $15. I really don’t want to call VZW and sit on hold though…

  • haz

I don’t like tiered plans, but I can at least understand why carriers are instituting them… but these rates are ridiculous. Fine, $15/mo for tiered data, but getting only 150 MBs is a god damn joke.

Looking at my current usage, I have blown through about 80 MBs in just 3 days, and I don’t even consider myself that much of a heavy-user. The $15/mo plan should be 300-400 MBs minimum… any less than that is an insult to your customers.

  • Texan

I’ve been unable to confirm this for myself in OKC by both calling and web.

Rep said maybe next month, but I’ll keep trying.

  • tim

This does not show as available to me on either bb or Smartphone
