Microsoft and AT&T have October 11 Windows Phone 7 event planned

General

Here’s an interesting development, it looks like AT&T and Microsoft will be holding a Windows Phone 7 event on October 11. Despite Microsoft’s own website billing the “Worldwide Launch Event” for 3:00 PM on October 11 with T-Mobile in tow, we’ve just been sent an invitation to a 9:30 AM October 11th event; complete with appearances by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega. Looks like AT&T may be the exclusive launch partner for Windows Phone 7 after all… even if it is only for a few hours.

    Why AT&T?!

    • http://www.twitter.com/mattstkc MattSTKC

So they can say they directly went after the iPhone and to see how much real marketshare they can steal from Apple

    • Jake One

My other theory is the public-eye ‘rub’ it’ll get.

Think about it… for 3 years everyone knows At&t is the “iphone carrier’. Now, that carrier becomes the ‘exclusive’ carrier of the all-new WP7 device? For the common consumer, that sounds like a big deal. This is how the average person thinks.

      • michael0360

Or maybe AT&T has big bucks and dont mind payin when they see a shiny new toy that a consumer wud go outta of their way for, they want to make it so,if u wann play with it, u gotta play with them…..

    • Kuoh

GSM is used by most of the world outside the US. The largest GSM based carrier in the US is AT&T. It makes sense that MS would work with AT&T to sell their phones. That’s the reason iPhones went with AT&T as well.

  • mstarman

That exclusivity will still last longer than the Kin. Question is will WP7 last longer than the lame IP suit against Motorola?

  • Ryan

Because AT&T always gets the best phones. Like Dell Streak, BB Bold and Iphone. All launched at start on AT&T. Gotta love it!!! AT&T is “The One”.

    • techjunkieforlife

From everything I have seen, the HD7 over on T-Mobile will be the best WM7 phone this year.

    • jude

      at&t is #2…

      • Allen Walker

Lol number 2 to some people but not everyone. Especially the people who got ripped off hundreds and thousands of dollars by verizon in false data charges.

    • MicroNix

AT&T is number one in only one thing…the crappiest cell network.

  • KathyL

The complete lack of any interest in Windows Phone 7 is really shocking. It’s like people aren’t even bothering to make fun of the platform any more and have mentally marked it off as dead on arrival and not worth the effort of bothering to mock it.

Most Microsoft product launches they pay marketing companies to have pathetic people sitting around in rooms pretending to be ‘excited’ consumers with silly “I’m an Android user, but by golly I’m switching to WM7!” type posts.

It’s just this BLOG… the commenters on here are at the lower end of the spectrum… that’s why I only come once in a blue… Do yourself a favor. Hit Engadget and Gizmodo…better yet, it Pocketnow for more indepth WP7 coverage.

    • PAPINYC

Madame, I take great offense to your comment as, I spent the better part of my morning revising the Microsoft / T-Mobile Event Launch invite. Now, granted, I could have done something a bit more constructive with my time, like play in traffic or stand on the northeast corner of W42nd Street and Broadway and wait for ESPN Zone to re-open, but, I truly thought that the next Windows Mobile phone deserved the attention. Here is the revised invite:

      Sincerely,
      Hemang Patel

Windows Phone Solutions Strategist (please attend, my job is in jeopardy)

      Microsoft Corporation

      • Gabor

@PAPINYC: While your attempt at being funny may be appreciated by some, it is not cool that you are using the name of an actual Microsoft employee who is just doing his job. I know Hemang personally, and he never wrote this. I think you should revise your posting and remove his name, or post an apology. What you are doing is called defamation, actually.

      • Jake One

Actually, its just not funny period.

I mean, I don’t care if this was a posting by Apple, Google, or friggin Chef Boyardee, it was just plain dumb and the moron posted it twice like a complete gay jackass who laughs at his own jokes.

        No, no appreciation here.

      • Mr.Bill

He goes on to copy an paste this further in non WP7 threads as well.

      • Gabor

@Jake: I agree with you. Under ‘some’ I meant people like Tony. Every moron has their fans, it seems.

      • TONY

@Gabor, you sir, are a moron. You do not know anyone, so stop your bullshit claims that you do. What you are doing is called lying, actually.

PAP is right. This phone has shown nothing that it actually works! People are making a big deal out of a phone that could of been useful in 2004.

