AT&T to release rugged Motorola ES400 for businesses

General

Last week, we told you about wireless-carrier Sprint releasing the rough and rugged Motorola ES400S; an enterprise device certified for MIL-STD 810G, a 4-foot drop, and IP42 sealing specifications. Today, AT&T announced that it too would be offering the ES400 to its business customers. The device, which runs the Windows Embedded Handheld platform, has a 3-inch VGA touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi a/b/g, 1 GB ROM, 256 MB RAM, GPS, and a 1540 mAh battery. Pricing and availability were not specified in AT&T’s press release; Sprint will be selling the device for $499 on-contract.

i don’t think menly men are going to care about touchscreen function, and 500 dollars is alot for a contract phone…good luck

Business users don’t upgrade as often as those who have phones for personal use (one of the reasons Blackberry is suffering). The type of person who would buy this is gonna be expecting to keep it for four or five years, and they won’t mind paying that much for something like this that may actually last that long.

      • ?

with todays technology it won’t last that long, thats why phones don’t cost that much… a four or five year investment should be put towards a television or something worth 500…not a cell phone thats technology will be obsolete in a year.

    Ew, haha.

$500? Business customers? You can get two Blackberry Torches on contract for a lower price (I think). I tend to see this more for construction workers or people that work in similar fields, but not business.

If this had Android and was on Verizon I would totally be all for it. I moonlight 3rd shift at a foundry.

Hey Geniuses: MIL-STD 810G is a MILITARY-GRADE compliance. This device is ruggedized and built to withstand severe elements and shock, much like the Nextel i700 did back in the day. it will be certified for military use, and specific businesses where protection and durability are high priority. The $500 is the price they will pay to have that type of reliability.

This phone is so tough that if the Germans would have had it during the Battle Of The Bulge it might have repelled Patton’s Tanks long enough for them to call in for help and eventually win the war for them.

Then it would have been ACTHUNG Moto instead of Hello Moto

        Right?

        LOL

@Bieber Fever, even if you were saying something logical, your name means I cannot respect u…

$500 is pretty high for a contract phone, but id you really need something built like a tank, then maybe this is it.

One thing I’m wondering about – how rugged can a touchscreen be? I bet that would be the chink in this phone’s armor.

ive had a pre release version of one of these at my job for about a month now. we have been using it with our warehouse software development team, and for running our proprietary software i would say its the best performing phone i have seen in that category. i wouldn’t trade in my iPhone for one but for our enterprise customers they will definitely love it.

This phone is so tough I bet even Roy Halladay would want one.

What the heck is “Windows Embedded Handheld Platform”? Looks like WinMo 6.5 warmed over! Anyone who buys this is getting ripped off.

  • blah

This class of phone has been around for a long time… Used to be built by a company called Symbol, which Moto bought a while back.

Desperately needs an OS upgrade to android, which I’d bet is in the works.

I’m thinking this might be phone carried by The Most Interesting Man In The World.

Or maybe that was the Kin. I forget.

    • Downtown Clown

This phone is so tough it only has two speeds.

      Dial, and kill

  • Downtown Clown

This phone is smart & tough!

If you ask The Rugged Motorola ES400 what time it is, it always says, two seconds til.

After you ask, Two seconds til what? The Rugged Motorola ES400 roundhouse kicks you in the face.

Hey Bieber Fever: Military Grade?? Not!!… Read the spec. This is a 4ft drop to PLYWOOD. Not really rugged, almost all phones can withstand 4ft to plywood. This is pure specmanship to appear rugged.

Alvin B: Windows Embedded Handheld is same as Windows Mobile, Microsoft will launch their roadmap and renaming of systems in November.

Gooch: the barcode scanning is pathetic…your not really going to rely on this non industrial device with lousy barcode scanning to run your warehouse are you???
