Samsung sells 5 million Galaxy S smartphones

General

Via a press release, Samsung proudly announced that they have sold over 5 million Galaxy S branded handsets since the device’s launch back in June. As Samsung writes: “The GALAXY S has been a phenomenal success in the global smart phone market, recording global sales of over 5 million units including more than 2 million units in the United States and more than 1 million units in Korea.” Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab today in Japan.

      Nah, 5 million isn’t a number..

      Captivate ROCKS!

If anything I would bet the Fascinate outsold all the other Galaxy S’s. With the BOGO offer Verizon pushed on launch day, I bought two, friends I know bought two, family members bought two.

I bought one free from Best Buy.

The Galaxy S I tried at Bell world was sluggish / bloated / and running a old version of Androol.

Hopefully a personal one does better than the demo model.

I love love love my Vibrant. My wife got the myTouch Slide with the T Mobile BOGO offer but ended liking my Vibrant so much she returned the slide and got one too.

Does the GPS actually work on any of these 5 million devices?

      • superchunk

        Mine works perfectly.

Just received the latest SW update on my Epic and my GPS now “finally” snaps to.

I guess like the phone enough to keep it… but I have to say the keyboard is not nearly as well made as my Touch Pro 2′s =-(

I prefer the virtual kb using the swype tech.

it may walk like a duck and quack like a duck, but it still shits touchwiz.

  • Matt

nice now if they can figure out why my captivate turns it self off ill keep it.

  • Eric

So, what they actually said is we sold 2.5 million, since we gave away 2.5 million phones.

They’re called CARRIER subsidies for a reason. Samsung gets the same price for each unit moved.

  • wekebu

Are they counting returns in the units ‘sold’? I kept my Captivate for 27 days, never could get the gps to work for more than a few seconds. (don’t suggest that I needed to do this or that, I tried it all, read xda, android central, even HTC and Sprint sites/forums). Nice screen, but that should have been fixed. Is it fixed yet?

    • Romo

GPS will be fixed soon on Captivate and Vibrant. Fastest phone right now. Rumor that Samsung is running out of Super Amoled. Grab them while you can.

this is nice. Now support the phones please. We did our part.

Simply put, there are too many phones running too many different versions of Android with no sensible upgrade plan, made by too many manufacturers.

The just-released Droid 2 is now being dropped by Verizon in favor of still yet another Android-based phone, maybe with or without Froyo.

Apple does it right with just one phone, in various sizes, once a year. And updates make it better. Sure some of the updates won’t work on the 2G or 3G phones, but who in their right minds would want to keep a phone longer than one year anyway?

AT&T has made it simple for early buyers to upgrade without penalty to the next model. Most of us have done just that. We have the latest and the greatest.

By the time Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile move to LTE, and phones aplenty to choose from, I would hope that Google will untwisted their panties and not Allie every Tom, dick and Harry to make more than one or two models per year. Right now, it seems there is a new Android phone from any number of manufacturers being released each month. I read today that there are two, if not three, new Android phones being released soon.

By Christmas, there will be another 10 or so Android phones released.

But remember, it’s not Google, Samsung, Motorola, or HTC that have stellar service and many problems do and will continue to occur–GPS being just one–and service/technical support is poor at best.

On the other hand, Apple’s support is number ONE and has been fir over a decade. apple makes mistakes, but the do get fixes out ASAP.

So, you manufacturers and Google, start slowing down the release of phones, concentrate on keeping each phone viable and completely upgradeable for two years at a minimum and give the buyers the support they need. Verizon–teach your CS personnel to be helpful and to be less rude.

AT&T, for all the slamming they have received over the past year, is doing it right. They are building an infrastructure which will be far more robust when LTE comes to phones. And Veruzon will be the weaker of the two carriers. Mark my words. And their CS is far better than Verizon–almost on line with Apple. And, that’s dating a lot.

They should’ve name this the iGalaxy i-S phone…hehehe.
