Powermat working with manufacturers to get wireless charging into handsets

Accessories

According to blog TechRadar, mobile accessory maker Powermat will be working with phone manufacturers to incorporate their wireless charging technology into mobile devices. Currently, the company makes special cases and battery doors for a handful of small electronics to provide wireless charging via its Powermat base station. “We are looking into putting the technology into phones but it is a complex process,” said a Powermat spokesperson. The same spokesperson also went on to say we should start seeing phones with Powermat technology sometime in 2011.

Native, OEM supported wireless charging — which the Palm Touchstone already provides — does add a certain amount of convenience to digital life. It will be interesting to see exactly which manufacturers jump on the Powermat bandwagon.

Palm should have been more agressive with its touchstone charging mechanism. This is yet again another missed oppurtunity amongst many that poor company is going to miss out on.

Hopefully no one jumps on this bandwagon, and OEMs are smart enough to use the new wireless chanrging standard rather then jumping into bed with proprietary technology like that offered by Powermat.

If I understand the technology right, there is no need to incorporate it in to phone… i think it is possible to make a battery to do all the charging

my mom loves this gadget, i bought it for my parents for xmas and she is the only one that uses it. you do need a separate battery pack for it to charge so it would be cool if it were in the phone or battery itself…this would save on buy external parts and maybe lead more people to use it

If manufacturers begin developing this to be included in their devices it will really take off…I am looking forward to it!

If its truly induction capable, holding it near the stove or your ignition coil should charge your phone as well.
Though when the coils field collapses, its near 80K an up in some cases, time for rapid charging lol.

    Many things, leak energy.

Why would an OEM’s forego their own charging solutions (losing profits) for this?! Doesn’t make sense. And now that Duracell and Energizer are in this market the powermat will be gone within a year!

Exactly, not to mention added bulk to the phone…
