Verizon launches rough and rugged CASIO G'zOne Ravine

General

The CASIO G’zOne Ravine may not be the ideal handset for most, but arguably, everyone knows someone who could benefit from owning a device like this. You know the person we’re talking about. That person who is always emailing you, or sending you Facebook messages, because they’ve dropped their phone in a puddle, pond, or pudding. Yeah, that person. Today, Verizon Wireless announced the CASIO G’zOne Ravine handset, a rough and rugged flip phone that is built to withstand water, dust, shock, vibration, humidity, altitude, salt fog, solar radiation, and high and low temperatures. The device, which carries the MIL-STD-810G certification, also packs a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash and a noise-canceling microphone. The Ravine comes with several “lifestyle features”; in-case that clumsy friend you know also happens to also love granola, the outdoors, and Subarus. The lifestyle features include a compass, walking counter, thermometer, tides, sunrise and sunset times, astro calendar, and star gazer. Groovy man. The hippie-compliant device will retail for $149.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and new 2-year agreement.

Just get a smart phone with an Otter Box. Who cares about rugged dumb phones anymore?

    • Ion

Not everyone needs a data plan, so until they modify the pricing or make it optional, feature phone is all I need.

Translation: I use my cell phone just for phone calls.

      • Donny

Cool man, you make calls, you are so cool that you can rise above technology and just get the job done. With that said, WTF are you doing here on a smartphone blog?

      • Joey

        Woah, easy there.

      • skyy_flyer

Let me get this straight Donny… this is a “dumb phone post” on a “smartphone” blog? Ion is right, not everyone does need a smartphone. Also, BGR covers more than just cell phone tech updates. So maybe Ion is interested in another part of technology such as computers or such and visits BGR to see such articles? And BGR happened to post a article about a dumbphone that interested Ion? I don’t his intent was to sound “cool” or anything, just merely stated his use of a cell phone is for a phone.

        Donny,

It’s a shame that your phone is smarter than you !

      • GoogleGuy

Donny where do you see BGR is strictly a smartphone blog? I don’t see that under the “About ” page. Maybe you know something we don’t? If that’s the case, what’s this dumbass Donny doing on a smartphone blog?

      • Mr.Bill

I hear Apple makes a fancy feature phone.

  • brianw

Umm.. people who use their phone to talk on, and not carry a data plan. Obviously there is a market for this phone or it wouldn’t exist. Carry on.

  • MacMan

Before android this would be a hit on verizon.

  • brianw

MacMan, what’s your hardon with android about? And fyi, phones like this have been around long before android arrived on vzw.

    • Norm

-1 for your poor reading comprehension

  • Rick the drywall guy

    I want this.

  • Ya around

I have a friend who has purchased everyone iteration of this phone because he pees himself after he drinks haha we call it the piss phone

    • kanef

My friends who piss themselves after a night out have usually lost their phone earlier that night or are perpetually in between lost phones. That said, I have a droid and this still piqued my interest.

  • Justin

(awkward silence)…Is that a bird out there?

  • So Official

I would never use this, despite it being on the nation’s most reliable network. Imagine being at a social gathering and whipping out this phone…. So unofficial.

    • Dale

      So Official,

Out there in the real world, ( you know the one outside of social gatherings ), nobody cares about the phone that you use.

    • John Boehner’s Sun Tan

Because saying you have a snapdragon processor is going to get you laid?

      • Shanghai Dan

Actually, saying you have a snapdragon processor will probably guarantee you will NOT get laid…

  • Mrwirez

    pass

  • Dale

This phone is really for the recreational outdoors and non-deskjob, man-cave dwelling person who needs to have a phone that can stand up to rain, snow, freshwater & saltwater fog, humidity, being dropped and bumped, etc.

    It’s not for fashionistas…

    • Dale

” This phone is really for the recreational outdoors and non-deskjob, man-cave dwelling person who needs to have a phone that can stand up to rain, snow, freshwater & saltwater fog, humidity, being dropped and bumped, etc. ” should have read ” non – mancave dwelling person “.

      • So Official

No a snapdragon processor would make me look like a nerd. Being bbm friends with some bits would get me laid though.

  • drew dogg

This would go perfect with my Casio g-shock watch…

  • patrick

And what is wrong with G-shock watches. Some of us lead physically demanding jobs and need a watch that can take a hit or twenty. I don’t care what case you put on your phone it will not be as sturdy as this phone or a G-shock. Be honest. If if a smartphone producer could they would. But they can’t or don’t so we are left with ugly cases.

  • vdefender

It’s times like these when I wish Verizon had sim cards, so I could switch between a Rugged phone, and my android, depending on whether I was going wakeboarding (take the casio), or just around town (take the android).

    • koolshaggy

All you would have to do is purchase this phone, and when you want to switch from your Droid to the Gz’One is dial *228 send, option 1, put in your phone number, and it automatically does the ESN change for you. Just as easy as taking out the SIM card and switching it between devices.

  • Neo

    It runs android.

  • http://www.hot.com.au/ Luis Garcia

It’s not the prettiest thing, but I bet you can find buyers in the active crowd. I wouldn’t mind having something like this for when I hit the beach so I can leave my smart phone somewhere safe and dry.

  • chris

Seriously, these types of phones haven’t been cool since the boost chirping days. Unfortunately for you guys that are still using a VCR to tape Dancing with the Stars , they never will be again. I mean come on, you’d rather pay hundreds for this drop proof calculator instead of for the Droid x, HTC evo, or iPhone 4? If so, you are seriously outdated, and you need to get with the times! Losers never win because winners never lose. You know why? Because my evo said so,lol.

I’ve been waiting for this phone to replace my Boulder; would have got the Rock, but the microphone is in a weird place.

  • moosc

Ok so this replaces the boulder? Aka a new model? I’m still rocking the first gzone don’t feel like paying extra for data. I pay enough with my aircard and droidX. I really like the keyboard one but it requires the data package and is way over priced. Which think is retarded. Isn’t funny how a dumb phone and smart phone can cost the same amount. They only separate issues is folks don’t want to pay 30$ for data.

  • http://bgr.com danny 5

This phone also has adobe flash. Just thought I would fill in that small detail. First!!! Jk LOL

  • doofusgumby

These types of phones are perfect for delivery fleets, construction workers, etc. I’m about to replace 89 lines of nextel with these and/or the moto barrage (and a couple blackberry bolds for the managers) all with vzw ptt.

dumb drivers and installers don’t need smart phones, natch.

the deal killer on the casio will be if the side buttons are active when it’s closed. if they are, it’s moto barrages (which have better battery life anyway, if a smaller screen, and less lifestyle features, which delivery drivers don’t need anyway).

  • Tommy

Hey folks, what’s with all the “hating” on this phone…? I think it looks pretty damned handsome, if you ask me. And i’m actually due, for a new device upgrade on my Verizon plan. And i’ll tell you, going from my former Motorolla W385 to this one, i can’t wait to pick it up this weekend. Only possible “issue”, that i would have with this phone, is it’s battery life. Since i’ve only owned; LG’s, Samsung’s & Motorolla’s. Hopefully, with all the “features” it comes with, the battery will be just as rugged.