      • Gabor

@ Tony: This is a public forum, so I will refrain from any name-calling, even though I have my opinions about you. You called me a moron and a liar, and yet you know nothing about me. All I will say is that you are severely misguided in your accusations. As it happens, I am a friend of Hemang’s. The editors can verify who I am, because I logged in with my real name and my real email address, and they can see it. I don’t care if you don’t believe me. You are letting your own vitriolic hatred and and grandstanding cloud your common sense. You will notice that I have not stated publicly what I think about the phone, because then you would say I am biased. I am merely standing up for Hemang Patel, who is a fine gentleman, and doing his job. It bothers me that his email is being misrepresented in a crude attempt at humor and defamation. Now if you think that there is nothing wrong with the posting by PAPINYC then I have nothing further to say to you. You can either crawl back to the hole you crawled out of, or continue to spread your poison. Or you might be PAPINYC who logged in under a different alias. I don’t care.

    • bob

“they pay marketing companies to have pathetic people”…..
well they’re giving a free phone to every microsoft employee and they’re all over on engadget pretending they’re real people that think it’s gonna be really cool…

    • Jake One

      @Kathy
You judge a company/product/device by how much it gets made fun of by the same day-in and day-out trolls on the same blogs?

You know, the air outside is getting cooler… you might want to go venture out there now and again

    • treydiz

They have people crawling over this forum…take a look around.

  • Ricotibiri

windows 7 better be fuckin sweet as fuck

    • Mgl323

      What about sweet and sour?

  • treydiz

It makes sense that one failboat should team up with another.

  • namelesstwo

If it turns out to be true that AT&T will have the exclusivity on WM7, then that’s an indication they are already preparing for the end of the iPhone exclusivity.

They are probably testing the waters in advance to see what will prevent their customers from flying out somewhere else.

Maybe they’ll get lucky and WM7 will surprise everyone by turning out to be a great OS and become very popular, but don’t hold your breatn.

    • PAPINYC

I think we’ll have better chances of finding life on Mars!

      • bob

        :)

    • http://www.twitter.com/mattstkc MattSTKC

if WM7 is anything like Windows 7, the iPhone better go multi-carrier and fast to keep it’s marketshare.

    • DubYa

Same thing was said about the Torch.

  • 5tod

    @ nameless… No idiot , it’s because verizon didn’t want the crappy wp7.

    • MicroNix

yeah, after all they are still trying to get rid of the Kin inventory….

  • http://www.apple.com Steve jobs

ha ha ha. they will never catch up with
me. I am the best! good luck Stevie !
lots of laughs about you. let someone
with ideas take over. better yet u stay
    better for me!

  • http://www.apple.com Steve jobs

    we can’t be beat!

  • namelesstwo

    @ 5tod says… “No idiot, it’s because verizon didn’t want the crappy wp7″

Ahh…the pleasure of internet anonymity, when you can call peeps you don’t know from Adam, and neither do they, “idiot.”

I wonder if you’d have the guts to call someone face to face “idiot” if the guy was 6’6″ 260 lbs of solid muscle, a martial arts expert with a short temper, who owns an extensive weapon colletion.

    I don’t think so.

Isn’t the internet a blessing for people like you?

    I think so.

    • 6Tod

      @ namelesstwo… It’s spelled “collection”, idiot!

    • MicroNix

      As well as yourself…

  • msawi11

as an at&t marketing employee, I am excited for WM7 launch. In particular the Samsung version with large super AMOLED screen and quite thin form factor is DA BOMB! as for the platform…The email experience ROCKS! The customizable home screen SHOCKS & AWES! you better recognize!

  • badchad

If they come with something for Sprint I’ll WM7 a shot. Why not?

the iphone looks good, but it’s had the exact same UI for the past 4 years.

RIM never even had an interesting UI to begin with.

    Palm crashed and burned.

And while I like my Android device, I’ve had it for a year. I’m somewhat bored with it.

Say what you will, WM7 is brand-spankin new. It’s been quite some time since a completely revamped mobile OS has been released.

    • MicroNix

Actually, its really taking a chance on anything 1.0 with Microsoft. Look at Vista. Complete revamp from “the ground up” from XP. Crashed and burned. Windows 7 is only Vista with UI and perf enhancements after they cleaned up the slop and is what Vista should have been (and not charged us for this “upgrade”). They’ve been under enormous pressure to put *something* out in the mobile space and while they took their good sweet time with this, they also did with Vista if everyone remembers correctly. I’ll believe this to be killer when I see it.

  • treydiz

I like *most* of the info that BGR provides, but this thread, like many others is simply crawling with industry stooges.

Ergo, I rank the value of responses by how many dislikes they have received!

  • BL

I refuse to have a phone with anything crapbox 360 outdated garbage or zune related on it. I want a 4.5 inch screen android 2.2 AT&T come on already!

  • Chellykay88

I haven’t had a winMo phone since 2008 but I really liked it back then. Maybe WP7 will be the winMo comeback… You never know.

  • Mr.Bill

+1 “You might as well hire that jackass Jarret”

If they do, this will be a ghost town.
