Yahoo Messenger 2.0 for iPhone hits App store, brings video calling over 3G

General

While a new update to the Yahoo Messenger app on the iPhone would be eventful in and of itself, the latest version brings a very special gift — video calling over 3G, and not just phone to phone, but phone to computer or vice versa. Unfortunately in our quick tests, video calling seems to be buggy, not reliable, and above all, pretty low in the quality department when we do manage to get it working. In addition to video calls, the newly updated Yahoo Messenger brings free voice calls to other Yahoo Messenger friends, supports background multitasking, and more. Let us know if you’re feeling the new update, though we’ll be waiting for real FaceTime calling over 3G.

‘Facetime over 3G’ will never happen on AT&T.

Not unless you jailbreak your iphone.

    • Carmen

      Yes it will.

At least you can’t argue that my statement is any more or less practical than yours.

I see you finally came out of that ‘dresser’ you stuffed yourself into on Thursday, congrats’!

Even over wifi the quality from pc to phone is garbage. On the other hand it did connect quickly.

As soon as 4G comes on line, then yes, this becomes usable.

I don’t think it has to do much with internet speed. Yahoo and video calling in general has always worked well on my PC in the past, even with only a 512 Kb/s download and 128 Kb upload connection.

Speaking of iPhones, not one mention of the Jailbreak hubub over the weekend? News blackout BGR, or choosing to ignore it because you didn’t break the story?

    • sirpaul

Did you try to JB 4.1 on 3GS by any chance? I managed to brick my phone 3 times before I just settled with 4.1 and no jailbreak :(

      • mwrg

I did get it working. Had to do it from a Windows netbook I had lying around however, as using VMWare from a Mac was no good.

Fring already has video calling altho it has some intermittent latency issues, but overall, usable app with Android, Symbian and iPhone cross platforms.

Works fine over computer and phone, but could use some improvements over video and voice quality. Looking forward for future updates. Using iphone 3gs btw.

    • sirpaul

  • Dionte

    • superchunk

  • MacMan

  • iName

whats going on with AIM and Skype?

  • superchunk

people still use yahoo? I always felt it was by far the worst email/messaging service.

    • sirpaul

All my friends from Europe use yahoo. Very rarely does someone use gmail or hotmail. And if they do, it is their secondary email.

Hmmm odd, everyone I know in Europe uses hotmail and not Yahoo or Gmail.

Gmail is usually reserved for my friends’ “professional” life.

  • Flacofromny

1: Great news now I could talk n see my friends back in my country.
2: yahoo is a great service n love the email don’t see any difference b/w yahoo email n gmail they the same thing. For me I use yahoo as my primary email cus I have an iPhone n offer push for the emails.
3: I have t met not even one person in this world that use Gtalk beside the people from buzz so I dont get why people talk so much shit about yahoo.

    • sirpaul

Because most people in North America are unaware of the huge market share Yahoo! has in the IM and email business in other countries.

I personally don’t use Yahoo! because it is extremely cluttered. Also, Live Messenger ALWAYS offers better video quality than Yahoo!

I’ve been trying to test this, it doesn’t work for me.

  • michael scott

Now if the i*hone would just make ‘calls’ on 3G ….that would be great.
