Nokia N8 begins to ship

General

If you went ahead an pre-ordered yourself a Nokia N8, you might want to keep your eye on your mailbox. Nokia has announced that the company’s not-actually-a-flagship-but-sort-of-a-flagship Symbian^3 handset, complete with 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss lens, has begun shipping worldwide. Nokia’s blog writes:

Being a global device launch, the Nokia N8 is shipping in tens of different languages to dozens of operators around the world. That isn’t something that happens overnight and as factory production ramps up, so will the numbers of trucks leaving with freshly boxed N8s on board.

Whilst the first lucky users will be un-boxing their Nokia N8 before the weekend, others can expect to be receiving theirs over the coming days and weeks.

Anyone out there pre-order an N8?

Blown the iPhone out of the water.

  • Who

Who in hell would pre-order this symbian piece-a-shit?

All current nokia devices are plain hideous.

In case you need further information since you seem very uninformed: Nokia is still the biggest smartphone maker in the world and last quarter it grew it’s market share while at sleep. The big Scandinavian tech monster has been awakened and your “not-actually-a-flagship-but-sort-of-a-flagship” lineup of N8, E7, C7, C6-01, X7 E6, E6-01, and N9, N9-01 will destroy it’s nearest competitors put together in 2011. Oh and that is only in the first half of the year, the second half they will turn up a notch with Symbian 4 and updated lineup. I think you don’t understand the mobile industry quite enough to be eligible to write about it.

You’re so funny. For a second I thought you really mean all this, but then I found your sarcasm.

Sales Growth and Market share growth are not the same thing. According to Gartner, Symbian has been losing market share steadily. While Nokia may be the biggest manufacturer and is growing in terms of units sold, it’s growth is behind that of the smartphone market, and Symbian is a dying OS. Sorry, but it’s the truth.

I wonder if their predictions are as reliable as the Fantasy Football Projections I get each month.

      • Bobby Joe

Probably. I’m not taking sides but Nokia is just not as good as it was. Maybe in China and such but now that android is coming in from all sides idt even apple has the ability to keep up. Especially if they release another phone that has a horrible deisgn (iphone 4 ; antenna problem)

Can andoid or apple give me my beloved nokia e52? everyone dont want 500$ plus touch screen phone? cuz few works faster on likes of E52? apart from USA no other country including mine is carrier bound?

So for me and people like me? Nokia still the only option and if i see Nokia dying who will give me my needs?

Who next potential E52 or like model maker? So Nokia should stay i hope plus they have resources to bounce back in top end too, if they can use it, they made mistakes in higher end but they have time and resources to correct that as well?

World has market beyond big touch screen phones? Most parts of the world are not carrier bound to get 200$ phone or pay monthly, we get unlocked phone we call for say 6 cent per hour on prepaid package? our networks are like this? i am from Pakistan.

    • androidusr

The only reason why Nokia is such a big competitor, is because of china and all the people that live there..

An other dummy not eligible to comment on the mobile industry.

Bring on the love Nokia . . . . can’t wait *rubbing hands in anticipation* :-)

    • giggig

Nokia showing improvement on higher end? but i still feel they need to put 1 gig processor to satisfy people and hardware feather at standard with industry to shut or satisfy people and then see what happens? like 360×640 screen on 4 inch screen will give people a chance to bring it down and rightly so, Nok cant take it for granted any longer, it still has time, but its running fast.

  • Hollaman

second part of the headline: “and nobody seems to care”

  • do the droid

this phone sounds amazing, but I just love the openness of Android. Still will look into this phone, dig the camera :D

    • Jerry1ken

      Symbian is open source too!

  • wallyson

Cool. Now maybe we can get some reports on battery life and just how buggy that software is or isn’t.

  • Finntroll

Hmm “nobody seems to care” sounds interesting. Nokia reported that this phone is most preordered model in it’s history. And by the way that is a big number of phones. The 5800 has sold 45million worldwide, Nuron with it’s predecessors another 50million. iPhone’s pathetic 35million seems low when compared. :P

    • giggig

I feel this phone has record pre orders for any Nokia phone? not most pre ordered phone in history? i just heard, i am not sure? are you sure about what you said? if it has made history, Nokia could disclose numbers, they didn’t, yet.

  • http://boygeniusreport Yemeni

Man this phone is going to be good, but if only it run MeeGo, let me be the first to say game over Apple. Has anyone seen MeeGo for tables absolutely amazing. IOS has nothing on MeeGo.

  • rusty

    Would it work on Verizon?

    • Wild Bill

      It won’t work on Verizon.

      • giggig

Thank God in Pakistan we have 5 Networks, every phone works on every Network :) we don’t even get locked phones.

  • StevenHamburg

the phone itself is beautiful. but they should have done a better job on symbian^3 imo.

