Dell to launch 7-inch tablet in 'the next few weeks'

General

The Wall Street Journal has filed a report indicating that PC manufacturing giant Dell will be releasing a 7-inch tablet “in the next few weeks.” The information comes courtesy of Amit Midha, Dell’s president of Greater China. “It [the 7-inch tablet] was showed off at Oracle World by Michael last week and we’ll be launching very, very soon—within the next few weeks,” said Mr. Midha. The president confirmed that the 7-inch offering would run Google’s Android operating system but noted that future products could (and would) be released running Microsoft’s Windows 7; Mr. Midha also noted that Google Chrome was still under consideration by the company. The Dell executive also mentioned that a 3-inch product and 10-inch tablet would be launching within the next 6 to 12 months as well. From the sounds of it, the tablet market will be a very crowded space by 2011… and that isn’t a bad thing.

Doesn’t look great at all. Not excited. And knowing Dell, the price will be over-the-top as well.

3 inch tablet? So you don’t have to bother using your pesky smart phone when you need to do something?

Apple should just re-brand the new iPod Nano as a 1 inch tablet, that would show Dell who’s boss in the micro-tablet market.

I didn’t even notice the 3 inch tablet part….that’s like an iPhone screen!

Where are you guys seeing 3-inch tablet?

It says 3-inch PRODUCT…like, dunno, maybe a phone!

      Jesus, READ!

Dell’s business strategy is a on the brink of destruction. 3-inch tablet? 3-inch & tablet shouldn’t be in the same sentence.

Where is the advertising for this tablet? With the huge success of the iPad, Dell can’t afford to release a “tablet” to compete in that market without heavy advertising to create product awareness.

I totally agree with you, Androidian. Not only where is the advertising for this upcoming tablet, but where is the advertising for the mobile devices they have already released (Aero & Streak)?

This guys. 3 inch and a 7 inch WTF. Doesn’t Dell make a 5 inch cell phone ? Dell make like a banana and split.

  • Mitch

It better not be running Android 1.5 or they can kiss my ass.

Also, I 100% agree with the others. WTF is a 3″ tablet?! I think they better call that one a PMP or something along those lines, because that is an absolute joke.

If you actually read the article linked from BGR, they call the 7 inch a tablet and the 3 inch (also a 4 inch) adevice. As the 5 inch tablet is also a phone, I’m thinking the 3 and 4 inch devices are, urmmm, phones.

Leave it to BGR to screw it up

It will probably run Android 1.5 (1.6 if we are lucky) and have proprietary connectors requiring expensive cables and docks for charging or video output.

Welp, another 7 inch tablet that won’t make it to mass production. Only Dell employees and their families will use it, that’s if they can get it for free.

I understand making five “different” types of laundry detergent or five “different” types of cereal and hoping that you make money on sheer volume. I am not sure that strategy is going to get it done in the CE space.

Then again, what do I know. Dell has had huge success in the last five years. (sarcasm)

While I greatly enjoy the apparent ton of competitors that will enter the tablet market by year’s end, 7″ is definitely the smallest size that should even be considered otherwise your just hold a talkless smart phone… oh wait that’s the iPod touch.

    • Carmen

      iPod Touch = PMP

      Faggot

I personally would like a 7 inch Ipad. I think the Ipad is slightly too big and think the Ipod touch is too small. I think a half way point is a good idea. Especially if it costs less.
But, in other side, the big screen ipad help me enjoy my videos on ipad. I am sticking with my iPad with so many vidoes. When I back home, I would watching all kinds of videos with my boyfriend. I think others will do the same once they try it and realize it is the perfect personal computer :-)
So, I prefer the big screen ipad. By the way, To watch all kinds of videos and movies on ipad, we should thanks be to God, ahaa, just a joke. we should thanks to iFunia. this third party supplies the best ipad video converter so that we can save all kinds of vidoes on ipad.

Dell and other manufactures really blew it by “wetting their pants to keep warm” by getting hamstrung using Android. No one benefits from this mess but Google.
There is no clear compelling reason for a consumer to purchase one bakery goods OS infested product over another other than to boast, hope and pray that the next version would “fix” the shortcomings of the current one.
    Good luck Dell.

I can’t tell if you are joking because of what that Nokia guy said or what. I mean, at first, it seems like you are being sarcastic, but by the end of your comment, I’m not sure.
