Apple's stock tops $300, U.S. market share at 10%

General

It certainly was a good day for Cupertino-based electronics company, Apple Inc. The company’s stock hit an all-time high of $301.96 per share — before closing at a more modest $300.14 per share — and, according to Gartner research, Apple now holds 10.4% of U.S. computer sales.

Market analytic firm Gartner is reporting that U.S. PC sales grew by roughly 2.2% from Q3 in 2009 to Q3 in 2010. In that same time period, Apple PC shipments increased by 13.7% to total 1.83 million units. Apple is now positioned fourth in shipments amongst U.S. PC manufacturers, trailing third-place Acer by roughly 17,000 units. HP and Dell hold the number one and two spots respectively and collectively account for over 50% of U.S. PC sales.

Gartner’s study isn’t all flowers and lollipops for Apple. The iCompany did not manage to break into the top six vendors in worldwide PC shipments for Q3; the top six companies are (in order): HP, Acer, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Toshiba. The worldwide PC market grew 7.6% year-over-year.

If the lack of international mojo has the folks in Cupertino feeling a bit inadequate, just remember this: your market capitalization is currently $274.2 billion… that’s just over a quarter of a trillion dollars and more than double the market caps of HP and Dell combined.

I believe the WIFI only ipad should be counted towards the Apple PC shipments but they are not. The 3G ipads should be counted as mobile devices separately.

$274B is more than a quarter of a trillion. Don’t trust me: multiply 274 by 4 and see the result.

    • bringit

And…that’s why it says “that’s just over a quarter of a trillion dollars”.

    • Joe

I’m glad you have your basic calculator skills down, but the iPad should NOT count towards any computer sales. If you’re gonna mark it in any category NOT named “tablet,” it should be in the PMP category, just like the iPods.

  • Tdot34

Holy speculation bat-man. The run up is solely due to the announcement that they will be announcing something on Oct 20th. Let me know when they start issuing a dividend.

  • Faalkor

The impending demise of Apple has been greatly overstated by many Android fans….

    • ?

they will be here like the shadow people in ghost… android fans love to hate Apple…

      • MicroNix

Now that you say it….odd that their stock goes up when they are now getting spanked by Android…

      • ?

        speak of the devil..

      • WP7

Perhaps because Android makes no money for Google.

      • Shanghai Dan
      • Jarrett

        @ WP7,

iPhone alone was responsible for $5.8 Billion for Apple last quarter. Throw in iPod Touch and iPad and you are looking at $8 Billion. That is one quarter. So roughly, iOS will make Apple $30 Billion this year alone.

What, by the time Google is making that $10 Billion a year with Android iOS will be earning Apple $100 Billion with iOS?

Numbers can be fun, especially when you make them relevant with number one’s numbers.

  • eddie

Why should they be counted as a PC it they run an iPod software??

  • Speed racer

As a shareholder and financial advisor this makes me quite pleased. Props to you Apple.

    • Badonkadonk

As a former shareholder (in at $80, out at $250), I’m also pleased for Apple but am obv now sad I got out this summer…

People also seem to forget that Apple does a lot more than sell phones. And while Android *sales* (not market share) may be higher than Apple (and BB), Apple is still selling a healthy number of phones.

I would be looking to invest in MOT and HTC again if you’re an android fan, not Google. The HW sales carry the high margins (as evidenced again by RIM and Apple); the ad revenue from the OS is not as substantial (but is almost 100% profit).

  • Sonya

Jarrett must be changing his pants.

    • Jarrett

Why would I be changing my pants? I don’t own any shares of Apple. Haven’t for many years. Although, if your idea is that I have been saying the takeover is coming for a few years, you would be correct.

  • MacMan

    Fu*k PC.

  • Hockey88

MacMan…10% of the US market as compared to PCs does not entitle you to F___ anyone.

    • MacMan

10% is just about all the smart people left in the US so yeah…

      • T

Actually it says 10% of people are dumb enough to buy shit computers to go with their phone… whoopdeedoo. Snow Leopard is Apple’s Vista, if not their ME. It sucks. And anyone that says otherwise never used any other OSX version. It’s a good thing they switched away from plastic laptops too, everyone was happy when those awesome magnets they use broke their 400 dollar keyboard face plate…

    • David

True, 10% of the PC market, and probably less than that in the smartphone market does not necessarily entitle one to F_ MSFT or GOOG. I think its the 50 billion in the bank that does it. I wonder what the market cap will be when it hits 15% in the two markets? And 15% of online advertising? Hopefully 100% of the iPad market will keep Apple going til then. And what about that amazing new machine that will be announced January of 2012? Droidboys, put your money where your mouth is and short AAPL. I double-dog dare you.

