Samsung Galaxy Tab launching November 14th on Sprint for $399?

Exclusive

One of our Sprint sources just messaged us to let us know that the Sprint version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab is set to launch right around November 14. How about pricing? Well, we’ve also been told the 7-inch tablet will sell for $399 with a 2-year agreement and $599 full retail. That’s all we have for now, but you can be sure we’ll keep digging!

Not bad at all, its time for my other phone upgrade so you can count me in for one. glad Sprint has truly unlimited data, time to be Slingboxin in the garage and Netflixin in the car (whenever the netflix app comes out of course)

There are porn sites out there that run on HTML5, Moshe.

    • Jocko

Word is that this will have a bitchin’ audio with SRS inside. Matches up good with movies.

  • Moshe

I hope RIM has similar prices for their Tablet.

I’m fed up with my iPad without Flash, REALLY, it a HUGE lack.

    • Ben

Then google “iPad jailbreak” and get flash

      • Jarrett

First He/She would actually have to own an iPad. Certainly if they owned an iPad they would have already ran a jailbreak because of His/Her obvious need to have Flash.

      • dz

you can’t be serious? Jailbroken flash is a joke. Doesn’t work

    • Earl

When I first read about the release of the Samsung Galaxy Tab I was rather unmoved as we hear it time and again how tech companies are launching products usually to compete with the Apple equivalents, but now having read up a bit more about the specs and looked at some comparisons like this article on Samsung Galaxy Tab vs the Apple iPad it seems as though Samsung has carved out a nice stake for itself and presented it’s own unique angle and spin on the tablet pc concept with the inclusion of voice and video calling. However, I think the prices for both the Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab are kinda steep and may come in the way of a wider adoption of this type of product.

  • Jarrett

This thing is going to sell a few units. It has too. Android users who HATE Apple are going to buy this to try and give their platform some traction in the Tablet segment. I and Sprint are all for this. Me, because I want my economy to appear to be healing so I can capitalize in the markets. Sprint because they want to collect whatever it is they are going to charge for the data plan.

  • superchunk

Seems ok. However, I still don’t see the point in buying a larger version of your phone/iTouch.

I’ll wait for early next year when:
    1. Android 3.0 / WindowsM7 is out.
    2. 12″ tablets
    3. Standard connections and ability to dock
    4. Multicore processors and modern graphics chips

Basically, giving me a real laptop replacement vs a large phone.

    • Jarrett

Have you tried any of the “Tablets” that are on the market? I don’t mean the on display models. I mean a Tablet that has loads of Applications on it. Applications that allow you to access your desktop/laptop from anywhere? Wouldn’t that be a laptop replacement?

The difference between your idea of what you think you want and the people trying to build what you will soon be using is that they can.

“If I listened to what my customers wanted we would be building faster horses and not cars” Henry Ford.

      • superchunk

        Yes and they suck.

        No usb for standardization.
No video out for connection to larger screens/projectors.
Far weaker hardware as compared to similarly priced laptops.
        etc. etc.

Right now I would rather spend my $500-600 on a laptop that has FAR more usefulness and capabilities than the iPad or any other known tablet.

      • Narg

Either you need a laptop, or you need a tablet. Comparing them gains you nothing.

      • superchunk

        I disagree.

A smartphone is a perfect mobile net-enabled device.

A tablet and laptop are essentially the same thing with different form factors.

If you want a basic app running device with internet capability then why the hell would you want to carry around anything else but your phone?

If you want portable computing for far more than simple applications/internet like what woudl be required for an average student. Then you’ll want a laptop or if powerful enough to support real multitasking with Office/etc and easily connect to standard connections; I’d want the far more portable tablet scenario.

I really don’t see why ANYONE would buy a iPad or other current tablet.

I can understand the iPod touch as its cheap and maybe you can’t afford wireless. But, the iPad/current tablets are simply not worth the $.

      • superchunk

I see no standard usb connection in your list.
I see no standard computer video out connection for a screen/projector in your list.
Hardware is a 1ghz single core processor and a really weak graphics card, so it is far below typical $500-$800 laptops.

So, I don’t see how it has any of the things on my list. The things it does have I can do with my Fascinate phone, so why would I want any tablet.

        My point still stands.

      • Todd

You do realize that you’re pretty much a troll. Four posts on a device that you think has no use.

I’ve got a laptop. I took it when I went to visit my sister early in the year. Other than that, it pretty much sits in the closet. And I’ve looked at netbooks and wondered how anyone could use them.

I like my Nexus One, but it’s too small for many web pages. A 7inch tablet may be the perfect mix of portability and usability.

  • http://contemplatingandroid.blogspot.com DaveM

Whats the big deal about a contract? If you spend the extra money on the iPad 3G then you are going to pay for internet service. Otherwise you would get the wifi version. Are you going to use a different internet provider with the iPad? You can’t.

    • Jarrett

There is also no contract with the iPad’s 3G use (or nonuse). So you would sign a contract for you phone and for your tablet? I could give you a contract for air if you would like to sign that as well.

