Sprint to announce Samsung Transform, Sanyo Zio, LG Optimus S today at CTIA?

Exclusive

We’ve just been dropped some intel from a new source that we thought we would share. Our source details three new handsets that U.S. wireless carrier Sprint will detail today at CTIA in San Francisco: the Samsung Transform, the Sanyo/Kyocera Zio, and the LG Optimus S.

The Samsung Transform will have a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display (not Super AMOLED), 800 MHz processor, 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera, 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera with LED-flash, EV-DO Rev. A and Android 2.1. We’re told the device will be upgraded to Android 2.2 shortly after launch. The phone is set to launch on 10/10/10 for $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. We saw the user guide for this device leak yesterday, so no real shock here.

The second device is the Sanyo/Kyocera Zio. The Zio sports a 3.5-inch HVGA full-touchscreen display, 600 MHz processor, 3.2 megapixel camera, and Android 2.1. Like the Transform, the Zio will be upgraded to Android 2.2 shortly after launch. The device will retail for $99.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and will be available on 10/10/10.

The third and final phone is the LG Optimus S. The Optimus S will have a 600 MHz processor, 3.2-inch full-touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera, and will ship with Android 2.2. The device, which our source says feels great in the hand, will retail for $49.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate; also e available on 10/31/10.

All three devices will support Sprint’s mobile hotspot feature for up to five devices; the Optimus S will support this at launch, the Zio and Transform will support mobile hotspot creation once upgraded to Android 2.2. We’re also told that all three devices will run the the Sprint ID service we heard a little bit about yesterday.

Anything in this potpourri of devices pique your interest?

I am just glad to see Sprint adding some new merchandise. It always seems like every time I read a new article about new phones its Verizon.

Come on sprint. Are you guys serious? You are basically making a last year batch of phones once again. How is the Samsung transform any better than the moment? And for 150 you can get galaxy s phones on other carriers with super amoled. So instead they give us a intercept/moment clone. Other than Evo or Epic Sprint is looking bad right now.

  • Jeremy

These phones don’t sound like an upgrade. The Hero is 600 MHz and the Moment is 800. Plus, after they scrapped us on a 2.2 upgrade I will not but a phone until the update is released. If it doesn’t come with 2.2 you might be waiting a long time for an upgrade. Just like the Hero, Moment, and Epic.

  • Daniel

    No Hero 2 (legend)? No!!!!!!!!!!!

  • superonyx

Sprints MOTO. Pay us 10 more dollars every month or be forced to use weak outdated phones that other carriers would be too ashamed to offer.

  • navi

seems like they are going with a “Transformer” theme for their next batch of phones.

It seems like these are really stop gap phones for those who would not buy the Hero or Moment. Those two veteran phones seem better than all of these including the Intercept and it’s EvDO rev A. nonsense.

Sprint really needs a keyboard and non-keyboard, non 4G pair of phones that are competitive with offerings like the HTC Aria, the LG Ally, or the Sony XPERIA X10. It seems from these specs like Google is requiring wireless hotspot as a hardware requirement for all devices that are to receive Android 2.2 Froyo.

    • Cecil

These are not low end phones. The LG Ally is a very low end Android phone. It seems Sprint’s new offerings all surpass the specs of the Ally, and definitely surpass the Hero (which I ahve). I’m happy with these new offerings for the most part. I’ll be getting one of these this month (I’ll have to do more research to find out which one). But yes, a phone with the specs along the lines of the Xperia X10 would be great.

    ….huh? I’m awake….I’m awake. What’s going on?

The two major issues left unresolved are:

    1) Do any of these phones have a screen resolution higher than 320×480 ?

    2) Will any of these phones run Flash?

If the answer to both questions is no (as I suspect), then these phones are at best a small incremental improvement over the Moment and Hero.

    • nick

the sanyo zio has a screen revolution of 480 x 800 pixels

      • nick

        resolution

  • hydr0

lets go Sprint! love my epic.. nice to see them continuing to add even more Andoids.. entry level thay me be.. but still good selections non the less.. they all look better outside wise then a dumb mytouch..

  • superonyx

I’m not seeing an improvement over with hero or moment. What makes any of them better? 3mp camera? Processor from the moment? Do any of these phones have even 1 feature that is superior to the moment?

Sprint needs to realize that it ok to compete with the Evo. Look at Verizon. How many phones do they have that are better than this? These are all last year phones.

They won’t sell a Droid quality phone unless they can charge you the 10 fee that adds 240 to the phone over the contract for 4g that no one wants due to battery life.

  • 3 Phones Jugglin

Damn…..Ive waited since the EVO was released to see what a LG android phone would bring….and my reward? 3.2″.

Yay. I shouldve got an EVO.

  • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com pekosROB

Yawn… I actually would like to read something that would make me want to trade in my EVO for… get me excited again Sprint!

