'Free Phone Fridays' promotion coming to Best Buy

Retail

It looks like Best Buy Mobile wants you to get your October weekends started with a smartphone purchase. Via a press release, Best Buy has announced a new, limited-time program known as “Free Phone Fridays.” As Best Buy explains: “Beginning Friday, Oct. 1 and running every Friday in October, Best Buy Mobile will feature four free mobile phones (one from each carrier) in all Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile specialty stores, as well as online at BestBuy.com/Mobile. Each week this new promotion will feature at least one high-end, in-demand smart phone. The free promotion phones require a new two-year activation.” Starting right out of the gate, on October 1, BBM will offer the Samsung Fascinate (Verizon), BlackBerry Curve (Sprint), HTC Aria (AT&T), and Samsung Gravity (T-Mobile) for $0. “The specific weekly deals will be announced in stores and online, including Best Buy Mobile’s Facebook page and Twitter account, at 1 p.m. central time on the Thursday prior to that Friday’s one-day specials.” What do you think?

Any chances of an iPhone 4 for free? I doubting it… But it’s a good idea by BBM to generate some buzz and get more people in the door (to potentially buy other things)

    • bringit

nope – no need to give away iPhones, can barley keep them in stock as is.

      • Tdot34

Nope, Apple forbids discounting of iPhone’s by third parties. Several friends work in the cellular industry, Apple wants to keep product prestige, and any discount is because Apple mandated the reduced price and it would be applicable to all authorized sellers. Apple also bans any advertisements of its products that are not authorized by Apple.

      • Android sucks

I dont blame Apple. Android is like Nascar…annoyingly tacky.

      • Andy

Tell me what scent powder Steve uses on his balls when you come off of them :P

      • Sheed

Apple certainly isn’t the first company to have this much control over their own company.

      • bringit

        smart.

      • Angizzle

they def. made iphones free if you had the best buy reward zone premier at one point, so… yea

      • Not really

In regards to no-contract device prices, not subsidized prices:

Your friends “in the industry” are incorrect, Apple does not forbid the discounting of their devices, but because Apple products sell at MSRP there is no reason for authorized resellers to charge less.

Your friends don’t understand how resellers work, because once the device is in the resellers inventory it’s already been purchased by them, and they can do as they please with it. Another fun fact is that the devices are sold to retailers at near MSRP, making discounts even more impractical.

      • serpentor

If that’s true, besides selling iPhones for contract money from the carriers, why would a retailer want to sell other Apple products?

      • Morgan

You don’t quite understand how it works either…

All i would say is that as a reseller the profit solely on an Iphone is zero. There is more money in selling a Samsung Knack sadly…. but what self-respecting Phone location could exist without the iPhone? ..or at least try to make a buck on some sweet marked up cases!

  • Crown

The free phone is for 2 year new and upgrades.

    According to bby.com You’re welcome

    • superchunk

      Well, that answers my question.

  • Brian

Just more proof that all these phones are way over priced…

  • superchunk

I’ll have to see if this is ok for upgrades or if it is for new users only as many of Amazon’s deals are set up that way.

If it works for those simply upgrading, then this Friday I may just own a new Fascinate. :)

    • JJL

It works for upgrading. In fact, I bought mine on the 18th, got $50 back when the price dropped to $149.99 and already called to confirm that I’ll be able to get all of my money back. F’ing sweet.

  • JK

Maybe Amazon’s Penny Phones were slicing into their biz…..LOL

  • Apples

    No iphone? Lame

    • superchunk

Must be Apple blocking as even Amazon, who has been doing this for awhile now, does not discount the iPhone.

    • Android sucks

Well Iphones retain their value. Just check out craigslist. Goodluck finding them at even half of even the subsidy. Then go look for whatever Droid came out 2 weeks to 2 months prior. It will be at least half price. DROID DOESNT Resell well.

      • superchunk

Not sure what craigslist you look at but I was checking for my friend with the 1st droid and it was still selling for almost $200.

Real item is that iPhones are made by one company that release once per year where the Android based phones are made by many companies with many releases. Also the reason why AndroidOS will be undisputed king.

      • superchunk

Yep just checked Ebay too, and the year old android phones there are also selling for over $200.

Also, I love how people -/+ you on this site. Such fanboyism, lol.

