Skype now available for all Android devices, Wi-Fi only in U.S.

Software

If you’re an Android using Skype-lover, the day you’ve been waiting for has come. The iron-fisted grip Verizon Wireless previously had on Skype has been relinquished and the popular internet communication application is now available in the Android Market for all devices running 2.1 or higher. With the addition of Android, we are pleased that Skype is now available on three of the most popular mobile platforms today: Android, iOS and Symbian,” said the company’s product manager Mark Douglas. There is however, one catch: “In the US, Skype for Android works over WiFi only.” So sad. What do you think? Is Skype still useful for you if you have to be within range of a Wi-Fi network?

Skype only works on my computer when it’s connected to the internet, so having it work on my Verizon Droid X only on Wi-Fi isn’t that big deal to me. Welcome to Android, Skype!

“In the US, Skype for Android works over WiFi only.”

What’s the point of this then? The point of a mobile application is that you can use it anywhere, right?

My wife and I use the skype app on our itouch devices using wifi in the u.s. and in europe. the app works great.voice quality is excellent. unfortunately no vid.

I have tested the skype app using my itouch and a “mifi” coupled with a 3G modem in Germany (UMTS) and have found it to be adequate.

For me, it belongs in the catagory “killer app”.