    @superonyx

Honestly the one upgrade that the Transform and Zio both have on any of Sprints first round of phones is screen size. Screen size is a big deal for a smartphone. I have a Pre and Vibrant. I love my Pre, with the 1ghz overclock on it it works great. But I consistently go back to my Vibrant because using the web on a 4.0″ display is much better than on a 3.0″ display. At least at 3.5″ they are on par with what the iPhone 3GS is for size and resolution.

But other than that I think this batch of phones sounds just fine being Sprint has the Evo and Epic. The Evo still has specs that keep it at the top of the pack. What is the best Android phone out today in specs? Droid X? Evo? Epic? Those would be my top picks. So sprint is supposed to come out with more high end phones? My wife wants to upgrade her Pre but wants a keyboard and doesn’t like the size of the Epics body due to screen size, and also doesn’t care about 4g so she doesn’t want to pay for it. Transform sounds just about right for her. A friend of mine is going to get data but doesn’t want to spend any more than free on a phone. Well he’s SOL but the Optimistic S and Zio aren’t too expensive. I think they have a good compliment of mid range to low end phones to support their high end now.

  • Mgl323

“Like the Transform, the Zio will be upgraded to Android 2.2 shortly after launch”

Lol I heard the same thing for other Android smartphones. I guess a few months is “shortly after launch”.

  • young hov

People complain and bitch about sprint charging 10$ fee but lets see what they say when verzion charges 20$ extra and u dont live in a state covered with 4g cant wait to see the bitching then..

  • Jamie D

Not sure why people complain about Sprint. You have the same problems with any carrier except you will pay about 30% more per month and get half the plan features. These phones most def have upgraded features and the ones that dont are cheaper options for those who dont want to spend a ton of money on a phone but want the android os.

    • Charles Mann

You only pay $31/month for service? ‘Cause 30% more than that is what it costs for SERO Premium ($40/month for 500 anytime minutes with unlimited data/texting), what it costs for any non-4G phone on Sprint.

  • superonyx

    @deraildoax

I understand your points. But the problem is we are now stuck comparing a brand new android phone to an old outdated iphone. Plus as anyone who has owned both can tell you clock speed between android and iphone isnt the same. Just the nature of ios. Its always been fast.

We dont really know the screen resolutions at this point. But assuming they are the low end android standard then where is the improvement? An extra .3 of an inch? Especially is the Samsung is just an LCD screen instead of Amoled. Comparing the Transform the the Moment shows that we really dont have the Transform looking like a generation upgrade over the Moment. It has a 3mp camera. And it has Samsungs reputation for software that just have problems. Look at Instinct, moment, intercept, epic.

I have and love the EVO. I pay extra of course. And i get what you are saying about the extra screen size since i have 4.3inches.

But this isnt about the EVO or Epic. Its about these phones coming to market already behind he competition. Sure Sprint has the “high end” EVO and Epic. But why charge 250 out of pocket with the prayers of maybe getting 100 back in rebate for a phone that is basically a moment with worse screen technology and no added features? Look at the Moto Droid 2, Tmobile G2, galaxy S phones on all carriers. This is what sprint needs to shoot for.

Hoestly you argument could have been exactly the same when the Intercept was introduced. And look at that mess of a phone.

Point is just because we dont want to spend 10 extra per month for this 4g myth we shouldnt be forced into the phones that are pieced together from the parts bin of last year.

Its not about EVO or EPIC. They are great. Even the value of them vs competition is great. Things change when you are dealing with a Sanyo, lg, or Samsung rehash phone.

    • fred

go to best buy, no mail in rebate to wait for

  • Booga Booga

Is it wrong people to click the negative box on every one’s post here as I did just for the Hell of it?

  • maggiem

It does appear to be that these are not really upgrades to any phones Sprint has had. I tried out the Transform at the store and touchscreen really drags, slow at anything I tried, and screen was not at all impressive. And landscape refused to change at times! I have been waiting for awhile to upgrade my phone (had been looking at the Hero for an upgrade, but was hoping for something a bit better inthe processor department, didn’t happen). Have been a long time Sprint customer and actually thinking about a change. Heard that the Optimus S was actually faster, but no keyboard. I NEED a keyboard. But for $50 maybe give it a try, still undecided.

  • Asiaman

I love my new Transform far better than my old Moment!
The screen may not be Amoled, but now I can see the bright and clear screen in the sun. The screen is colorful and the contrast is great. Touch is better on this phone, much more responsive and sensitive. This phone is better than the Htc Aria. With it’s front and rear camera that work great for very nice shots and video. No complaints at all. If you download a Sprint Id and don’t want the apps to bog down your device, simply delete the apps you don’t want. Use a task manager and startup manager and your phone battery will last longer and the device will run smooth. Stop complaining about a device unless you have owned it for more than a day. Then if you don’t like it, complain all you want. To round things up, this phone is not the Moment or Intercept, it is the Transform, which is awesome!

  • Asiaman

Oh and BTW, the AMOLED SCREENS CAN CAUSE HEADACHES AND DON’T LAST AS LONG AS AN LCD.
Color may be brighter and pop out, but the screens can shadow and suffer from burn in. I know, I had the Moment and I will stick with LCD for now.
