VentureBeat: Apple's App Store hits 300,000 applications

Rumor

VentureBeat is reporting that Apple’s iOS application store crossed the 300,000 app threshold in the last 24-hours. The publication cites data from analytics firm Mobclix and notes that Apple added over 1,000 applications in the last few days to achieve the goal. Apple certainly has had plenty of momentum over the last few days. Next week, the company is set to announce quarterly earnings and host a media event where they will presumably release details about their next generation desktop operating system, Mac OS X 10.7; Apple’s stock price is currently at an all-time high of $314.74 per share. Like Apple or not, they are more or less printing money in Cupertino these days.

UPDATE: We asked Apple for comment, here is what they provided us: “Our most recent App Store number was in the Verizon and AT&T releases this past week. Over 280,000.”

DROID market is far superior and has a way better selection. Does the Apple market even have a task killer app yet? DROID DOES. In fact DROID has over 100 task killer apps.

    • nutzaboutpoker86

I’m assuming your joking, right? Apple iOS products don’t need a “task killer”.

      • iMiiTH

That’s because iOS doesn’t have real multitasking.

      • sirpaul

        you’re = you are
        your = belonging to you

      • Doc

thank you. was about to post same thing. it’s not that effing hard to get it right.

    • bringit

      king of the idiot trolls.

    • MZ

There’s no need for a task killer app… iOS works… unlike Android that keeps freezing.

Strange how the Android termites come out of the woodwork when there’s a discussion about the iphone or Apple Apps. It’s like they are either envious or just trying to make themselves feel good that they bought a product that’s not quite up to the competition.

    • destardi

What? The first post was made in sarcasm.

And FYI, apple termites come out whenever there’s a discussion about Android.

      Wake up.

I guess Android/Apple are like 2 peas in a pod when it comes to fans.

      • ?

Android people do seem to come out more on a Apple article vs an Android one.

      • Topher86

        BlackBerry ftw!

      • Doc

        you poor thing =/
        you’ll learn soon enough

Apple fanboys assume that EVERYONE on the planet wants their beloved device. Nothing else in the world matters to them. They drank the applejuice and got the the tattoo on their ass. Forever they ONLY see Apple as good. Everything else is inferior.

        FACT of a fanboy…

  • destardi

Actually there is one thing that Android Market has on apps: the 24 hour purchase/refund ability.

    Sweet.

Also, are there any apps for O/S4 that might be able to do this?

    http://www.downloadsquad.com/2010/10/11/new-technology-assigns-ip-address-to-each-of-your-organs-report/

i’ve seen some amazing stuff with iphone, so not sure if there is anything in the works.

    • Flacofromny

Actually yes. Apple been doing that for a long time. I forgot the app but I think there’s a few apps for that.

    • Cap’n Paul

Don’t you realize that’s a sales pitch. THE LAW… anywhere in the U.S. allows you to return ANYTHING within 72 hours under ‘buyers right of remorse’…

  • justme

I jumped on here just to check it out and some of this is ridiculous. Will I argue that my HTC Incredible smashes the iPhone? In a heartbeat. But this guy saying: “In fact DROID has over 100 task killer apps.”
Bud for real, you dont have anything better to say? Bragging that there is over 100 task killer apps, thats to many and not just because its a task killer, simply because there is way to many! But both platforms have that problem with an extreme amount of the same things available. And this guy: “It’s like they are either envious or just trying to make themselves feel good that they bought a product that’s not quite up to the competition.” Envious or trying to make us feel better?? Had the the 3G and 3GS and what I can do with the Incred without having to root(jailbreak) none of them can hold a candle to it period. Its just nice to see so many people that argue over peddly little stuff like this when Droid Does guy, do you realize that trying to compare apps inbetween the two is pointless?? Examples being: Bump, Angry Birds, Epocrates and so on and so on. I am 100% pro Android, but am very excited to see numbers like these on other platforms. Just gets me thinking of what it is going to be like when cross platform becomes more integrated into all of these systems besides only a few games.

    • Reason

I love my iPhone but I respect what your saying and agree. Each device has likes/dislikes but the tit for tat that goes on gets pretty childish. And more so now are devs creating apps for all platforms so smartphones can interact rather than iPhone with iPhone and android with android, for instance PingChat…app made for all smartphones. Let’s all just get along.

      • CrabClaw

        Mmmmmmm tits.

    • Flacofromny

I wish all android fan were like you. Thank you for that. They should be more intelligent like you and stop saying stupid comments as Android is better iPhone is garbage.
I’m an iPhone owner since 2007 and ain’t going to lie I do like android but for now I keep my iPhone until android get great apps I remain an iPhone user plus I invest a lot of money on apps if I go android gonna have to pay again. That’s another reason why I dont go android. I’m getting kind of sick of iPhone lack of great notification n widgets.