    • giggig

They thought they will do better Job next time around on Symbian4 :)

  • duffman

nokia is the biggest worldwide, in north America they’ve always been a flop.

    • Ezrider

It flops because for the majority of their products you can’t go into a store and walk out with a free phone and a two-year contract or get one for $1.99 or 12 free when you buy one

Thats how cell phones are bought and sold here in the land of Fat Butts & Hamburgers.

More than anything it’s their arrogance that is killing Nokia in the U.S.

Until Nokia accepts the fact that in the U.S it’s the carriers that OWN the game, they’ll never get a sniff here.

      • Ben

Um. Apple’s arrogance is making them tons of money, so it must be a good thing!

Yes, Nokia must develop relationships with American providers and let them screw up the devices with bloatware and design customizaions. I think it is more principle than arrogance. Nokia is just going to have to accept that even if it hurts. Here we go Meego and Symbian fragmentations a la Android. Open source = carrier and manufacturer control.

Me? I just bought an N8 :-) Which is not really a flagship or whatever, uggh. The bias.

      • Bobby Joe

Who walks out with free phones that can even compete with Nokia? Androids that are flagship cost a good 200$ .. even none flagship with mid range standards still ring a pricey bill. Now if you go get the samsung alias 2 or whatever yeah its cheap but that is because it is a pretty basic phone when compared to symbian winmo or android. Oh, and dont forget iOS

    • Wild Bill

I’ve long been a proponent of buying unlocked phones and I appreciate Nokia offering their products in that manner, but I’m in the definate minority. The subsidized/contract is the way phones are purchased in the U.S. It’s just the way it is.

I’m no mind reader but I think what Ezrider was saying is that until Nokia starts marketing and selling their products a different way, they’ll never be really be able to compete in the U.S.

Somebody earlier mentioned the Nokia 5800. Yes, it has sold millions upon millions since it’s introduction and yes, it has sold very well as an unlocked phone in The States. But it reached a very good price point of $200-$300 that made it affordable as an unlocked device and good value for the money.

In this current economy and probably from here on out, there probably are not alot of people who can afford or willing to shell out $600+ for a new phone. And I don’t care if it’s a Symbian, Android, Windows or whatever! There is no doubt to me that even the iPhone would not be selling like it does if people had to pay full price up front for it.

Everybody says about Nokia….”switch to Android” “switch to Android”

Thats all well and good, but doing that would not even help Nokia if people still had to pay full price for their phones, or with a few bucks shaved off at Amazon.

So while I don’t know if “arrogant” is the word to describe it, but it’s definately a mindset that Nokia has to change if it wishes to even have a shot at success in the U.S

  • Ezrider

Apple has the luxury for a bit of arrogance. Their products are well marketed and sold a number of different ways and sell well.

Most of all, they have a long string of successes in the U.S which has provided them with successful “branding”

Nokia has none of that, so they really can’t afford to be arrogant if they want to compete and succeed in the U.S

    • ThisGuy
      • Ezrider

        Who cares LOL

Doesn’t change the fact that they are still and will continue to be one of the most successful companies in the world and particularly in the U.S.

I’ve never owned one Apple Product in my entire life, but if I was going to invest my $$, guess who I would invest in?

        Hint…It doesn’t rhyme with Tokia

      • rusty

I agree. Apple makes products for idiots, and peeps that like stuff that just works. I just hate their arrogance, and that all their products require proprietary software/products made only for their devices. It’s great that my 70 yr Grandma can navigate through apples dumb interface, but my grandma doesn’t work anymore and isn’t relevant in the future of smart products. Apple makes products for people that are simple, nothing wrong with that, and thats why I contemplate buying their stock. Because there are TONS of idiots with money, but I refuse to get assraped by some cancerish douche wearing denim.

      • Wild Bill

I’ll never understand why Apples success angers so many people.

        Kind of sad really.

To call someone an idiot because they like and use a product that you don’t….Perhaps it’s you who defines the term.

      • Johnny Tremaine

Apparently, the tech world has its own cadre of elitists: people who think they are superior to the general population because the tech they choose to use is more complex.

Being familiar with DOS command lines and having the ability to mod your Symbian phone, does not make you some brilliant man.

      • Bobby Joe

I bet you wouldn’t be singing that song if you were the owner of apple or even in its corporate office.

  • rusty

Wild bill you must be an idiot because you didn’t understand what just I said. I didn’t call my my Grandma an idiot, I’m just saying that apple makes products for idiots. I.E. peeps like you who think that if you pay $1500 plus for a crappy phone/pad/comp, ( mostly comps fools) that you are the smart one. You are just too stupid to build/customize your device for your needs. If your not smart enough to do it, great, pay the fee. But if you have half a technical brain don’t waste yo money! We’re in a recession bitches!

  • Billum

Yep I have mine and I love it! The Nokia since the N95..