      • ConceptVBS

The Galaxy Tab will come to At&t and they (At&t) will adopt the same non-contract pre-paid service plan like they give to the iPad.

        So your argument is invalid.

        Advantage Galaxy Tab.

Plus, its on all 4 carriers. Something you cant say for the iPad.

    • Jim

The iPad 3G is unlocked, costs $130 over the WiFi-only version and you can activate and inactivate 3G data when you like. If you only need to use 3G occasionally, this is a huge advantage over paying a(nother) monthly subscription. If you travel internationally, then slipping in a local microSIM is another advantage compared with roaming data fees. I do not want another monthly subscription on top of my cell phone data.

    • kent

You can use another internet provider with the iPad like MiFi or Overdrive.

  • Rider

64 Gb ipad with 3g is about $900. Galaxy Tab + 32Gb sd will be $750 maybe? That’s about $100 too much. I’ll wait for wi-fi only.

    • superchunk

I don’t understand your comment. Are you saying that because the GalaxyTab is cheaper than the iPad, its too much?

      10″ iPad 64GB 3g no camera = $900
      7″ Galaxy 64GB (32internal + 32SD) two cameras ~ $750

To me, for a more portable and far more competent tablet the Galaxy is the best option.

However, I still wouldn’t buy any table device yet as my phone is still the overall better product.

      • Narg

Gees, superchunk is it that hard to understand? Both are too expensive. Personally I think a touch pad should be sub $300 with no strings at all. The hardware is NOT the expensive to produce. Apple’s lead in the market only inflated it far too much. Thank them for sticking it to the public.

      • superchunk

AH so he wasn’t comparing the two he was basically saying what I keep saying that iPad/current tablets just are not worth it. Makes sense now and I fully agree.

      • Todd

So you want Samsung to build a device for $300 or so, sell it to Walmart or Best Buy, they sell it to you for $300 and both the manufacturer and the retailer lose money on the deal?

you must live in a world where you can get a Lamborghini for 10 grand.

  • Speed racer

@jarrett do u really think that many people that hate apple will buy this to spite them? Ur dillusional. Perhaps u and a handful of haters will but come on, most “normal” people buy the best product – Apple or otherwise.

    • Jarrett

      @ Speed racer,

First, welcome to the BGR comments forum.
Second, I agree with you last sentence.
Third, I have a few Apple products.

If my comments about Android seem Pro to the platform it is tongue in cheek. I also from time to time explain my undying love for Microsoft and their continued dominance of everything. (Sarcasm, if the explanation was needed.)

      • Todd

This is the first thing you’ve said that hasn’t been downranked into practical oblivion. (I miss downranking on Engadget. Maybe I need to come here more often.)

  • Scott

I think that price is a little too high. I think if it were $250 on contract and $500-550 with out, then they would see some sales.

The problem is, you’re going to pay $400 just for the device and HAVE to pay some kind of data charge for 2 years. I’ll pass until I can get a WiFi only model!

Oh, and when Samsung doesn’t copy Apple and put 1 proprietary port. Heck, even BB did a better job with ports!

    • lessthantito

If Samsung wants to compete with the iPad then that price needs to come down, flash isn’t really going to sell many people with the inflated price and it’s smaller size. I like the Galaxy S series phones but you might as well just get one of them for what they are gonna be charging

      • Todd

Why would they sell a superior device for a lower price? Two cameras, a media card reader, REAL multitasking. And it’s $30 less than the competing iPad.

  • nyc

So Apple makes a product…and people replicate it.. good business

    • ?

do android people have anything better to do than click negative to non-praising comments to their OS?

      • reason

        guess not…

    • Narg

Apple is very very late to the tablet market. Or have you been under a rock the past 10 years?

      • ?

not the point, still looks like a giant iphone…make it look different…thats the point

      • in the area

yeah, the comment didn’t say they replicated the tablet, they replicated the look… yawn

      • Jarrett

See Newton. This space was battled over before. Sharp, Palm and Apple all were doing “Tablets” before anyone. Despite the fact that it is all due to the DynaBook anyway., Or Alan Kay specifically.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynabook

In case you actually wanted to know. Ten years? That’s funny.

      • kent

You must be a young person to think Apple is late.

    • nyc

So Apple makes a product…and people replicate it.. good business…repeated…

    • Jezz (like jizz but with an ‘e’)

Great comment buddy! :) Good job!

Except for the fact that Apple isn’t even near the pioneer for tablet devices. Oh, nutty bars! That would completely derail your entire comment…whoops! :(

  • Vader317

Great Job Samsung making a gigantic iPhone 3GS. People just realize this: No matter how advanced these tablets are, it’s down to the contents. I played Angry birds on Android, it’s close but still no cigar! The Games and Apps alone for the iPhone and iPad is what sets the products apart.

    • peter

You do know its only a matter of time before developers realize the sheer market size of Android.

Developers go where the money goes.