  • Alex

@micronix. Learn the difference between market and capital shares before making such a comment. Android may have a bigger market share, but Apple has a bigger capital share. Take note that ios is exclusive only to the iphone while android is on multiple devices, so naturally, it would surpass ios’ market share, but it does not necessarily mean that it would have a bigger capital share.

    • Diamondpro

If that statement were true then how the f___ did apple and android surpass windows mobile even though windows mobile had more then 2x the amount of devices? Android is raw and Google > Crapple plan and simple The top phone is not the iphone 4 the top computers are not macs. The best phones are Android and the Best computer are PC’s

      • Iboy

Which single Android phone outsold the Iphone?? Really? I want to know.

      • T

Single devices matter how? You bought a fashion statement. In effect, you’ve got your forearm covered in Silly Bands every time you pull that thing out. Yeah, you’re that lame.

      • Michael

lol @ fashion statement. Iphone spanks android. Smoother. Faster to get to where you wanna go. Funny to see google trying to copy apple.Look @ the galaxy s. It’s pure iphone envy!

      • T

Smoother? Faster? Time to actually USE another phone… be it Palm WebOS, Android or a Motorola Bag-Phone… being blinded by fanboyism is never a good thing.

And the looks? Ouch… yeah, it’s got pure iPhone envy… and iPhone has pure LG Prada envy. And AMOLED envy. And battery envy. And limited storage envy. And wireless syncing envy. And gorilla glass envy. And antenna envy. And carrier envy. And multitasking envy. And bluetooth envy. And multiple email account envy. And camera envy. And Flash envy. And AIR envy. And Consumer Reports envy. And proper video chat envy. And if old enough, GPS envy.

      • Iboy

lol! DroidTards are soooo funny! Where did you get that from… a free joke app from your shabby app market? Please run back to your mother’s basement with that crap linux boy!

      • T

iPhags are even funnier… because your phone sucks and is incredibly limited, you grasp at straws to try and sound funny or intelligent in sneaking in your last word. The fact WebOS does virtually everything listed here, yet the iToy doesn’t, really illustrates where you stand in the pecking order.

    • Badonkadonk

Android doesn’t have a larger market share, they just surpassed Apple in August sales this year, which while novel, is silly when you don’t have the raw data.

If I sold 10 phones in 2009 and sold 100 phones in 2010 that’s a 1000% improvement, whereas if I sold 1000 phones in 2009 and 1100 in 2010 that’s a 10% improvement. Obviously 1000% > 10% but 2100 > 110 phones. RIM still has the largest market share (in terms of total in-field devices being used), with Apple second and Android third. WinMo and Palm are not close.

  • http://www.elnegy.com Henry Aladiume

At $300.14 per share and market capitalization of $274.2 billion Apple has certainly become the largest technology company.According to Henry Aladiume,CEO of http://www.elnegy.com the success of Apple is a tribute to the power of innovation;triumph of the free market and the genius of Steve Jobs.Steve Jobs is certainly a guy who thinks out of the box and has a way of developing new products that deliver value. However, just other technology companies(IBM,Yahoo,Microsoft) that reached a peak in their lifecycles ,matured and no longer witnessed rapid growth-some analysts are wondering just how long Apple’s growth will continue?

    • u

lets start counting their new cash cow, advertising.
gonna beat google at their own game. go apple!

    • Dave

I would say it’s success is more due to it aggresively making bussiness deals that no other tech firm would be able to demand and creating hype around its product that causes large sales regardless of product quality.

  • Norm

This irrelevant! DROID stock is at an all time high. It’s killing Apple in fact.

    • Mark

Yeah – DROID eats Apple for breakfast – Why you may ask? It’s because DROID does.

I can’t belive anyone would buy asuch an antiquated phone and OS when they could get DROID….or is it a DROID 2 or is it a DROID X….all with 2.0….I mean 2.1 or maybe upgradable to 2.2 sometime in the future.

      • lolmoney

sorry but you need rom version 5.1 to receive the OTA update and then you can sync it after a hard reset. don’t forget to downgrade before the upgrade or it wont work.

      • WalterSobchak

All 3 of your examples have 2.2. You could have at least said the cliq, and the streak, and the X10.
Also, imagine if the whole android thing comes together when the OS updates slow down,
and the UI gets upgraded to maybe keep from skinning.
        http://www.androidcentral.com/google-snags-palm-webos-guru-matias-duarte
Then what’s instore for Android, If it has done all of this with all the dysfunction?

  • thomas

    Someone uses the stocks app!

    • Joe

at least SOMEONE does….I haven’t looked at mine once and I own Apple stock!

  • Common Cents

While every American reading this should be happy that an American Company is doing so well, we have the Religious Fana– I mean Fanboys concentrating on which OS has the best twitter app. SMH.

  • trooth

I am not an Apple fan in the least. I think jobs a douche, however I am happy to see an American company doing well and I am sure all of their employees are happy to be employed.

