Is this the new MacBook Air? Both 11.6 and 13.3-inch models coming next week?

General

With only five days until Apple’s Back to Mac press event, the rumors are flying in thick and fast. Speculation around Apple’s refreshed MacBook Air is growing daily, and there are some new reports that just surfaced. Earlier in the week, the 11.6-inch display rumor popped up again, but last night, Engadget received some photos on what they believe to be an early prototype for the new MacBook Air. Except… the unit pictured in the photo seems to house a 13.3″ screen. Additionally, the machine appears to run the same under-powered Core 2 Duo seen in the current generation, though it is possible since the laptop was not in final form, the internals have been upgraded.

Earlier in the week, Apple Insider rumored that the new MacBook Air computer would contain no conventional hard disk drive or solid-state drive. The new Air would supposedly opt for a high capacity “SSD card” instead. AppleInsider has also followed up on their original report with some new information, and from what one of their sources is telling them, Apple will actually launch both rumored models — 11.6″ and 13.3″ display notebooks.

So guys, is this the new MacBook Air we are looking at?

I still don’t know anyone with a MacBook AIR. Are they selling?

    • DaHarder

Yes they are, but I find rather interesting that the sticker on the right hand side of this photo clearly says Compaq… or is that a ruse of some sort?

      • sirpaul

        Good eye…it does say Compaq!

    • mwrg

I’ve had one since early 2008. Love it.

I know a few folk with ‘em. They’re pretty niche bein’ so expensive. We’ll see if the pricing changes at all :)

Macbook Air? The popularity of the iPad has pretty much sealed the fate of the Macbook Air. This product should be shelver completely in my opinion. Bring on the 7 inch iPad and completely discontinue the Macbook Air. Its time has come and gone. I sold mine on ebay 3 months ago. I rarely used it, and I knew no one, besides myself who even owned one.

    • Perspective

These iPad and the Macbook Air aren’t even remotely comparable, and your inability to discern the obvious difference between the two is why your opinion is meaningless. Cheers.

Agreed. Definitely two entirely different markets. However, if the new Air runs MacOS and that long rumored $ 799 price point, I think El Jobso and Co. have a good formula for success.

      • nutzaboutpoker86

        I’d buy one for $799!

        Dear Perspective,
        Drop dead you fucking tranny!

You are not a nice person.

      • Jezz (like jizz but with an ‘e’)

..Somebody got their feelings hurt by being proven wrong.

You can’t do flash, or serious work on a touchscreen tablet. Ever tried to edit a spreadsheet, or type an essay on an iPad?

      • Goofan (aka Apple hater)

Where are you norm. Tell them how the droidpad will be able to read your mind and works better than any apple product?

  • Jay

I got excited because I thought there was some new leak. Nope. Just yesterday’s news :(

  • derloos

    11.6″ touchscreen/CortexA15 1.5GHz dual-core/128GB SSD/iOS 4.x – smth like this please.

  • blkrabb1t

ULV Core i-series chips would be a nice addition, but I’m not counting on that happening since the MBP didn’t get them. Also I hope that Apple actually bothers to update the RAM on the pc. 2GB is not enough nowadays.

I like my IPAD ! it’s nice and lite great to travel with, but there times that I go back to my lap top for the convence of the keyboard, able to plug in the USB drive. camera, and several others reasons.
Maybe the new Air will cover the things I miss on the IPad.
Who needs a 7″ IPad, get an IPod Touch.

  • cee

Damn! I thought we are in a recession. All this stuff coming out and people with no jobs. Apple products are good but too expensive. My home pc and my Epic 4g is all i need.

  • umm what?

  • Martin

    Meh.

  • Leos

Amaing, more overpriced shit from the nazi company.

    • Goofan (aka Apple hater)

You tell them leos! Go to google the company of the lord…

  • Slash

Is that 4 batteries I see?

  • phuzzykiller

While I am definitely NOT an Apple fan, I can see the appeal of the regular Macbook, iPad, and even iPhone…. but this??? Who on earth, other than pure geeks (aka those of us who pay attention to this site), would want such a thing? Not to mention Apple’s traditional high cost for all of their products…..
MacBook AIR = FAIL x2 perhaps?

I still don’t know anyone with a MacBook AIR. Are they selling this?

  • TC

Bring on the big yellow envelope so we can put it in and pull it out

  • MacMan

People need to quit complaining about apple products being too expensive. Do you cry about Ferrari’s being too expensive also ? Get a real job and quit crying.

  • Matt

Or for 2 grand I can get an alienware 15inch model that would murder any apple laptop and get away with it, yeah its heavy and the battery life sucks but its worth it.

  • Dave

the price is a huge aspect! the previous one was just overpriced and little functionality, however if the the new one comes with a lower price (much lower) and higher function I would be the first one to buy one! and i’m sure many other would! but if the new one follows the previous one forget about it!
