WSJ gets less cheeky with Verizon iPhone article, now says it's a done deal

General

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal made headlines by writing:

Apple Inc. plans to begin mass producing a new iPhone by the end of 2010 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the smartphone early next year, said people briefed by Apple.

While there is plenty of innuendo in that statement, the publication never actually stated that Verizon will be selling the iPhone. Today, the WSJ has un-muddied the proverbial waters and rewritten a portion of their previous article. The new article reads:

AT&T Inc. is about to lose its lock on the iPhone.

Apple Inc. is making a version of its iPhone that Verizon Wireless will sell early next year, according to people familiar with the matter, ending an exclusive deal with AT&T and sharpening the competition with Google Inc.-based phones.

There you have it. Your iPhone-to-Verizon rumor du jour. Bon appetit!

I hope at&t’s Corporate Legal department is not that stupid to allow some kind of leak like this by Apple! I’m pretty sure of it. I think WSJ is grasping at straws, because everyone wants the iPhone on Verizon.

I still highly doubt it. The iPhone on AT&T has no advertising or AT&T start up screen. The only way someone not familiar with mobile technology would even know this is an AT&T phone would be the letters next to the signal bars. Now I have a feeling Verizon won’t allow that. They are going to plaster their name everywhere throw their vcast crap on there and a bunch of logos of their big red check mark. Its a battle of egos and from history apple likes to control and Verizon does too. So if people think their is some tension with apple and AT&T now, just wait to see how it will be with Verizon and apple. Even though I still doubt it will ever happen. Again – battle of egos.

Do you think Verizon will care about that? They will only care about the new customers who will jump ship from AT&T. No one thought they would loosen the reigns on Android but they did. What makes you think they won’t for iPhone? They would be idiots not to. Bottom line, increase customers and that’s what iPhone on Verizon will do.

I can’t wait to get mine.
