I’m so delighted they went with android. Die ipad and apple, die.

      lame

While true that its half the price of an iPad, its only $25 or $50 cheaper than the Archos 70 and Archos 101 tablets.

You can easily install several ebook reader stores on the Archos. Without e-ink, the color Nook is a pointless device.

If i’m going to get a device with an LCD, it wouldn’t be this.

      • serpentor

I just checked out the Archos 70 specs. Looks good for the price, plus runs stock anrdroid with 2.2 installed.

I don’t see why anyone would get the Galaxy Tab WIFI over this, especially with a $400 price difference.

      • hubba hubba

Don’t think it includes the App Market though. You have to use Archos’ AppLib right?

      • serpentor

True, but I don’t think the access to the App market is worth $400 if Archos has the AppLib.

Hopefully it will hookup to Amazon’s app market.

      • ss2od

        Galaxy Tab WiFi is $499 though. It’s not a $400 difference. Archos 70 is $270, I think.

      • Tdot34

Agreed, a non e-ink, color e-reader is pointless. If I wanted to read off an LCD screen, I’d just get a tablet that could do other things as well.

  • tlo07

It looks nice, but I’m not sure I would plunk down $250 for it. I’ll guess I’ll stick with my original Nook.

    • Carl

The sucky part is it’s the same price as my original Nook. But I think I’ll also stick with my eInk display, it’s only good for one thing but it rocks at the one thing.

  • Jarrett

This isn’t an Apple post, but Jarrett is gay!

  • Anon

Isn’t an e-ink display the point of an eBook Reader? Being able to stare at the screen for hours without fatigue is the only good reason the Nook and Kindle are worth owning.

    Isn’t this just another tablet?

    • Elrabin

A tablet without full access to the Android App Market and crippled by “Nook Apps” Yep.

    • another day…

@ Anon says: Isn’t this just another tablet?

Yup. Although it’s just a poor attempt, the enormous outside pressure forced B&N to do something.

    • len

The problem with the iPad is not eye fatigue, it is arm fatigue. Damn thing weights a ton and is slippery as a fish. I read on my Nook for no other reason than it is actually book-sized and can be held one-handed like a paperback. Despite already owning an iPad, a Nook, and three Android phones, I just pre-ordered the color Nook for its dimensions.

      • ChocoBurrito

Aw, I’m sorry your vagina get’s strained so easily.

      • len

Why would the free hand be the one strained? That doesn’t make any sense.

      • serpentor

Jarrett, you out there??? Do you see len’s comment???

I think apologies are in order.

    • Anook

      A Nook is an e-book.

      • What?

        Not anymore

  • serpentor

If I can root and boot – I’m in.

  • Jarmer

so what exactly is “ISP Display Tech” … ??? If this isn’t some kind of hybrid system like the Notion Ink Adam has then I can’t understand why it exists.

  • ron

‘NOOKcolor’. Sounds like George W. pronouncing ‘nuclear’.

  • Sandy S. Schwartz.

I consider myself to be very smart since I’m a NYC contract lawyer.

These are the pros of this device:

    1) color
    2) excellent weight and battery
    3) denser pixelation

    cons:

    less reach than iPad

    • JM

Was it really necessary to point out how “smart” you think you are? Not questioning your intelligence or your thought process, just your elevated sense of self

      • Sandy S. Schwartz.

What do you Do JM … sell waffles at a waffle house?

      • Max

Sandy, not only do you consider yourself to be smart, but rather, “very smart”. Do you also consider yourself to have low self esteem? Perhaps only someone with low self-esteem would have the need to point out their profession and draw a conclusion about their intelligence from it. Sandy, in saying what you said, you in a nutshell said, “I’m better than many of the other people who are making comments here, so thus my comment is the only one that has value because of your profession and inflated opinion of yourself.” That is so politically incorrect.

    • MacMan

I’m glad you think your smart.

    • jaymax

-1 for equating “NYC contract lawyer” with smart.

    • serpentor

      Yall got trolled. lulz

    • Sandy_IS_A_FAKE

Sandy is a big fake or she/he can’t even use their real name.

      Check it for your self.

iPad ftw ! Companys need to bring serious competion instead of this B.S.

  • Fronzix’ Dad

My bear Fronzix said, “finally a nook that deserves to be my main book.”

  • Fernando

Sigh, i was excited for this device until they said LCD. Sorry, if I wanted something with all the bells and whistles I would get an iPad, an ereader without eink just won’t do. Why would I get this instead of a kindle or Sony touch reader?

  • Barry Matty Lohan

I’ve ALWAYS wanted a Nook. This Nook seems to be superb.

    • What?

If you always wanted a Nook, this is not the Nook you’re looking for.

  • Nook User

I own a nook and this device is perfect for me. The only thing I would buy a tablet for would be to do casual browsing on the web and have my daughter go through children’s books.

Also, the nook is not positioning itself to compete against the iPad. Categorically, they are 2 different devices.

  • Allan

I have a Pandigital Novel White, which works great (surprised me) and it was list $179 (minus 30% and 20$ Kohls cash) , so far email works, BN store, web. And the guys at SlateDroid are working on putting Frodo on it.

  • Allan

oops that was Froyo , Android 2.2

  • WalterSobchak

    Processor speed?

  • http://walledcity.com/supermighty Supermighty

An android tablet that can only run one app? What were they thinking.

My guess is this will make a great piece of hardware for the hackers to install custom ROMs on.

And with that price maybe I’ll get one.

    • Dale

      Supermighty,

Why does everything have to be loaded with apps that do nothing to enhance the primary function…presenting books for reading.

Also,it’s great to have a device that does one thing well, instead of many things not so well, as evidenced on BGR and other tech blogs…

If you need all of the “toys” (i.e. apps), there are plenty of phones ( Android, Apple ) that van do that,no need for yet another.

And, it’ll be interesting to see how Android functions as an OS without all of the apps.

      • Dale

**should read “can do that” not “van do that”.

      • serpentor

Difference is the color Nook is an e-reader by software and e-ink Nook and Kindle are e-readers by hardware.

  • Christopher Cox

The only reason Kindle has an advantage over iPad as an e-book reader is the e-ink display. I use my iPad religiously now a days but have wanted a Kindle because of this. Why make a device like this with this kind of display? This will not sell well I’m predicting. Kindle is still on top.

  • iamajim

this could be the ‘poor mans’ tablet; just enough horsepower to surf the web, read a book or mag, even watch youtube-maybe. and even easily portable.

  • http://killinggames365.com/ Sam

I love it when new tech comes out now we just have to wait for Amazon to come out with their version.

    • What?

But Amazon has insisted that they have no intention of competing against the iPad; the Kindle is an entirely different product. Maybe there will be color one day, but overlaying a touch screen onto an e-Ink display seriously compromises it’s contrast. Compare the Sony touchscreen e-reader to any Kindle, even first generation. Sony’s screen is muddied and dark.

  • What?

B&N likes putting out inferior products after the market leader; first they try an e-reader after the Kindle, and now they try the NookColor after the iPad. I can’t wait to see what inferior, second-rate product they release next.
