5:25 PM: We’re here and seated waiting for Sony to start the event. The event ambiance is pretty rockin’ — super clean, white sofas, white leather wrapped bar — nuts.

5:28 PM: Almost there, folks.

5:34 PM: Sony Exec is on stage talking about the world’s first HDTV powered by Google TV. Today is the launch of Sony Internet TV. “It puts you in the driver’s seat and let’s you continuously search for content across multiple sources.” Sony internet TV offers a progrssive internet experience with infinite posibilties.

5:35 PM: We’re ver proud to be the pioneers of this new category. Presale for Sony Internet TV products is now available through SonyStyle.com. Today we’re launching two solutions. Sony Internet TV and Sony Internet TV Blu-ray Disc player.

5:36 PM: what’s an Internet TV experience without an intuitive and comfortable remote. Based on the leaked photos and this photo, well, we’ll leave the judgment up to you.

5:38 PM: You never need to boot up the laptop. It’s as easy as browsing from your PC, but it’s on your large screen. Sony introduced cutting edge. Sony delivers the full internet based internet experience directly on your living room. In n effort to grow our television business we will continue to combine our hardware expertise, and now the Android OS to create compelling and attractive TV experiences.

5:39 PM: Mike Abary, SV of Sony’s Home Division is now on TV demoing the product. Here is Sony’s first Internet TV. And, it looks like a TV! “The world’s first TV powered by Google TV. In the history of consumer eleectronics this is a pretty big one, and we’re proud to be a pioneer of this entertainment category. We are creating the new TV revoluton.”

5:42 PM: “Watching regular TV with regular apps is so 2009″

5:42 PM: Time spent watching TV while on the PC is up 10%. Time is right for the new revolution. Hardware info now… four models ranging from 32″-46″ in price from $599-$1,399. Also, if you just bought a new TV, there is a Blu-ray integrated box for $399. We’re incorporating components in CE devices that you wouldn’t normally see. They have to perform to capture the content on the internet. We have an Intel Atom processor as well a 8GB of storage. Mike is talking about the remote now, or what Sony likes to call, “a unique remote.” The design of this remove control is beautiful. It belongs in the living room. See how it feels, it feels natural. We’ve incorporated design elements from other successful remote controllers in the Sony remote portflio.

5:45 PM: Some design elements were borrowed from the PS3. There is a full QWERTY keyboard, and when you’re searching on TV, you need input. There is a mouse function built in, control your DVR and Blu-ray player, single remote for all of the functions that are necessary in the living room.

5:46 PM: Ease of use for the consumer. Software and services: it incorporated the Google TV platform and the Chrome browser. Search is a function of these unique products, and while search is available on other products, not lke this. Search across your DVR, TV, and across the web. The TV is fully personalized b bookmarking your favorites.

5:47 PM: Apps are important. There are some installed out of the box. CNBC, Netflix, Napster, NBA, etc. Other competitors that have closed access to the internet

5:49 PM: They are now walking us through the new product — demo time! He’s showing Food Network and how he’s watching live TV, and he doesn’t want to watch what’s on Food Network. He wants to watch Man Vs. Food, his favorite show. He hits the search button on the remote, types in man v. food, and showing the results.

5:54 PM: Demo is over, he hopped around from live TV to Google Maps, to the browser, and even sent a Tweet.

5:55 PM: The people that care about this product is the same audience that’s already using a PC and TV.

Two things that Google TV is good at; Netflix and Amazon market. Am I right?

    • iknowthingz

Android market coming to Google TV in January.

      • ChocoTaco

great…we really need all 12 useful apps that market has to offer.

      • Tdot34

thats 11 more useful Apps than the Apple Appstore.

I hope this move means the horrible browser in the PS3 will be replaced by ChromeOS in Android.

    • John

      I would hope so.

Firmware upgrade to the PS3 to add Google TV and they’d finally sell enough PS3s to pay off R&D.

No Hulu on it is a deal breaker. Now I am still happy I built the HTPC.

    • superchunk

Hulu is there as with any internet enabled device.

      • superchunk

Quick search shows that Hulu killed the workaround for Android devices but a full app for Hulu will be out by end of year.

      • WalterSobchak

So this has a web browser with flash, but Hulu is blocking it from working in the Browser just like on android phones?
Either way I guess, as long as this has a Flash supported browser, I can find 1000 places to watch the shows I want, Hulu is pretty limited anyways.

  • Spdr-Mn

I didn’t even know this was going to happen…

  • Tdot34

I’d rather just buy a cheapo desktop computer with a Blu-Ray drive and HDMI out video card and plug the TV right in. Oh wait, thats what I already do. Thanks Sony for offering Internet to the mindless masses that couldn’t figure it out.

  • Schwack

However with Comcast killing my TV Tuner in my PC, I could get Sony’s 24″ for my PC monitor and hook it up to my cable box and I could go back watching TV on my PC again…………..

  • Jarrett

Doesn’t Microsoft have a very good court case here? I mean, this is WebTV correct?

So in one week we were given Microsoft Phone ’07 and we were as given a “fresh” take on WebTV. Great, not sure the world would have survived with out the me too’s.

    • WalterSobchak

I think why it could work now
      1. Apps like aBTC Bittorrent client and NetFlix. Use LiveScores to check all the scores while you’re watching the games. Skype HiDef Video calls. NBA and NFL mobile and MLB at Bat to watch out of market games. Slingplayer to jack my friend’s unused Uverse Box because I don’t pay $50/month for all the premium channels. And of course TWITTER!!!!!
      2. Streaming media is now the norm.
      3. Internet and TV consolidated. You can search for a show and find it on your cable box, or on megavideo, sidereel, etc.
      4. It will work beautifully with your Android phone(or in the near future tablet) as a controller/keyboard.
      My 2¢

Hey BG, can’t figure out which one you are in the photo; are you sitting facing the camera or is your back to the camera?

  • PullMyDilbry

    Needing a keyboard is a non-starter.

  • PullMyDilbry

on second thought, if the android ui is clean (not counting on this with google) then phone could be used to do text input…huummm

  • Norm

If only it had a two year contract with Verizon and both a front facing camera as well as rear 8 MP+ then id be in line right now.

  • Andy

    60hz? Really? I don’t need 240, but I was expecting 120…
