Sprint to release Epic 4G software update tomorrow to address data speed issues

General

According to an administrator on Sprint’s official forums, the company will be releasing a software update for the Epic 4G to address issues with data speeds being capped. The thread, titled “3G Upload Capped,”  has well over 500 replies. The administrator’s response is as follows:

Good news – an update will be released tomorrow 9/30.  It will be rolled out over a 4 day period so not everyone will get it on day 1.

I will have the standard MR information (fixes included, rollout schedule, etc) available tomorrow morning and will post it in a new featured thread.

Hopefully this will squash he data speed issue that Epic 4G users have been reporting.

So it wasn’t “Epic” when it was released till now?

Leave it to Sprint to release a “Fast” phone that needs an “update” to get it to anywhere near advertised speeds.

This is what happens when carriers custom skin and add bloatware. fail.

or maybe sprint is just on top of the game sounds like some of the other flavors of the galaxy s might have the same issue, and Samsung does the UI not sprint. get your facts straight

      • android fanboy

No sprint has added a few things as well. Idiot.

      • jcan

yup there called apps they have left touch wiz alone, just like the evo they didn’t touch the sense UI, just apps which every one refers to as bloatware, yes i admit the apps they add wont be the best and bloatware is putting it nicely but there not much dif. then computers being filled with crap out of the box, same concept just remove them

      • josh

        You’re an idiot.

      • watbetch

No, Sprint is the reason why this update is needed. They thought they would get away with capping upload. They’re sadly mistaken.

      • jdubb

No, you’re also an idiot. We’re talking about Sprint here, not AT&T. It was Samsung’s fault. The Vibrant and Captivate also have the same problems.

      • watbetch

No they don’t you MORON, AT&T disabled HSUPA on the Captivate and the Samsung Vibrant has HSUPA left on.

Sprint and AT&T need to cap uploads to make up for their garbage networks.

      • gquaglia

No, that’s what happens when Samsung makes a crap phone.

  • Josh

Hopefully they release an update for Verizon as well. My Fascinate switches from 3G to 1X for no reason. I already did a hard reset, but that didn’t work. I love the phone, but my Droid never did that.

    • PAPINYC

Josh, take it back to Verizon and have them replace it; it’s not supposed to do that. I had that problem with Verizon a couple of times; at one point, they pulled me out of what they called “the switch” and rebuilt my number back into “the switch”. Don’t let them issue a “trouble ticket” for your area; just keep complaining and insisting your old phone did not have that problem.

      Cheers!

Just did the same for T-Mobile. They blamed the network but had that issue in 3 states so they couldn’t anymore. Getting a replacement device, selling it, and buying something awesomer that’s unlocked and won’t do that.

  • MacMan

    Way to go samchung.

    • http://twitter.com/mattstkc MattSTKC

definitely not their fault. the Epic is the Vibrant, Fascinate, and/or captivate just with a keyboard. It’s Sprint’s UI and bloatware that borked it.

      • josh

Like I said, you’re an idiot.

      • gquaglia

The Vibrant and Captavate have the same problems. Do your homework.

      • Jeff

Wait…when did Sprint start putting a custom UI on their phones? I thought VZW was the only company stupid enough to do that.

      • Jeff

P.S. I know about the One-Click crap on their feature phones…

What about smartphones? Did the Touch, Touch Pro, Mogul, Blackberry, Instinct, Instinct S30, Instinct HD, Hero, Moment, Evo, Epic have custom UI’s???

  • PAPINYC

Wasn’t aware it had any issues.

  • GN

I guess if you never notice a data cap, you wouldnt have caught the problem.

  • serpentor

Maybe this is why I was getting such shitty speeds when I rooted and wifi hotspot with my laptop.

In any case I just returned and now wait for WP7.

    • tx_dbs_tx

That’s going to be quite a while. In fact you will be eligible for upgrade again by the time a wp7 comes out so you might as well use your current upgrade until then.

I think the HTC evo has data capped as well in different areas. On some towers here in Texas where I used to live (50 miles away) On 3G I get 2.5mbps down consistently and where I now live its much slower ( .50 – .80kpbs) at most.

      • serpentor

I would rather get WP7 on sprint because an additional line is only $20 (for everything,) but for now, I’m going to get it on my Tmo line.

  • debbie barnes

i could care less… Why doesnt it have the same touch jizz as european models and when is froyo coming

  • Swagger

The Epic is better than anything on Verizon. The only thing close is the Incredible, and the Inc is one hell of a phone.

  • Boost Employee

Is there an app to get better reception with Sprint?

How about an app to get better customer service?

    • Senator Blutarsky

Yea, they do… it’s called the “Switch me to Verizon” button, Only costs $35 a month on top of your Sprint bill…

    • watbetch

It’s called force roaming on Verizon. Sprint customers seem to brag about it while everyone people how awesome Sprint coverage is.

  • DubYa

When are people going to wake up and realize that Samsung makes garbage phones.

    • GN

I think most manufactures had there days of not soo good generations of phones, including HTC….had there high end phone about 2 years ago or more…way sluggish, and way not such a good screen and features…then again that ran wm6 I think, which im sure slowed things way down also..not the best experience for me…Samsung has come along way I think, but still has some catching up to do with Apple, Motorola and HTC of course these days…they seem to be on the right track now with there hardware for sure.

    • watbetch

When you admit you’re a disappointment

  • gquaglia

Samsung didn’t do their homework with the Galaxy S line. So much promise, so much sorrow. HTC makes the best Android phones, hands down!

  • 3 Phones Jugglin

Didnt notice any issue….but good job for Sprint to get on top of updates for their phones. Especially in this 4G race their trying to stay ahead of.

HOPEFULLY…that 2.2 for the Epic is out by Halloween.

  • Sally

Samsung/Sprint/Google….you guys lets alot of people down by delaying the update….dont be upset when you see a large alot of Epics being returned before the 30 days are up.