      • Mgl323

        Apparently it’s Apple app store.

      • Dan

NOOOOOO its not the Apple app store. Android will have more apps than Apple just give it a couple more months. And as for the quality of the app, you have to understand Android is still in the early stages and apps are updated all the time to make them better.

  • george

good thing they left voice out of the US version, otherwise I would have bought it

  • Fastwalking

didn’t google say that froyo is currently not designed for tablet use? why wouldn’t they wait until they have a suitable os for a tablet before going to market?

    http://www.bgr.com/2010/09/10/google-froyo-is-not-optimized-for-use-on-tablets/

    • Jarrett

They don’t want to wait because they feel they need some sort of product out there by the holidays.

Say Apple still has the only Tablet at Christmas. What percentage of Tablet sales will Apple enjoy? 100%, that is correct. So the idea is to at least grab some portion of the tablet market during THE key selling season of the year and then reload the product with the correct version of Android if/when it ships.

You have to be visible or you will never be viable.

    • superchunk

That was due to size and the 7″ size of this Samsung is right at the upper limit of Froyo.

In January when other tablets launch as well as larger Galaxy models, Android 3.0 will be out and even this model will probably get upgraded by then.

      • Jarrett

        @ superchunk,

There seems to be quite a bit of hearsay in your comment. I don’t remember Google ever saying when 3.0 was going to be ready. I also don’t remember Samsung saying that the GalTab (for girls?) was going to see an update. Samsung and update usually don’t go together well.

      • superchunk

3.0 has long been targeted to release by end of this year.
Leaked documents from Verizon as well as Google’s own comments have suggested this. (btw, I spend a lot of time on android forums an in the developer areas as well)

As for this tablet model being upgraded I do believe I said “probably” signifying it as my opinion and assumption.

      • ConceptVBS

        “GalTab (for girls?) ”

Funny you mention that. Just repeat the word “iPad”outloud three times for me.

  • MEC

    $600 for a non-contract tab? what !!! I rather pay $500 for the iPad non-contract

    • MEC

I been holding off on the iPad and waiting to see what Android has to offer but it looks like no real competitor will be around in time for Christmas…. oh well, I guess an iPad it will be.

      • Jarrett

You might hold off on buying that iPad. Certain as the sun will come up tomorrow Apple will be releasing (at least details) of the next iPad come January.

    • superchunk

and get a device that has a larger screen, but has no cameras, SD card slot, and no 3G as the comparable iPad with 3D starts at $630.

    • kevin

Oh, yeah. That makes sense. For the savings of $100 you get to pay for internet coverage as you go, whereas if you pay $600 you are homefree and you have Flash (and Adobe AIR).

Personally, I agree what others have said in this thread – for as much money as what each of these cost, I’d be happier buying a really nice, decked out laptop with Windows 7 and save a bundle, and with more features.

Until they are at this price and would have more memory (2GB+) and dual-core processors at the minimum, which would allow me to do web development and honest work – I really don’t see the fascination with tablets other than the fact that they just look “cool”.

      • kent

        Some people buy both.

      • Scotty

No one can argue with the power of a laptop, but you can’t easily carry it around, it’s still a lap or table top device. A tablet is truly portable. That’s why the netbook is dead. In my place of business ipads are replacing laptops and netbooks. Other brands and OS’s will be considered as they reach the market. Consumers are, and will continue to pay for convenience and the new shiny things dangling before their eyes, practicality aside. BTW, I’m one of those people that like new shiny things!

    • ConceptVBS

$500 iPad is the Wifi only

      $600 Galaxy Tab has 3G + wifi.

Better comparison is the $630 iPad 3G.

Samsung is coming out with a Wifi only version of the Tab so it should be cheaper than $600.

SAMSUNG IS A RACIST ORGANIZATION. WHY ARE THERE NEVER ANY BLACK PEOPLE IN ANY OF THEIR ADS, INCLUDING THE PHOTO SHOWN HERE???. I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM A COMPANY THAT IS TOO GOOD TO FEATURE SOME PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT.

    • You Are an Idiot

Samsung is a Korean company. Not that Koreans can’t be racist, but still. You are an idiot.

      • you’re an idiot too

Koreans r sooooooo racist.. come to new york and get your nails done. I don’t agree with Vincent but your statement is just as idiotic..

      • Blackberry Bold

        You should say some koreans….
If you say koreans are so racist, then obviously you are wrong because you haven’t met all the koreans in the world.

      • noel b

Yea but they obviously do good nails…so dont hate

    • Blackberry Bold

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard..
Just because the company doesn’t use African people in their ads, it doesn’t prove that the company is racist. The people who are really racists are people like you who have nothing to complain about, but accuse other companies and people to torture them.

    • ConceptVBS

Black people using the race card whenever they feel threatened or at a disadvantage. What is so new here?

    • ConceptVBS

      For the record black Vincent,

How about you go to this site (http://www.samsung.com/us/) and click on “watch this”.

You’ll see black people using the Galaxy Tab.

      Happy?
