If you’ve got a network connected Wii and a Netflix account with streaming capabilities, today is your lucky day. Via a press release, Nintendo and Netflix announced that U.S. and Canadian subscribers will be able to download and install software directly to their Wii consoles to allow Instant Queue streaming. Previously, the Wii console required a Netflix CD to be inserted in the disc drive for Instant Queue access. The software is available for free from the Wii Shop Channel on your console. The full press release is after the break.

Netflix Now Available as a Download from the Wii Shop Channel

Watching Movies and TV Shows Streamed Instantly from Netflix is Now Just a Click Away

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Beginning today, Netflix members in the United States and Canada can stream content through their Wii™ consoles with Netflix installed on their Wii Menu. The Netflix disc that was used for instant streaming on the Wii console will no longer be required. Netflix members who have a plan starting at $8.99 a month ($7.99 in Canada), a Wii console and a broadband Internet connection can now instantly watch movies and TV shows streamed directly to their TVs by simply downloading Netflix from the Wii Shop Channel. This new channel is available at no extra cost. The new disc-free option installs Netflix on the Wii Menu, making it convenient for Wii owners to quickly access streaming movies and TV shows.

“At this time of year, consumers have a near-insatiable demand for family entertainment,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “And this simplified Netflix access will help bring families together more quickly, more easily and in more ways than ever before. More than 3 million Wii systems have already connected to Netflix, demonstrating how easy the service is to set up and use.”

“Wii is a consummate home entertainment platform and has quickly become one of the best and most popular ways to enjoy movies streamed from Netflix,” said Reed Hastings, co-founder and CEO of Netflix. “The availability of Netflix right on the Wii Menu adds significantly to the ease and convenience that attracts our members to the Netflix streaming experience and is an important step in our efforts to continuously improve the service.”

Wii offers consumers the most fun right out of the box. Precision motion controls, online access and great games are all included at no extra charge. For a suggested retail price of just $199.99 ($209.99 in Canada), Wii owners get:

  • The Wii console, Wii Sports™, Wii Sports Resort™, a Wii Remote™ controller, a Wii MotionPlus™ accessory and a Nunchuk™ controller
  • Access* to hundreds of downloadable games in the Wii Shop Channel, including original games like World of Goo and classic games from the NES™, Super NES™ and Nintendo 64™ eras

  • Howmuch HD?

I’d consider this but only if there were a lot of blue-ray quality titles.

Else… I’ll just use on-demand with FIOS if I want to rent something.

Streaming DVD quality is of no interest to me.

You’re aware that the PS3 has 1080p and surround sound streaming starting today (Also without a disc), right?

Way to steal the PS3′s thunder, Nintendo! Well played!

      • ?

Actually u need the netflix disk to watch movies but it is in 1080… The xbox on the other hand needs no disk and rocks at 1080..

      • T

Actually, no you don’t… which is exactly what he’s saying. It does 1080p and full surround sound now with the installed Netflix version that came out today…. just like he said… and xbox rocks at 1080i with no surround sound.

      • ?

For the PS3, you need a disk to run Netflix.

      • T

I’ll tell you one more time since you’re obviously an idiot. For the PS3, you DO NOT need a disc to run Netflix. The installed version was released the *SAME DAY* as the Wii version and it does 1080p and full surround sound.

I’m aware the PS3 can do a lot of things but I’m more of a PC Gamer and don’t own one.

I do have a Wii sitting around that doesn’t get used much these days that I would maybe use for this purpose (although I could pipe content through my PC as well).

Was just curious as to what the offerings were.

Last time I checked netflix wasn’t giving enough 1080p content to make me switch from my current setup regardless of what you “streamed” it through.

Haven’t really checked out how many more titles they’ve added recently… but right now playing the FIOS and Comcast see-saw-switch and normally having three free premium HD channels I have a LOT of free HD movies I can watch whenever I want…

Either way, flip your Wii around and check those outputs. If you see one capable 1080 anything let me know because that would be magical.

      • T

Well… those outputs exist, actually… the Wii has component out, which is enough for 1080i, covering your “1080 anything” statement….. it’s just the weak guts of the system that limit it to 480p. Not anything to do with output.

So…. what is your point again? Hint: I don’t care about your setup. Good for you. Want a cookie? Or should I attention-whore out my HTPC setup so i can make a senseless comment too?

  • Hiyo!

Sorry kids– no Disney Dance Revolution tonight. You want to watch The Office with Daddy?

  • Abuthemagician

MAN! I just got this setup using a WAD version of the DVD! Way to make me waste my time!

  • Jamie

I got this for PS3 and use Netflix over any cable/dish service. It’s going to be so nice not having to flip discs when I want to go from watching TV/movies on Netflix to playing a game/watching a blu-ray and vice versa.

Honestly, I thought it was ridiculous that you had to have a streaming disc in the first place.

    • Willis

I know. That sucks. I always had to make the trip out of the depths of my mom’s basement to flip discs. PITA!

  • Rob

Wow, that’s great, now if they would just allow me to stream something I would actually want to watch…….

    • Steve Jabroni

Yeah, Netflix doesn’t have geriatric gay porn, suck don’t it?

  • Fisch

wow welcome to two weeks ago?

  • Androidfan

i have a 22 inch tv. This is great for me. Less disc swapping is also great.

  • phone capo

cool using this on my ps3 now
