Rogers reinstates 24-month hardware upgrade program

General

Following up on a story we broke last week: it looks like Rogers Wireless has reverted back to a 24-month term for their customer hardware upgrade program. The program — which previously allowed customers to upgrade handsets, with full subsidies, after fulfilling 24-months of a 36-month contract — was adjusted last week, requiring customers to fulfill a 30-month term before getting the discounted pricing. Now, according to a second company communication, it looks like Rogers will be reinstating the 24-month hardware upgrade term. A memo to employees reads:

Last week, we communicated some changes about our Hardware Upgrade Policy (HUP) eligibility. To ensure our current promotions are clear and consistent, Data to Data HUP eligibility will be revised to 24-months as of October 28. This current promotion aligns Voice to Voice, Voice to Data and Data to Data eligibility all to 24-months.

Important Note about Hardware Upgrades
:
To remain competitive and increase customer loyalty, we regularly offer customers promotional options to upgrade their hardware before the expiry of their current commitments. However, it is important to remember that our HUP program is a promotion and not a plan feature. These promotions are subject to change and as a result, should not be promised to customers at the point of sale.

Back to business as usual in Canada. Anyone feeling relieved?

Thanks, solidsnake3467!

No, I’m a robot from the future who’s come to 2010 to fix your grammar. You’re…not your.

It’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood.

So now rogers is new every two instead of new every three (which doesn’t rhyme and is a terrible marketing strategy)/

Just having this not be hard coded into your 3 year agreement is wrong, loyalty should have rewards and not just when they are flooded with EOL handsets. If other carriers can do it why not these penny pinching SOB’s.

I like the old tier system when I could get a HUP at 12 months.

This is just a play to make people feel okay with the 24 month HUP period. we really should get back the 12 month HUP period… 24 months is still too long. Especially if Rogers keeps up the retarded iphone exceptions

It’s not necessary to use a photo of the Jesuit humanitarian Fred Rogers, whose character is unimpeachable, when talking about a company scandal.

Let’s show some respect for a truly great man.

Are we supposed to feel like we’ve been given something?

This reminds me of retailers who quickly mark up the prices on products so they can turn around and offer you a “sale” next week by reducung prices back to where they were.

Makes me feel real warm and fuzzy.

With 6 months left I am less likely to re-up for another 3 years for a shiny new handset – with 12 though I probably will. They should have known this but probably quickly found out when the first 100 people that found out about this told them to GF’d..

I don’t like the sound of this memo. My interpretation is “You may win this round, but I will be back”

Go ahead and threat me, I have my $600 ready to buy out my contract.

May I add, Rogers made this HUP program sounded like charity.

Two months ago Rogers offered me an option to upgrade my existing 3Gs to an iphone 4 for $299. BUT….. they didn’t have any phones in stock….sorry.

last week I called and, yes they have phones in stock BUT the offer is no longer valid because Now I’m not eligible.

    WTF?

I am a long term (more than 20 years) “VIP” customer of Rogers
    - Home phone
    - Cable
    - High speed internet and
    - two cell phones

and despite the crazy amount of cash I shovel their way EVERY month and the fact I have been a customer for more than 20 years – I’m not eligible for an upgrade??? SERIOUSLY???

If you are contemplating becoming a Rogers customer do the following exercises:

Bend over and grab your ankles. repeat until it becomes normal it will make it easier for Rogers to give it to you on a regular basis.

Rogers the most evil and worst company in the world!!!

Enron, most of wall street, BP and Nike all say ‘yo, wud up?’

You can still get Early Upgrades based on revenue. And people will still find ways to get phones through Customer Relations

    Fuck You Rogers.

Even better is the other carrier owned by Rogers, Fido. Fido used to be an independant ’boutique’ brand, but now they are used as a somewhat down market version of Rogers. Prices are about the same, but you same a little with things like reward dollars and per second billing.

Fido had a HUP policy of being eligible when you had 14 months remaining on your 3 year contract. They also changed theirs to the same 6 month window that Rogers did, but they have not gone back to the original windows as Rogers has. Fido also STACKS contracts. This means, that anyone that upgraded recently for the iPhone 4, for example, that had 14 months remaining, now has a contract for 50 months (14 + 36 for new 3 year renewal). Yes, that is right a 50 month contract. And with the new policy of needing to be in your last 6 months to HUP, these customer will now have to wait 44 months to be able to HUP with subsidy. That is almost 4 years before they will be eligible.

    Nice. WHAT THE FUCK ROGERS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!
