T-Mobile myTouch hands on

Featured

We’re at T-Mobile’s intimate myTouch event right now (we’re currently snuggling up with all four colors — white, black, red and purple), and here are our first-hand impressions:

  • It feels good in the hand. The device is pretty slim, has a slight Android chin at the bottom, and all in all seems to be very solidly-built.
  • The screen is beautiful, sharp and bright — but not as good as an AMOLED in our opinion.
  • It rocks the myTouch UI that first appeared with the myTouch Slide, though it seems a bit more refined now.
  • We’re currently watching Vincent from SlashGear and Sascha from PC Magazine try to establish a video call. It was unsuccessful at first, but it seems like they’re having way too much fun now that it’s working. Never mind, Sascha is yelling at the phone now.
  • Watching a demo of the phone streaming video to a TV set was pretty cool. After some quick initial buffering, movies, photos and YouTube played effortlessly on the HDTV.

We’re pretty excited for the launch of the new myTouch. It’s packed with features and it nicely compliments T-Mobile’s stock Android G2 device as a younger-focused counterpart. Hit the jump for our full gallery, ok?

To those of you that extoll the virtues of your phone and/or carrier: please watch more TV, and yes, reading causes cancer.
Lost in the mindless “my phone/carrier is better than yours” drivel is the painful fact that your beloved carrier would shamelessly stick it to you for 3-5 times your current rate were it not for the presence of the competition you so vehemently bash. At present, we in the US have four major carriers, which as far as I’m concerned is the minimum for a healthy consumer ecosystem. God forbid we someday have only two: see American political system. Corporation A desperately seeks to distance itself from B in marketing campaigns, yet the lack of a viable third option effectively resigns A and B to suck up to the fat part of the market (the masses in the middle), making their professed differences pure rhetoric. The end result would be the same. The real loser is the consumer, the sorry bastard paying the bills.
Sorry for the rant, but you idiots need to realize there’s a whole world outside of your preferences and need to feel intelligent for the purchase you’ve made. Let’s face it, a few months later, your cutting edge device just became an “also-ran”.
Everyone, regardless of their motivations, has valid reasons for the device they purchase and whom they choose to support it (provider). Because those reasons may not coincide with yours makes them no less valid. Should you feel threatened by opinions that don’t mirror yours, I suggest using a search engine to find a good therapist. Or grow up and recognize you just may be the victim of a multi-billion dollar marketing campaign.

Why is it so difficult to say something nice or critical without being a prick about it? Network performance evaluation has so many different variables to consider that it almost becomes comedy to compare them to one another. Bottom line is, this phone will be a nice addition to T-Mobiles lineup and will make a whole lot of My Touch 3g owners happy. Will I ditch my Evo for it, no. But I give credit where credit is due. Try it sometimes people, I promise you will live afterwards.
