U.S. Cellular details 'Belief Project'

General

U.S. Cellular has had a teaser-site for their “Belief Project” up for just over a week, but now, the company is starting to detail just what the program entails. “We noticed wireless customers shared some common frustrations, and we wanted to fix them,” said Mary N. Dillon, the company’s president and CEO. Starting tomorrow, U.S. Cellular will begin offering “One and Done” contracts, which allow customers who have completed a two-year contract to move to a month-by-month post-paid offering. “Belief Rewards,” which — from what we gather — will work like credit card points; the longer you are a customer the more points you earn. Points can be used towards early phone upgrades, additional lines, ringtones, etc. Other features of the Belief Project include: $100 phone replacements for lost and stolen phones, overage cap warnings, and 5% bill discounts for auto-pay. Sounds pretty nice, although, we’re interested to see the fine print. Hit the jump to check out the brief synopsis the company just sent us.

U.S. CELLULAR LAUNCHES INDUSTRY-FIRST PROGRAMS THAT ELEVATE THE WIRELESS CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE, REWARD LOYALTY

The Belief ProjectSM Offers “One and Done” Contracts, Rewards Program

To Get Earlier Phone Upgrades, Overage Caps

CHICAGO – [September 30, 2010] – Today, United States Cellular Corporation [NYSE: USM] took its strategy of delighting customers with innovative services to a whole new level with its launch of The Belief Project. The carrier announced an array of industry-first initiatives designed to give potential customers several compelling reasons to switch to U.S. Cellular and reward loyal customers.

The company will offer wireless customers the benefits they want including “One and Done” contracts, a robust rewards program with points that never expire for active accounts, simplified national rate plans, protection against “bill shock” with overage protection, caps and forgiveness; the industry’s only phone replacement program, and savings of up to 5 percent on their monthly bills for setting up auto pay and paperless billing.

“We noticed wireless customers shared some common frustrations, and we wanted to fix them,” said Mary N. Dillon, president and CEO of U.S. Cellular. “With The Belief Project, we’re elevating the customer experience by emphasizing a human relationship with our customers, not a contractual one. We believe our customers will stay with us because they want to, not because they have to, and that potential customers will want to be a part of something better.”

In a recent Weinstein and Associates survey, 1,000 wireless consumers revealed strong feelings about some of their biggest frustrations.

- 90 percent said wireless providers should earn their loyalty, not require it by having to sign a contract.
- 87 percent said they shouldn’t have to sign a service contract just to stay with their current wireless carrier.
- 84 percent said 24 months is too long to wait to get a good deal on a new cell phone.
- 80 percent said wireless providers should do something about overages and the big bills that come from them.
Dillon added that enhancing U.S. Cellular’s customer-centric strategy will further solidify the carrier’s reputation as a company that cares.

“Wireless customers deserve something better,” Dillon said. “And they’re getting it from       U.S. Cellular – especially with the new offerings we announced today. But as excited as we are about The Belief Project, this is not the final chapter. We’ll continue to innovate and find new ways to upgrade the customer experience by demonstrating to both current and potential customers that U.S. Cellular puts their needs first.”

No Contract After the First One
With new “One and Done” contracts, new customers who fulfill an initial two-year commitment with U.S. Cellular never have to sign a contract again. Existing customers can simply finish the remainder of their current contract on one of the company’s National Single Line or Family Belief Plans without extending it. After that, customers are free to enjoy benefits without signing a new contract – like a new phone at promotional prices every 18 months that can be accelerated with points. Customers who have previously completed a two-year commitment and are currently on a month-to-month plan can easily switch to a Belief Plan without signing a new contract.

Belief Rewards
Loyal customers often feel new customers get the best deals. At U.S. Cellular, all postpaid customers on Belief Plans can earn points simply for being a customer. The Belief Points can be redeemed for things customers actually want, like earlier phone upgrades at promotional prices, additional lines, phones, accessories, ringtones and forgiveness of overage charges. Customers are automatically enrolled and start receiving points when they sign up for any U.S. Cellular Belief Plan. Belief Points are earned based on a customer’s monthly service plan, the number of lines on the account and how long they’ve been a customer. There are no membership or enrollment fees, or blackout or expiration dates for active accounts, and points are easy to redeem in stores, online or by calling customer service.

Belief Plans
U.S. Cellular’s new simplified National Single Line and Family Belief Plans are designed to be easy and affordable for a wide range of customers. Whether customers use their phones a little or a lot, the Basic, Unlimited Basic, Essential, Essential Plus, Premium and Premium Plus plans offer simple bundles of voice, text and data with built-in value. Select plans include U.S. Cellular’s industry-leading Overage Cap and Phone Replacement programs. In addition, postpaid customers automatically receive Belief Points with all Belief Plans.

