Android Market hits 100,000 app milestone

Congratulations, Android fans — you now have a whopping 100,000 apps to choose from in the Android Market. The 100k milestone means Google is gaining ground on Apple’s App Store, which is now approaching 300,000 apps. Of course sheer volume isn’t the whole story when it comes to mobile app markets, and many would agree that Android and iOS share roughly the same garbage-to-gold ratio when it comes to available apps. Google has yet to formally announce this milestone through standard channels, though the company has confirmed the accomplishment via its AndroidDev Twitter account.

That is some imposter. As someone who works at VZW I can tell you first hand that the DROID market kills the iphone app store. Now I have used the VZW exclusive iphone I can tell you first hand that the DROID apps are far superior. Just look at the facebook app. DROIDS may not have chat, customizeable favorite pages or functional popup notifications, but it is opensource and that makes it so much better just knowing steve jobs didn’t have to personally approve it like he does each and every iphone app. DROID FTW!!!!

Quoting Steve Jobs tells us a lot about how accurate your believes about Android really are.

Remember Steve Jobs telling us how running Adobe Flash would let us fry an egg on the back of our phones? Strange, the millions of people out there running it aren’t playing hot-potato with their phones. He also said that Flash running on the iPad would reduce battery life to 1.5 hours, but people running Flash on their jailbroken iPads seem to be reporting little impact on battery life.

As for different hardware, I guess options are bad, hmm? Some of us like to buy a piece of hardware tailored to our needs.

As for crashing, I’ve never had my Android OS crash, so Steve obviously has no idea what he’s talking about. Poorly written applications can crash, but the same is true for Apple applications. And since Android allows 24 hours to be refunded for an application purchase, you aren’t screwed over if you end up buying something you don’t want.

It’s funny how “fragmentation” seems to be a problem for everyone except the folks who actually have Android phones. The Android app market is growing faster now than Apple’s, and iOS is losing market share as well.

Anyhow, I’ll leave it at that. I’ve been wasting my breath I’m sure, talking to someone that takes Steve’s every word as gospel.

Totally agree Electrofreak. Steve is starting to spew more and more fud as Android picks up steam and shows the world that iOS isn’t the end all be all of smartphone existence.

“Fragmentation” is something the majority of Android users have no idea even exists. They bought the phone with blur, sense, 2.0, 2.1 or 2.2 because they liked what they saw when doing their research. Only the technical community knows the difference! And that difference distinguishes manufacturer’s phones from one another. Have you ever seen an iPhone user show another iPhone user how cool they customized their home screen? No. They all look alike. Boring. A Droid X has a little different experience than someone with an EVO. That is by design and why there can be so many different Android devices. Competition among hardware vendors is GOOD for the consumer. Unlike the iPhone which is the same as the next. And the next. And the next.

Fragmentation is simply FUD. It’s been an issue in the PC world for 35 years now, and unless the programmer (excuse me, app developer) has a brain smaller than a chicken, fragmentation is a non-issue.

If a program (sorry, app) can’t handle running on different screen resolutions or devices, then it’s not the OS that’s at fault – it’s the slack-jawed drooling programmer (sorry, app developer) at fault.

I guess iOS developers fall into that category, since Steve is so insistent on protecting them from having to support anything more than just one platform…

I find it relaxing to search through 1-300 DROID apps before I find what I’m looking for or even something useful for that matter. It brings compeition and diversity. God I love opensource. I don’t know if 100,000 apps in the Android app store has the same value as 100,000 apps in the Apple app store.

Apple scrutinizes a lot of its apps and stops a lot from being published, whether that’s good or not is irrelevant. The point is that Apple’s apps are generally more polished, while there is a lot more garbage looking apps in the Android app store.

I own both an Android and an iOS device and the Android market looks more like a Walmart compared to Apple’s higher “brand” look.

Congratulation Google it only took you two years October 22, 2008 – October 25.2010 to get you 100k apps. Too bad it took Apple 16 months July 10, 2008 – November 4, 2009 for them to get their 100k apps. I thought Android market was growing faster than the App store???

biggest complaint about andriod market is that everything is developed for the latest version of andriod. People who have an LG Eve that is only about a year old are boned for getting any apps that require 1.6 or higher.

Not having software the same accross all the product really hurts developers because they could make an item that uses 2.2 and the majority of people using andriod will not be able to use it because their device hasn’t been given it.

Apple excell at this because they generally have their iOS streamlined across all types of iPhones.

Because andriod is implemented by multiple companies and google doesn’t force them to update andriod on the phones they can say screw it to some of them that they don’t feel it is worth to do it on.

heck my GF has the LG Eve can’t even update facebook on it because her andriod version is 1.5 and there is no higher version available for it.

Wait and see…in about one year, the truth will become appearant and Android will fall faster then it went up…It will be plagged with viruses embedded in some of these 100,000 and soon 200,000 and soon 300,000 uncontrolled apps. Phones are too small to have a proper antivirus therefor some Russian hacker will write up several viruses which will embed themselves in these “open” phones in the same way Windows “opens” system faces continuous threats. It took a long time for Steve to be proven right…but it happened…the same will happen here.

It would be awesome if I could some day browse the marketplace from a pc rather than always having to use one of their handsets. Opening up the marketplace would help people see what’s out there if they’re considering a handset but don’t know about the apps.

having an iPhone 3G for 1 year, then switching to my N1 for close to a year now, i have seen that there is WAY more garbage on the Android Market. and the bigger problem is that Google doesn’t highlight the best apps/games ENOUGH without making me do some serious digging. there are much better apps on Android than a year ago though.
