12-year-old discovers Firefox flaw, earns $3000 in the process

Software

A few months ago, Mozilla threw down the gauntlet by asking developers to find major security flaws in Firefox in return for a $3000 reward. Enter, Alex Miller from San Jose, who spotted a critical security flaw hidden away in the Firefox code. Alex spent 90 minutes every day for 10 days before he stumbled onto something and reported it to Firefox’s parent company. Security program manager at Firefox, Brandon Sterne, said: “Mozilla depends on contributors like these for our very, sort of, survival. Mozilla is a community mostly of volunteers. We really encourage people to get involved in the community. You don’t have to be a brilliant 12-year-old to do that”. Pretty impressive stuff. Hit the read link for the full article.

“Thomas Joseph”?? … Why do you even bother with the bullshit pen names? The buying public is not that stupid. (Just ask those counting the beans for what your ad engine generates). LMAO!

It really baffles my mind that you think we’d make up a writer’s identity.

No, Thomas Joseph isn’t a real person at all.

You do realize that Joseph is a common last name right? There was a former premier goaltender in the NHL who us now retired.

His nickname was Cujo! That was short for Curtis Joseph. So, Thomas Joseph sounds legit to me. Is that OK Dieter Bohn?

Dieter, is it lonely in your mother’s basement?

Now if he could figure out why Flash keeps crashing in Firefox for me. Cool story -and he donated part of the proceeds to charity.

90 minutes per day for 10 days = 15 hours.

    $3,000 / 15 hours = $200 per hour.

Not bad kid, not bad. :)

The flaw with Firefox is that it’s a dying browser because it’s no where as snappy and light as Chrome.

    • DoubleTalk

      blah blah blah…

      Try this:

On some websites, cause I have an HDTV, I have to zoom the site so it’s readable at maximum resolution but on a large screen. Firefox remember which webPAGES are zoomed at what level and whenever I return to them, are automatically zoomed to where I want them (notice I said PAGES and not sites, works well with something like… say…. NETFLIX).

      Now… try that w/ Chrome.

      Good luck.

    • Raul

Well at the very least Firefox is not growing.

  • Ryan Howard

I just struck out looking at this device.