    • Goofan (aka Apple hater)

I agree justme andorid phones can do stuff that no other computer in the world can do. Plus you can run 100-200 aoolicatons at the same time and spend about 2% battery for up to 3 months. The iPhones are ugly and don’t work right like you say.

    • Timothy873261.0

big difference in “to” & “too”

      just sayin’

    • Cap’n Paul

glad you made the to/too comment…
but it shows the level of intellect making the comment, who also, having stated how foolish it was to take the time debating the topic, had the longest comment to point

  • Eric

I knew I should have bought Apple stock when it dropped from $180 to $80 not all that long ago (late 2008/early 2009). If this continues, I wonder how much the stock will go up when (if?) the iPhone and a true iPad (v2) comes to Verizon? Not counting the current WiFi and MiFi Verizon bundle.

  • Erik

299 million of them are fart apps right fandroids? :)

Too many apps for me, although i have no better solutions to offer, i hope apple comes up with a better way to browse because i often am not able to find apps i would be interested in. Ill be fine with my current ones :)

    • F1

      I agree with you Erik,
this is critical, since both parties, the consumers & the developers need to get direct feedback.

      APPLE needs to:

      1. Simplify the cataloging process, simply because the number of applications could hit or well exceed 1 million, it is just a question of time, at that point it will be like searching for a next generation “book”.

      2. Create a consumer friendly “Refund/Exchange” policy, whereby the consumer is monitored so that there is no abuse the the above said policy, yet it is imperative that there be a recourse, if the product “within reason”, fails to deliver what it promises, have it pulled with consequences.

Maybe a third party, could create a review site, whereby people could “study” their potential purchase, prior to spending their hard earned money.

In closing, it should not be a “one-way” sales transaction, whereby profiting of APPLE and it’s vendors, i.e. the developers would be guaranteed, without accountability, it should fairly balanced, otherwise all parties will suffer losses, which in return, will cause the failure of this model and hurt the consumers.

      Thank You

      • nutzaboutpoker86

“Maybe a third party, could create a review site, whereby people could “study” their potential purchase, prior to spending their hard earned money.”

-Isn’t this what the customer reviews section is for?

      • F1

Additional “REVIEW” options…would reduce bias feedback, hence ensuring a broader range of feedback from various perspectives.

Just like any other product can be reviewed on alternative sites, i.e. SONY,Best Buy…. Thank You

  • Voice Of Experience

    Ummm….Yeah

Like the Android market you have 400 apps with different names that all do the same thing spread all over these great markets.

100 apps to teach you how to tie a necktie. 300 to help you put on eyeliner.

    Yeah, that’s impressive.

Keep selling that shoeshine Googs & Apple

    • Topher86

Exactly. Everyone’s too busy looking at the quantity not realizing that only about 25% of those apps are worth using.

      • MicroNix

And out of that 25%, there’s only a dozen or so that fits your daily life…

      • Hard Work

You guys are idiots, i have a andriod and a ipod touch you cant even compare the two , apples appstore blows andriod out the water i was expecting alot more from the android app market but was extremely disappointed, seriously soo sick of fanboys

  • Oggles of Googles

“100 apps to teach you how to tie a necktie. 300 to help you put on eyeliner”

But ah, hmmm, ughhh, errr……They’re free!

Even though it’s all played the same, I love having 32 versions of tic-tac-toe.

  • Residence

Apps grow, profits grow, just about everything grows except your bars with that shitty antenna.

    • Voice Of Experience

Everything grows except the intelligence of the dolts who ohh and ahhh and wet their pants because there are 300,000 apps.

BTW, I’m still waiting for my 17th McDonalds McRib Locater.

Will it be Googs or Apple who gets that to me first?

    • Perspective

This would be a better point if it actually mattered. Ultimately it’s about sales and profit, not how many bars are visible on the phone. With $3.25 billion in profit last quarter (i.e. more than $1 billion per month), Apple’s financials are stellar. It’s a business; money matters.

      • Voice Of Experience

        Thats true.

Job’s has only one app on his personal iPhone and it’s not available in the 300,000 app market.

        It’s the money printing app.

      • Shanghai Dan

Google just turned in $2.2 billion a single quarter, not far behind Apple. And they did it with a LOT less revenue; Google’s business model has a much higher profit margin. They make money from Apple users as well as Android users; the counter doesn’t really ring true.

  • serpentor

Andrew you forgot to also file this under “stuff no one gives a fcuk about.”

    • Norm

no kidding. more DROID news please! Thanks!

  • Apples

300,000 apps for the app store huh? i wonder how much android market has 10,000?

  • Mr. Bill

    That is pretty amazing.

Kind of like ants, maybe be different species, but they all look the same to me.

  • Mgl323

The application must have significantly jumped since developers can use 3rd party tools to create apps. Other than that 300,000 apps is pretty great since the launch of the app store at 2008.

  • Kirow

In other news, apple has just surpased 250.000 fart apps.