Phone Replacement
Phone Replacement allows customers on Premium or Premium Plus Belief Plans to get a replacement phone if something goes wrong with their handset. Customers who bring in their accidentally broken or malfunctioning phone can get a replacement of the same or a similar model – even if the phone is no longer under warranty. And, if a customer’s phone is lost or stolen, they can receive the same or similar replacement phone for $100 – far less than the typical cost of a phone. Phone Replacement is available at U.S. Cellular retail locations and through customer service. If a replacement phone isn’t available in store, it will be shipped to the customer to arrive the next business day.

Overage Cap, Forgiveness and Protection
With Overage Cap, U.S. Cellular customers don’t need to worry about excessive overage charges. The service prevents voice overage charges from exceeding $50 for a National Single Line Belief Plan or $150 for a Family Belief Plan, and customers have the option to use points for overage forgiveness to eliminate overage charges. U.S. Cellular also has its customers’ backs with Overage Protection, which sends customers a text message when they reach 75 percent of their allotted minutes or text messages, and again at 100 percent, so there isn’t a surprise when the bill arrives.

Earlier Phone Upgrades
For years, one of the most common frustrations for wireless customers has been waiting two years to upgrade to the latest handsets, like U.S. Cellular’s Android-powered devices. The standard phone upgrade time under a Belief Plan is only 18 months. U.S. Cellular customers can upgrade a phone as early as every 10 to11 months depending on their plan by redeeming their Belief Points.

Save Up To 5 Percent Using Auto Pay and Paperless Billing
U.S. Cellular is the first wireless carrier to offer monthly service discounts to customers who use both paperless billing and auto pay. Customers who sign up for both with a debit or credit card get a 3 percent discount on their monthly bill. Customers who sign up for both and use their checking or savings account will receive a 5 percent discount.

Even More to Believe In
The Belief Project complements U.S. Cellular’s other free, innovative offerings like Battery Swap, My Contacts Backup and Free Incoming Calls, Texts and Pix.

Starting Oct. 1, you can visit uscellular.com for more information about The Belief Project.

Not only will the Belief plans be more expensive, but you only get the phone replacement on high end plans. Make sure you read the fine print.

Out to sabotage? You must have a mean grudge against them – time to let it go

      • Andrew

Yea no kidding. I’m not a big fan of some carriers I have worked for too but thats alright. Anyways..

Other people are correct, we have a nationwide 3G roaming agreement in non-USCC markets. So STL is a USCC market and does not have EVDO with USCC. So they are behind a bit. However with that said, I picked up better 3G coverage in Arizona with my Desire than other people did with VZW and Sprint. So it does work, and it works well nationwide.

Comparing plans a bit USCC is dead on.

Lets look at some price plans for VZW vs USCC

        VZW
Nationwide 1400 minutes, unlimited messaging with 2 smartphones = $180.00
        3 phones = $220
        4 phones = $260
        5 phones = $300

        USCC
Nationwide 1500 minutes, unlimted messaging with 2 smartphones = $140
        3 phones =$180
        4 phones =$220
        5 phones =$260

So VZW is beat by 40 dollars straight away. Plus you don’t the ability to add a 6th line. You are forced to sign another contract with a nasty ETF. No reward points, no battery swap, no 7 PM nights and weekends. Finally all the lines can upgrade at least at 18 months.

Wait what about unlimited everything? Ok lets do that.

        VZW
        2 phones = $210
        3 phones = $290
        4 phones = $360
        5 phones = $450

        USCC
        2 phones = $180
        3 phones = $230
        4 phones = $280
        5 phones = $330

Again, as mentioned before, the high tier phones even include phone replacement. So might as well tack on another 30 dollars to the VZW plans. $480 vs $330. That’s huge.

Tell me again why having a little red check mark on your phone is better? You pay more and get less. I’m hoping they don’t change their plans or get smart and become competitive again.

Yes VZW, you may buy your competition. Maybe one day you will buy USCC, who knows, its the American way. In the meantime, I am going to cherry pick your customers night and day.

      • Jo

That is currently, that is not going to be the case when, belief project drops. USC has way less customers than the big four so they are going to have to raise their prices to get more out of their cust. Trust me it not about the lowest prices its about “Value”…lol. Not to mention you need to live in one of their 26 markets to even be a subscriber.

      • Andrew

I totally agree. We do a great job in the markets we are in but lack having more markets. I wish more people could experience USCC. That doesn’t mean we don’t lack the ability to give our customers a great experience. Where I live, VZW roams off of our network all around us. So does Sprint. So its foolish to not have us, especially now.

I also understand most of the people that come to this site are not in our markets.

But I am curious about your definition of value. If you are in a USCC market, you get loads more options, similar phone choices and competitive rate plans, what value does VZW have over USCC?

In regards to your money statement, obviously I do not control what price plans are. But if I was a customer, I would take advantage of what a carrier is offering even if it means they will go “bankrupt”. Would you not go buy a brand new car from car lot A if it was $5,000 dollars less than the other guy selling the same brand new car at car lot B? I will gladly leave the number crunching to the exec’s in Chicago.

