Microsoft Windows 7: 240 million copies sold in first year

Software

Microsoft confirmed on Thursday what the world has known for quite some time… Windows 7 is a hit. Gates’ legacy sold more than 240 million copies of its latest PC operating system in its first year of availability. The massive sales figure is confirmed to be a record by Microsoft, which currently holds over 91% of the PC operating system market according to Net Applications. Apple, owner of the second most popular PC operating system, holds approximately 5% of the market. The most lucrative PC segment, enterprise, also happens to be a hugely successful segment for Microsoft; Windows is currently used by 89% of businesses according to the Windows division’s financial head, Tami Reller. Mac might be gaining ground but it will be a long time before the pricey Apple PC brand puts any kind of significant dent in Microsoft’s market share.

    lol.

Actually it’s not apple who will kill microsoft. It’s google. Soon google will own 100% of the desktops with chrome and 100% of tablets and smartphones with android and 100% of online advertising and the world will be much much better! Long live google!

    • Goofan (aka Apple hater)

Oh and I forgot 100% of tv advertising with google tv!

    • Norm

You just made me wet. DROID!

      • Goofan (aka Apple hater)

Amen my brother. You and I know it. Total domination by google. These guys are down ranking us because they are Microsoft or apple apologists. And they hate us goo fans becuse we own them…

      • nefan65

Google? LOL. So tell me, what does Google have that runs on the desktop? Oh please…don’t say Chrome OS?!

Oh, and Android? Ya…nice for a phone I guess. The one’s I’ve used though didn’t really impress me at all.

    • http://www.twitter.com/theeclectic Steve

These Google fanboys are getting as annoying as the Apple fanboys.

  • xman

and about another 100 million was pirated…. as usual lol

  • http://xxdesmusxx.net xxdesmus

so how many copies of Snow Leopard did Apple move in 1 year … oh right. That’s what I thought.

    • Goofan (aka Apple hater)

Apple doesn’t sell crap. Most eir announcements are unsubstantiated. They sold about 5 copies of snow leopard and 7 macs last quarter…

      • nefan65

LOL…right…and MS is all fact, and truth..LMAO…

      • T

You do realize he’s just a troll thinking he categorizes all those that are “Google fans” with his statements, right? There’s nothing serious about the post… you’ll also see posts by “Typical VZW D-BAG” doing the same things in threads about AT&T….

      • nefan65

        Ya…but I felt compelled to say something…lol

    Apple fanboy logic:

-iPhones are the most popular smartphones on the market therefore it is the “best” phone out.

-Windows is the the most popular desktop OS but it still “sucks” compared to OSX.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand how that works.

    • Tdot34

      Actually their logic is:

What ever Master Jobs releases is the defacto best thing on the market.

      • Jarrett

I think we can all agree that whatever products we purchase and choose to use are what we believe to be the best. Otherwise, wouldn’t that suggest that we made a poor purchase?

      • Brian

Or conversely, we can all agree that whatever product we purchased works for us and not get caught up in silly, meaningless arguments about who’s is better.

        But that’s just my opinion.

      • trooth

I buy an economical car that I can afford but I am envious of many cars I will never be able to buy. Apple makes some nice upper end computers, but I really am not envious of it. I would buy it and still run windows 7.

    • Mitch

Brian, I am not an Apple fanboy but I can understand one part of their reasoning.

With Windows, all manufacturers don’t offer an OSX option. It is all MS by default, there is no option.

I personally hate Windows for many but I don’t want to pony up my hard earned money for a Mac, and I am not saavy enough to do a hackintosh.

  • nefan65

Wow…amazing…that’s 240 Million known idiots in the world….LOL!!!

    • badchad

Right, because the fanboys that deepthroat all Apple’s sales data and can’t comprehend the use of percentages…

And finish statements with “OMFG, LOLOZ, H8TRZ, STFU” are so much more intelligent.

      • nefan65

Wow…I don’t deep throat anything or anyone. However, sounds like you have quite a bit of experience in that department. I prefer M/F relationships…but it’s good to know the Govt is making strides for for you folks, and same sex marriages…good luck with that by the way!

