Second generation AppleTV jailbroken with SHAtter exploit

General

If you picked yourself up a second generation AppleTV, or plan to, it looks like you’ll be able to get your jailbreak on; assuming you’re into that sort of thing. Dev-team member MuscleNerd has posted a one-minute YouTube video showing Apple’s little black-box running a jailbroken firmware. Complimenting that, the dev-team has also managed to decrypt the AppleTV’s encryption keys. Hit the jump to see the video and hit the read link to check out the keys.

What do I gain if I do this?

Hopefully widgets because if you don’t have widgets you are not DROID and therefore suck balls.

I love it…this must really piss ol’ Stevie off

    • Eric

I wonder if it really pisses him off. I don’t think so too much. If it does good, he can see what the jailbreak community offers and offer us a choice in competition. It’s what drive the free market…or what’s left of the free market.

I don’t think jailbreaking pisses Steve Jobs off. If it wasn’t for jailbreaking, he’d probably lose a lot of customers.

I don’t know. That patent application that has appears aimed at freezing out jailbreakers has me a nit nervous.

I really am considering the Logitech Revue for one room and the Apple TV for another. Hopefully I can put slingplayer on both of them so my wife can watch her slingbox we have in Japan.

@Iconic, on the contrary at this point, its good for Apple since it increases the ATV bazz. Especially when the video capabilities of AirPlay wont be available till Nov when iOS 4.2 comes out.

Also, it helps to further showcase the potential of the product until Apple will be ready with an AppStore. Remember that with the 1st gen iPhone Cydia came months before the AppStore with a store for 3rd party apps. I wouldn’t be surprised to soon see Cydia on the ATV.

This is great even for Apple.

Oddly this is very correct. I have absolutely no use for ATV but jailbroken ill watch for what this opens up from a distance. Who knows, they might just get that Benjamin from me for the little box as a low cost Christmas gift my girls! Better this than a sweater lol!

  • Androidian

I agree with Joeyy. This is good for Apple because by jailbreaking, their products becoming more appealing to a larger group of consumers. Like the iPhone, jailbreaking opened the phone to other US carriers without it being officially offered through Apple. Therefore more ppl want(ed) the iPhone.

This is why Apple needs all the ATV attention it can get in the coming few months, especially with early adopters.

JB for an Apple iOS product gets attention. Just look at the coverage that this story will get.

FIRST STEP TO A XBMC PORT BABY!

    • cjust

What’s the point of having to work this hard to use XBMC on it?

  • Steve

We still don’t know what added feature you can get from jailbreaking? Why would you do it?

  • 1000Monkeys

What can you get from Jailbreaking an Apple TV?

    Primarily iOS apps!

Apple TV will be able to stream from a lot more internet sources like Hulu+, BBC AMerica, TV.com MLB.com, Pandora, Grooveshark etc. which will make it competitive with Roku and Boxee in terms of streaming sources and options both audio and video.

Then there’s gaming which, while limited to people who have iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches (for remote touch screen control) there’s a wealth of games, while casual, makes it attractive to the Wii audience.

  • God

What’s the point of jailbreaking a tv? Free porn? Watch channels it doesn’t offer? idk…

    • 1000Monkeys

      ‘God’

Did you read the post right above yours? For the other media apps to not be locked into paid streaming only (and open up to other paid streaming sources like Hulu+, Amazon, Blockbuster online, MLB, NBA, TV.com etc as well as audio/music streaming services).

Also, it runs iOS so it can potentially run the same apps as the iPhone/iPod Touch and the iPad, which makes the Apple TV very useful and multipurpose. The main issue is a control interface using an another iOS device or maybe even other smart phones/tablets.

So, jailbreaking opens up new possibilities/programming sources for the ATV? That’s wonderful. (I’d like to be able to use my (UK) VPN and access British television through the BBC iPlayer), but how would one control such programming? Would you have to keep a Mac/PC notebook at hand to enter keyboard commands? Would there be “apps” for such control ability?
