Verizon Wireless Q3 performance: 6% increase in revenue, 93.2 million customers

General

Verizon Communications announced its Q3 2010 earnings this morning and, buried in that spreadsheet, are the results for the Vodafone, Verizon joint venture that is Verizon Wireless. The company reported 997,000 net additions for the quarter along with a minuscule retail postpaid churn of 1.07%. Total revenue increased by 6% from the third quarter of last year and Verizon Wireless’ customer base now stands at 93.2 million. Other notable facts from the report:

  • Data revenue increased 5.2% year-over-year
  • Cash expense per customer was down to $26.88 from $27.59 the previous year
  • During Q3, Verizon sent more than 183 billion text messages, 3.8 billion picture messages, and saw users complete 22 million music/video downloads

    93.2 to 92.8 for AT&T.

For anyone actually serious, and not a blog retard, the race to 100 million sure is shaping up to be cool.

    • bringit

what is so cool about it? does not directly effect me one way or the other, could care less.

    • it really isn’t that close

This its what you need to compare I to att. They include connected devices in there number. In addition, the company had 7.9 million other connections at the end of the quarter –such as machine-to-machine and telematics –adding 251,000 net other connections in the quarter. This brings the number of total wireless connections to 101.1 million at the end of the third quarter.

If you look at over all, Verizon has over 100 million users. This coming quarter is going to be pretty big for Verizon. Lots of phones and data devices. New data plans, and hopefully new calling features that are being tested in SoCal, Texas, and Louisiana.

    • Corporate puppets for life

Explain to me one way this is “cool.”

  • Wtf

I guess data revenues would increase when you force everyone with a keyboard on their phone to give you an extra $10 a month.

    Go suck an egg vzw

    • Sonya The Real One

I do think the data requirement for 3G multimedia was 100% wrong. But they didn’t force you to do anything. I see a lot of people going to smart phones once the 28th brings the $15 data plan, and data revenue will again increase. A very wise decision to keep the unlimited data plan unlike AT&T.

    • Dave Lister

Get your facts right. There are phone w/ keyboards available that do not require any data plan. The LG Cosmos and Samsung Intensity II immediately come to mind.

    • jonnyboy

Asshole……ATT started that gig, so get your facts straight before talking like a real idiot

  • Nino

AT&T Will be the nations largest again.

Even with Verizon buying Alltel with 8million customers.

AT&T will be back on top, thanks iPhone.

    • Luis Nunez

They’ve had the phone for 3+ years now and still have been number 2.

      • Bennbr24

AT&T was actually number one before the iPhone and number one until verizon purchased altell. Since the acquisition of alltel At&t has been chipping away to get back to the number one spot.

      • M&M

Just like Verizon was number one before AT&T and Cingular merged which then put AT&T in the number one spot.

      • Rob

THANK YOU!!! All the AT&T fanboys love mentioning the Alltel merger but seem to forget AT&T did the same thing.

      • Dogfather

You forgot to mention prime-co and other regional carriers that slow-rizon swallowed before cingular-att merge…..!!!!!!!!

    • Johnathan

Nino is correct AT&T is only 500k people behind Verizon. AT&T should pass Verizon next quarter but if the iPhone does go to Verizon or other carrier Verizon will be number one again.

I wonder how much AT&T paid to have the exclusive rights for the iPhone. I know Verizon paid 13 billion to buy Alltel. I’d like to see who made the better deal to be the number one carrier in the US.

      • Ms. Incredible

I’m not sure if I agree with you johnathan. The iphone eventually won’t be exclusive forever, but in the mean time i’m sorry but android is killing it. I see people everyday switching off iphones and on to androids. People like variety and to be able to customize. I would love for boost mobile to go to number 1 that would be histerical. Just to spite everyone.

      • Johnathan

Android killing the iPhone ummm that’s a negative ghost rider. 2nd quarter 2010 Android outsold the iPhone by 2 million phones and that had more to do with the iPhone is only sold on ATT is the US, were Android on all 4 major carriers, becasue of that Android outsold the iPhone by 3 million in the US.
outside of the US the iPhone outsold Android.

Now last quarter Apple sold 14 million iPhones we have to wait to see how many Andoid phones were sold.

Thats great that were you live you see more Android phone because were I live I only see iPhones.

    • ChocoTaco

And when they lose the exclusivity, they are going to be bleeding customers faster than a prison camp on liberation day. People can’t wait to jump ship off that crap carrier.

  • Topher86

I love how everyone is comparing numbers of subscribers between these two giant networks and rooting for their provider to be king, and I must admit, a part of my fanboyism was showing, but I’m beginning to see this as less and less bandwidth to go around, which is giving more substance to carriers switching to tiered data plans. Enjoying it while you can, yeah?