    • win7user

Well you could be more wrong. Windows 7 has proven to be an excellent OS and at least Windows users do not have to sink to the following low to acquire amazing hardware and software OS.

      • Tdot34

        LMAO! Isnt that the truth!

  • http://c3dude.wordpress.com c3dude

windows 7 was a vast improvement. No surprise here.

some of us like an os where we can change anything about how it works. What can you change on osx? Oh right, your desktop background.

    • lolmoney

have fun changing virus scanners every so often my mac is as fast as it was the day i bought it.

FYI, I own both PC and MAC.

      • T

Viruses are a thing of the past… spyware and malware are the present and the future…. and nobody is safe from that.

      • trooth

I know Apple fanbois aren’t the smartest in the world, but how hard is it to download avg/avast/microsoft security eseentials (yes it is actually pretty good now), and set it to update at 4:00AM? If you think that is too much to go through, do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from linux or anything open source. You need Steve Jobs holding your hand telling you it will be alright, he will protect you from the nasty flash software and other evils in the computer world.

  • Dave

i am exclusively a windows user and my gf exclusively a mac user. i cant count the number of times she has had issues with her macbook and how slow it got, on the other hand i havent had to do reinstall windows in a long time nor have i had a virus in the past 7 years.

    • nefan65

Sounds like your GF isn’t too bright. Maybe she shouldn’t be using a computer at all…?

I’ve know far more people with Windows 7 issues and hardware than that of Mac users…

    • Larry Johnson

people who get virus are dumb. i am dumb, i torrent tons of stuff and to this day have not installed a anti virus program or firewall. why you ask? WHY? WHY WOULD I DO SUCH THINGS?……..I like to wipe and reinstall my hit every 3 or 4 months. makes me feel like i got a brand new computer.

    • T

Tell her to uninstall Snow Leopard and stick with Leopard…

      Seriously.

  • Larry Johnson

    viruses*

    • RT

want to know why most viruses are on windows? Because Apple only owns 5% of the market! Do you think the a-holes that develop viruses are going to waste their time on 5% of the market?

  • Mr. Bill

    Congrats MS and crew.

  • Mgl323

I am enjoying windows 7 (coming from a guy who used XP for years). Looking to buy a MacBook pro in the future to enjoy best of both worlds.

  • Gag

I can’t say that I’m surprised and for once, I am happy for their success. Windows 7 is the best OS they have ever put out. It’s stable, runs fast, and it even performs better than XP did on my dinosaur laptop.

  • Vijay

Windows 7 rocks. the best, and fastest. Easy to install, automatically gets all drivers, everything is so automated. So, no wonder its the best seller.

Want to see more of microsoft products dominating the market as opposed to the mediocre or operatings systems that don’t have enough apps to support all operations

    • nefan65

Such as? What’s lacking in the other OS’s? Have yet to experience that with non-Windows OS’s. I guess games, but I don’t have time for that…I work for a living. So I guess if games were important, then ya…but that’s why they make XBOX, PS3, etc…

  • roebling

Why not? Win7′s their best yet, best since Win2k, for sure.

  • RT

Apple makes a ton of money off a lot of products, but when it comes to PC operating systems Apple is still getting @ss raped by Microsoft and there is nothing any of the fanboys can do about it! 5% of the market means your not even a competitor!

  • Scott

I have to say, I wasn’t a big fan of Vista, so I kept using XP. Once I got a hold of a good cracked version of 7, loaded it up, I’ve been enjoying the upgrade ever since. Now… if only they wouldn’t charge and arm and a leg of an OS!

    • Mr. Bill

Nice thing about MS an windows, you don’t have to buy a totally new os install each time theres an update.

It’s supported for more then one year at a shot.

  • Mike

    I Luhrv Windows 7.

  • Luke

windows 7 is so intuitive and great, so many little things that make my life easier, as a user of cpu intensive audio applications such as cubase, its amazing how much of an improvement it is over vista, im happy for microsoft, keep up the good work
