Pre 2 pictured, form slightly changed

General

On the heels of yesterday’s SFR Pre 2 discover, French blog MobiFrance has published several, clear images of the next generation Pre. While the device looks extremely similar to the original, there are some slight form-factor changes that make the device unique from both the original Pre and the Pre Plus. The front of the device now has a thin black bezel running around the devices screen and a matte-black finish is present around both the upper and lower halves of the device. So far, confirmed specifications for the Pre 2 are: webOS 2.0, 1 GHz processor, and 512 MB of RAM. Let us know your thoughts on the slightly-new hardware.

Just because this looks to be the Pre 2 doesn’t mean its the ONLY phone they’re releasing… This might just be for those who actually like the pre’s form factor. Nobody knows if they plan on releasing a 4″ beast or something of the like…

“This might just be for those who actually like the pre’s form factor.”

Nothing wrong with that but IMO HPalm does not have the luxury of doing it RIM style? What I meant by that are about pass/current sales number and we all know what happened then?In fact I’m swallowing a hard one when I say even that god awful Torch are leagues ahead of this?

So if they have to retain it what’s wrong with designing just a bit more beefier substitute that can pack a better/bigger batt + screen?

The Pixi Plus’ form to me deserves internal changes and slight external mods since it’s well under-specced even for the target users.Probably not much but a better touch screen for it would suffice among other things.>current Pixi users fill in the blanks<

HP paid billions for this sort of effort?

Could Palm have wasted anymore space above and below the screen?! C’mon Palm….if you’re going to make it that size at least don’t waste so much space above and below the screen. Put in a bigger screen and make the bezel smaller.

    • serpentor

But the space below the screen is used for the interface, so it serves a purpose.

      • Sam K

Sorry I didn’t know that the space is used for the interface. I’m not a Palm Pre user. But do they need that much space for whatever it’s used for by the interface? Couldn’t it be smaller?

    Slightly new…which means..No thoughts.

  • Spdr-Mn

That’s exactly how the Pre Plus should have looked…oh well…

web os is awesome too bad they put it in such a shitty form that only a child could type on. come on palm, I mean hp, give us a phone we actually like to hold, look at and use!

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

    • kyle

couldn’t have said it any better!

  • Norm

Could be a very interesting DROID, but this OS won’t do and it would have to be on VZW.

    • theking25

i hope that u know that WebOS is wayyy better than android (DROID) IMO

      • Canadian guy

I concur… I currently use a motorola milestone, and I pine for a webOS port for it everyday

  • Kdarling

I can’t wait!! I ONLY BUY PALM PRODUCTS AS THEY ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD!! I should know I am responsible for designing the os, I’ve been doing it for 30 years. Go palm!!!!!

    • USMarine

Really? because I believe you are lying through your teeth since I DO work on the OS

    • PRE_NEEDS2change

if this impresses anyone it would be you because this is a waste of waiting time for me

    • kaliq17

I agree about palm being the best in the world! bb torch stole palms form factor! Plus everybody’s using the card view that HPalm introduced! So just wait patiently for HPalms next groundbreaking innovation! I’m considering this phone, though the form fact is quite a let down! Still gonna wait and see though!

  • badchad

agh. Like I always say, the original “river rock” form factor was the distinguishing feature of the Pre.

WebOS was well liked, the major issues were screen size and the keyboard.

A bigger screen would have allowed a larger KB layout, obviously solving BOTH problems.

Hopefully the screen is bigger than it looks,

    • max

      thats what she said lol

  • PRE_NEEDS2change

this is by far an upset to palm owners this crap would make anyone go ANDROID. the specs are safe the design is safe nothing that WOW’s me about this phone at all. My current Pre is overclocked to 800Mhz, iand installed tethering and the hotspot feature on my phone so im happy but i think once my contract is up IM going Android possibly the Galaxy S Epic because i love my keyboard feature and the hardware is not impressing me at all hopefully this is just a hoax and not the real deal.

    • JustStop

After seeing the Pre 2 prototype with basically the SAME HARDWARE THAT FAILED IT BEFORE, the hard working public should definitely wait to see what competing hardware will be available then. Why oh why would you go to 1 GHz CPU but not increase the battery capacity? Keep in mind that once the Pre 2 is likely to hit, the HTC 7 Pro will also be coming and has a Touch Pro2-ish keyboard and WP7. I’d wait to see how the HTC 7 Pro performs (only 448 MB RAM???? WTF HTC!?!?!?!?) or get something with more RAM (at least 512MB) and better battery capacity than the Pre 2.

  • the

    AZERTY… silly Frenchies.

  • Bill

    Same shitty, chicklet-keys keyboard.

  • Scott

I don’t mind the keyboard. Plus, who cares how good the hardware is if using the phone makes you want to shoot yourself? iOS and Android are great, but way too high of a learning curve and it never becomes intuitive like webOS does.

  • sonisoe

i’ve always wanted to try webOS, so despite its ugly design, i wouldnt mind as long as the build quality is solid and the os is smooth…

    • Austin

hahaa your kidding right? Webos is one of the most polished options out there (UI wise). Now as far as hardware…erm…..I think we all know the answer to that.

  • JDB

I like the pre’s keyboard. it is the only one that I can use only one hand to type on.

    • Judge Smails

      “…so where’s your other hand?”

      “Between two pillows.”

    • HereYeHereYe

Why worry about one hand typing? Unless you are one-handed, were you hoping for a device that soothes your driving-distracting behavior?

  • portorokk

It’s beginning to look like hp wasted their money on purchasing palm. This is what they kept all of us waiting for? Everyone should be furious about this! Calling it the pre 2. They should’ve called it the pre plus plus! All they did was upgrade the software cause it is still the same old design. Didn’t palm learn anything from their mistakes? The reason webos didn’t do good in the smartphone market was because no one liked the pre design. The keyboard was the ultimate deal breaker because no one has hands small enough to type correctly with it! Then the morons don’t put a on screen keyboard either. What a waste of time. I’m going Android. See ya palm & good luck with the suckers who purchase the pre 2 (pre plus plus).

    • PRE_NEEDS2change

I agree enough said Palm had me excited all up until today

  • mark

I really dont think this is the phone we will see when it is introduced..

    • Judge Smails

      You’re looking at it wrong.

  • jon

    is the “azerty” keyboard real?

  • bonesb

The new Pre is the same as the old Pre.

    And Norm’s a fucking bitch.

  • Smackdad

So THAT’s what happens when a Pre and a Pixie have an interracial offspring.

    • JR

      Boy isn’t that true.

Is that what we’ve been waiting for all of this time. Moto and HTC been pumping out awesome designs for their Android phones. And you wonder why Palm failed.

I suspect we’ll see decent hardware from HP designed phones eventually. But it will be too little too late unfortunately.

  • Mr. Miller

    Palm Facepalm!

  • serpentor

If u were the real DB u would know.