    • Mr. Bill

I watched this happen on my Canadian Wcdma carrier, I was one of the first on it, enjoyed stellar speeds.
Since then in the last 6 months, i have seen it degrade an slow to slower then Cdma was in the first place.

Makes me wonder how the old cdma network is doing now that most are on the new Wcdma… I bet its faster at this point.

    • serpentor

No, not if you believe AT&T’s line about 1-2% of users causing congestion while the majority of users use less than 250mb, hence their $15 tier. If this is really the case than the new tiered rates wouldn’t affect network congestion at all. It would actually add more users because, “we’ve made it more affordable so more people can afford it.”

Verizon is sucking ATT’s nuts. they are not even close versus new additions, value per share and about 10 other areas. Verizon marketing is not winning against the ATT campaigns. neither does their so-called better network suck a nut Verizon.

I am a non biased party but if I’m a stock holder of any company. At&t is looking very attractive with the dividends they are paying

The discussion of the parent company at another site noted this.

“Verizon Wireless added 584,000 customers on contract-based plans in the quarter, roughly in line with analyst estimates. It’s about half of what it’s added in recent years, but still a healthy figure considering that nearly everyone already has a cell phone. However, when looking at all types of subscribers, Verizon Wireless added just 997,000 in the quarter, the lowest figure in a decade.

On Thursday, AT&T Inc., which has fewer subscribers overall, said it added 745,000 contract subscribers in the quarter, helped by the launch of a new iPhone model during the summer.

“Verizon Wireless has been touting phones running Google Inc.’s Android software as its answer to the iPhone. The strategy has been working well, even if it hasn’t quite been able to match AT&T’s figures. “

    • alen

that’s because the Droid has been around for only 2 years or so and is still building a brand. HTC and others are idiots in the branding department and their new phone names for every model. it’s like they have a dart board with a bunch of names and throw a dart to pick one

      • T

The Droid hasn’t even been around for 1 year yet…. it came out on November 6, 2009…

    • serpentor

AT&T was also helped by the fact that they allowed early contract renewals to get the iPhone.

What would the figures be like if they didin’t?

  • Jarrett

So Android has peaked as I stated previously? Of course, Android gets to plateau now for three or four months before The other US carriers get the iPhone (supposedly). After that Android drops below RIM and then will be overtaken by WP7, as sad as that will be.

    • serpentor

So Verizon’s numbers only include Android?

How did you get “Android has peaked” from this post?

      • Jarrett

Well okay, let us assume they only include Android. They added less than one million new subs. Let us assume At&t’s added sub’s only include iPhone. Apple beat all Android models on Verizon by a ratio of 2.5-1.

Now assuming those are not all Android phones, wouldn’t that mean the ratio is higher? Not being a dick just saying. All anyone on any of these forums ever say is how Android is exploding. According to Verizon’s quarter there is ‘ploding going on but im- not ex-.

The other thing other “smart” people say is that RIM is going out of business.

      • serpentor

The answer is NO. No it wouldn’t mean the ratio is higher. Here’s why – you would only be able to deduce that only if iPhone and Android were both the same percentage of their business. And I doubt it is.

But what would affect the numbers is:
        1. AT&T allowing early upgrades for iPhone 4, so they got more sales then they would have otherwise.
        2. Any phone introduced during the quarter that would skew the numbers.
        3. Whether both Verizon’s and AT&T’s numbers were from the same time period.

  • Jarrett

Also, I believe the reason why it was so low is because all the rumors of the iPhone and people waiting for it.

  • Perspective

Despite the Droid X and the Droid 2, as well as all the other Android sets, Verizon still can’t keep with AT&T, despite AT&T’s inferior network? I guess DROID DOESn’t lead to superior subscriber growth.

  • AndrewH

This chart says it all; if AT&T is so bad why does it keep beating Verizon?

      poor people like rollover minutes?
      # poor people > # not poor people

  • HeresTHEdeal

Umm… if we’re talking about poor people, that would more accurately depict Sprint, T-Mobile and below. AT&T and Verizon serve more customers with a higher credit score than Sprint and T-Mobile. People with good credit churn LESS, and people with poor credit churn MORE. People with poor credit usually have less money, as people with good credit usually have more. In regards to people with more poor credit on Verizon and AT&T, well, that’s where the high deposit comes into play. It either sends them on their way to churn somewhere else, or secures the company from loss if the subscription churns. Just sayin’…

  • jfr

The comparison of Verizon’s quarterly numbers to ATT’s tells me one thing, that despite Verizon’s marketing blitz pushing Android phones, they are still being outdone by the iPhone. And that is probably why a deal has been finally done to bring it to their network very soon.

  • Dogfather

Slow-rizon is crawling and crying desperate to get their hands on the Iphone numbers don’t lie but 2012 isn’t here yet….!!!!