I like Android over Apple, but their phones are HTC, Motorolla, and Samsung. Not US companies.

    • ?

making decisions solely off of you not liking someone is pretty lame…

    • Michael S

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) is an American-based, multinational, [6] telecommunications company based in Schaumburg, Illinois.

    • ljp

When did Illinois stop being part of the US?

      • Shanghai Dan

Illinois is still part of the US, but Chicago withdrew in 1955…

  • boo

I wonder what Apple products will be like 50 years in the future. Something makes me think Apple is gonna be a real sloppy company when he’s gone

  • Hockey88

The sloppines has already started and will only get worse.

    • Rob

      Explain?

      • Hockey88

AntennaeGate, GlassGate, ProximitySensorGate for the i”Non”Phone4 alone. Damaged and/or dead screen Macs shipped ealier in the year. Sloppiness or carelessness called it what you want. Also, I am sure the employees at Foxconn are rejoicing at this recent announcement. They are so happy they are just jumping for joy!

  • mobile

seems like the stats say otherwise

  • Joe

I wonder if/when Apple announces a 3/1 or 4/1 stock split to get an even better stock value. I’ll say one thing, I’m damn glad I bought Apple stock back in December 06 before the iPhone was announced. :) It was like 79 bucks at that time if I remember right. I’d say it’s an investment well made.

    • Chuck

I bought 1,000 shares of AAPL in 1998 for $17.00 a share. Sold them a few months later for $27.00 a share and thought I was a financial genius.

  • badchad

At some point, I think they’ll be an Apple backlash.

Their entire marketing scheme is based on making their pretentious user base feeling “unique” and “different” while they grab coffee from starbucks on the way to the modern art museum.

Once Apple is exposed as the “normal” billion dollar corporate juggernaut they’ll stand to lose some of their market.

  • caffesilvia

I heard Apple’s big new announcement is going to be their Dutch iTulips!

  • smooter

Ok Apple lovers or haters….keep in mind “market cap” is not what you are actually worth, but what the “market” THINKS you’re worth!

BIG difference when you compare actual value to to market cap and you talk about the companies referenced above.

Truth is, investors are riding the Apple explosion bandwagon, and rightly so as their focus is to make money. But high (or “hyped” in this case) stock prices compared to long term history data prove only one thing…..it will level out! Meaning the market will “normalize” the share price once the luster wears off, and it will wear off don’t kid yourself!

So if you own 1,000 shares of Crapple (oops, my inner hater coming out…dangit!) be careful how long you hold on to them….be a shame to miss the motherload and spend your time in “coulda’, woulda’, shoulda’” land!

It is a great company, no denying it, but so are Microsoft, IBM, HP, etc. And those companies have a LOT more long term value than Apple can even dream up at the moment. Asset to asset, product to product, comparing Apple to those companies and even suggesting that it is “better” or “more valuable” is just plain ridiculous at best.

I am an Apple hater…but facts are facts

    Just my 2c

    • Shanghai Dan

Exactly. Lower revenue, lower profits, lower profit margin, declining marketshare, doesn’t dominate – or even command a majority – of any of its core markets. Not even a dividend offered, or a significant stock-buyback plan. But it’s market cap is greater than Microsoft, which has higher revenue, profits, profit margin, a steady marketshare, and completely owns its core markets.

      Bubble, through and through!

      • David

Shanghai’d Dan. Bubble, you say? As of closing time today GOOG’s P/E was 23.4 while AAPL’s was 22.76. GOOG stock is up 1% in the last year while AAPL is up almost 60% (MSFT is down about 3%). Go ahead, make some money on this bubble. Short a measly 100 shares of AAPL and make $100 profit every point it drops o brilliant economist. Make my day.

  • Mr. Bill

Shameful that they make a good portion of that by not making their devices within the states.

At least Toyota makes cars in the states now, Apple not so much.Only thing about them, is the shareholders being stateside, an the money pits of users.

They’d rather line their pockets, then help america itself, and to myself, that makes them far from American altogether.

One day, china will say enough, pay equally or f-off, though I doubt apple will change their ways until forced to.
Products, lol, its all about profits for them.
Users are just the milking cow not anything special.

    • mobile

ok shut up…toyota is a japanese company… if they have a company here, good for them but its not an American made brand. And what are you saying about China…im sure about 70% of the shit in your house is made in China, even your undies…when China says enough, it will be the end for more than just apple.

    • Doug

I’m sorry but I seem to have forgotten which PC or smartphone manufacturer still makes their equipment entirely in the US.

      • Hockey88

That is the problem! I say more taxation, and I mean lots more, for products produced offshore. Let us see how quickly we see manufacturing return to the US. But this will never happen because of the larger market potential outside of the US. The US is slowly sinking…

  • Alien

Using 10.4% market share is so last century … and is a pointless number.
