Microsoft and AT&T to unveil Windows Phone 7 handsets October 11?

Rumor

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that, “Microsoft Corp. will unveil a lineup of smartphones using the revamped version of its mobile operating system on Oct. 11,” and that AT&T will begin selling said devices in early November. Microsoft does have an event planned for October 11 — Columbus Day — in New York City (which we will be at), but we’re not sure any significant announcements will be made at the open-house style event. Perhaps there is another, mysterious event planned for that day? We’ll try to dig up some more information and report back.

Everyone seems to be saying Oct 11 will be the official intro. So how come Paul Thurrott is basically saying it’s not going to be about WP7?

    • gcaw

Actually, here’s what Paul Thurrott has said:

“I mentioned on this week’s Windows Weekly podcast that the October 11 date people have been tossing around for the Windows Phone launch was incorrect. (Microsoft is holding an annual event in NYC on that day, but it’s unrelated to Windows Phone.) While I don’t know anything about a European launch, I’ve been told by a very reliable source that the US launch date for Windows Phone is November 8.”

That pretty clearly indicates that he’s saying that 11 October is not the US launch date for WP7 – but he also states that he doesn’t know about the WP7 Europe launch.

Engadget revealed they’ll be attending a Microsoft event in London on 11 October, and they’re expecting it to be about Windows Phone 7.

That said, there’s definitely a US Microsoft event on that date too – and it would certainly be strange for MS to hold an event for something entirely different entirely different on the same day.

But hey, it wouldn’t exactly be the first questionable decision Microsoft has made (Vista, Courier, Kin… et.al).

Hopefully Microsoft bought the plot next to the Kin to bury this at as well.

    AT&T can suck my d i c k

While AT&T is used to “smaller”, they do have some standards.

What a non-event. Balmer should be fired.

Engadget reported several DAYS ago that they’ve been invited by Microsoft to attend an event in London on 11 October (http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/27/microsoft-hosting-press-conference-on-october-11-well-be-there/).

That date has been widely reported (though not officially confirmed) as the date of the Windows Phone 7 launch in Europe; it seems that WSJ is just repeating that date in stating that devices will be revealed then – and mentioning seperately that AT&T are expected to launch devices in November (again, this has been widely discussed all over the web).

Only BGR has decided to connect 11 October and AT&T – no-one else, including the WSJ article make this connection.

I’m assuming that BGR’s invitation to the Microsoft event in London on 11 October got lost in the post.

    Only one phone network?

I can’t imagine that Microsoft wanted to be in this situation of having just one phone network in the USA.

Windows Phone 7 shows all the signs that it is turning into another embarrassing situation like the KIN.

Microsoft had announced weeks ago that they were focusing on companies using world wide gsm not cdma. So at&t is the primary focus off the bat. Vzw will follow some time in early 2nd quarter 2011

    • cyberstoic

I know that they are launching GSM first and CDMA later. But what about t-mobile US? They are also GSM. Is Microsoft going to ignore them?

      • techjunkieforlife

I would say lack of T-Mobile support period is about the handset manufacturer more than anything else. Getting decent AWS hardware has been an issue. Thou I would say look for the HD7 (WM7) replacement for their current HD slab on T-Mobile.

RIM passing up Verizon for the Storm 3, no iphone for Verizon, WM7 passing on Verizon. That’s gonna leave a mark.

    • trooth

Verizon probably passed on the Storm 3 because RIM can’t get their stuff together as it is. They realease bugged software and then patch it with software that introduces new bugs.

As for the IPhone, Verizon holds the power in that bargaining. Apple is against the wall and losing market share, they need Verizon to grow market share. Verizon wont have to bend over backwards for Apple like they would have had to do two years ago.

WM7 passing on Verizon? I seriously doubt that. Microsoft loves some Verizon. You did see that they got them to Bing on about every new phone coming out. WM7 will be the king of Bing phones. The best WM7 phone will probably find its way to Verizon. Verizon was the only carrier for the failed Kin after all.

  • OUTtheWINDOW

The WM7 is going to be the best phone ever to wipe your asshole with, after taking a big massive shit. Saves you paper! ;-D