      • Kris

I’m with you! I’ve been cherry picking ‘em since day one! Especially since Oct. 1st! It’s been a sweet sweet thing to watch and do.. I’m with USCC 100% and it would be nice to have more markets for those who are not in any of ours because then they would get a taste of how good USCC really is… It’s a shame…

    • Kris

yeah but if u add up the signal insurance u pay a month ur paying a lot more plus the deductibles with the phone replacement you get FREE phone for damaged phones the only time u pay a deductible is if its lost or stolen such a better deal.. and they are bundled plans so the higher up plans can actually save money depending on the type of phones and what kind of features are with each phone… do more research sir

  • I’m A douche

Most cellular customers don’t care about value they care about the phone lineup.

    • rza11

since > 90% of everyone has a cellphone, I would beg to differ MOST only care about the phone lineup. I do, but I’m sure most care about reliable communication.

  • Allen Walker

U.S. Cellular employees trolling on BGR defending their product? Pathetic much?

  • I’m A douche

Yeah i don’t understand why people do that, it’s not like the company is going to stand up for them when people are bashing them.

  • $GUY

What U.S. Cellular is doing is a little too late, they are following what other big companies are already doing, like having bundle packages. They are like blockbuster trying to copy netflix and redbox. US Cellular also have the worst phones. They get phones a year after other carriers get them. people that want good quality phones should stay away from this company. I don’t think renaming themselves like comcast did with xfinity isnt going to help them at all.

    • Kris

what other phone company do you know of that doesnt make u sign a 2 yr agreement every two years?????????????????? alllllll of them def doing bigger and better things then the other cell companies sorry to burst ur bubble there good person lol

  • Aly

Hmm. My plan is up in November, and I am still not sure if this is enough to keep me there (have been a US Cell customer since the beginning–I was originally on Primeco!). I was thinking of going over to Sprint for better plans/4G. Not really sure I care about the points or anything. And the plans don’t seem to be great. Family plan with two lines, 1500 mins, unlim text and 5GB data = $139 at US Cell. Family plan with two lines, 1500 mins, unlim text and unlim data = $130 at Sprint. Plus better phones.

  • Josh

I was really intrigued by the pricing break down that Andrew did but lets add in Sprints pricing:

    VZW
Nationwide 1400 minutes, unlimited messaging with 2 smartphones = $180.00
    3 phones = $220
    4 phones = $260
    5 phones = $300

    USCC
Nationwide 1500 minutes, unlimted messaging with 2 smartphones = $140
    3 phones =$180
    4 phones =$220
    5 phones =$260

    SPRINT
Nationwide 1500, unlimited messaging, and unlimited calling to EVERY cellphone with 2 smartphones= $130
    3 phones =$150
    4 phones =$170
    5 phones =$190

Thats a HUGE savings EVERY SINGLE MONTH!!

    • Bill

How can it be Nationwide 1500 and unlimited calls to EVERY cellphone? doesn’t the 1500 indicate the number of minutes? Maybe you should read before submitting or clarify your post.

      SPRINT
Nationwide 1500, unlimited messaging, and unlimited calling to EVERY cellphone with 2 smartphones= $130
      3 phones =$150
      4 phones =$170
      5 phones =$190

    • Kris

do they offer the reward points? no more contracts? phone replacement with the ones it comes with? i think not…. thank you come again…

  • Josh

Sprint offers the ANY MOBILE ANY TIME with all their data plans. That means free calling to and from EVERY cell phone in the country…the 1500 is only calls to landlines

  • niki

Sprint is the shiz! I will never go anywhere else. They have the best of all worlds! It’s already been broken down. Cheap, great fones(when I can get one that’s not defective) awsome coverage, awesome customer service. What more could u ask for except for petty things that make if a little more comfortable. I hope that Sprint can come up with other creative things like the call any cell free. I called them to thank them for saving me money! It is now way eiser to have 4 fone and not use up
all of the 1500 mins. At times I was paying an extra 20 a month on more mins. I love Sprint!

    • Robert

If you live in the country, USCell is the only carrier around here that you can get a good signal, it beats Sprint, Verizion and all the others. The only thing I dont like is that I should have to upgrade to the belief program in order to upgrade to a newer phone. Instead of paying the $119.00 a month then have to go to the $139.00 price. with tax and all it will be around $160.00 . If I talked a lot on the phone which I dont, its texting, both pics and mess. So I’ll just have to stick with my current contract and buy a new phone out right so I dont have to go to the belief program..

      • Kris

why buy a new phone out right? wait for ur contract to be up and renew and get it at the discounted price…or buy a used one for half off the retail price no sense in buying a phone out right unless u absolutely need it and even then if u have signal insurance and ur phone broke make a claim and get a new one and pay the deductible ya know think about alll ur options before u just go hog wild and pay retail price