      • Apples

This is true, iphones always retain value since its a great phone, droids dont, theyre just like any other plastic phone except it runs android.

      • superchunk

Also, droid x, droid 2, and fascinate are all over $400 on ebay.

So, in the end yes, iPhone’s sell for more for the reasons I stated; however, you grossly undervalued the Android lineup.

      • Wild Bill

Most of those $400 phones on ebay are “Buy It Now” deals for brand new products that people buy in quantity to try to make a buck off of selling.

Thats like buying a bunch of Chevy Pick Ups and then selling them for just a few bucks under brand new prices on Auto Trader

I would not consider those as “resell” items.

      • superchunk

No, I saw that the majority were heavily bidded on phones all over $400. I can provide links if you wish.

      • Wild Bill

But having said that, If iPhones resell for more or retain more of their value, its simply because there are less of them floating around so sellers can ask and get higher resell prices.

The market is flooded with Android Devices so commen sense says there are more of them available for resell thus lowering their resell value.

      • superchunk

I am a heavy Ebay user. I know how Ebay works.

I searched for ‘Droid X’ or ‘Droid 2′ or ‘iPhone 3GS’, etc. Under Cell Phones & PDAs; sorted by ending soonest, with Auction only selected as well as US only.

In each case you’ll see a few low offers for questionable users and/or broken phones, then you’ll see a bunch of over $400 listings that have less than an hour of time left.

      • Dave Who?

There’s also alot of used bid only droid x’s in the $150.00-$300.00 range as well.

Now go on ebay and see how many “bid only” iPhone 4′s are going at that price.

I own a Droid X myself, but I’ll be the first one to say that if I were inclined to sell it, I couldn’t sell it for nearly as much as my sister could get for her iPhone 4.

It’s really no big deal, but it’s the truth.

      • VZWer

What truth? The only truth is economic demand theory you moron. Supply > Demand = Lower Price and conversely Supply < Demand = Higher Price. Hence Driod will sell for less than the Iphone.

      • endless

        2 thoughts:

1: iphones have an reality distortion apple on them causing crazy prices.

2: iphones are unlockable GSM phones that you can’t get on other carriers, let alone for a cheaper price at retail.

i know enough people who have put iphones on tmobile…not sure why… but to each his own.

  • Wild Bill

    Snorrrrrrrrrrre

Wake me when they start doing Titillating TV Tuesdays, and give away 52-inch HDTV’s

  • Swagger

    What a slow news day…….

  • TONY

HTC Aria is free through BBM? It’s already free through Radioshack.

  • What?

I think it’s worth a short post every week letting readers know which 4 phones are free. It would be a public service.

  • sean76

So a free Samsung Fascinate!!! Thats a pretty sweet deal…

  • Mike

“high-end, in-demand smart phone” does not match with the HTC Aria… then again… it’s the second best phone on the iPhone network second to the Captivate.

  • Wild Bill

    Thats ok.

I know how eBay works too. I’ve sold and and bought on there.

    But thanks anyway.

  • PAPINYC

Isn’t Verizon giving away a free Fascinate with the purchase of one, seven days a week? Boy, either times are really bad or the Fascinate is just FREE. Actually, they’ll let you choose any phone from their awesome line-up. However, does not include the EVOOO; the phone that really matters.

    • http://protonus.ws Protonus

I don’t understand the EVO fanboy ism. The Fascinate and the whole Galaxy S line up is a vastly superior phone to the EVO, it blows it away. The snapdragon CPU in the EVO is outdated. The OMAP’s in the moto droid’s are superior CPU’s and have a better GPU too, and the Hummingbird CPU in the Galaxy S phones is even faster than that, and their GPU is even better too!

      • Morgan

I would recommend using the two side by side. Any of the Galaxy S phones are not as fast or responsive as an Evo. I read it was something to do with the File Structure Samsung used but don’t know that for a fact… although that screen is damn pretty… and I agree on paper that the Hummingbird is fantastic – It doesn’t seem to quite translate into real world performace.

        Both sick phones regardless.

  • Dream

From what I observed was that the Fascinate has been selling quite good from what i observed in my Hometown store, that sleek design and just rite screen size makes this ideal for alot of people

  • Blah

Most of these cheap phones are already free.
All those phones listed are free for those carriers at Radioshack, no need to wait til friday at best buy….

  • Blackberry Bold

You are all crazy if you think iPhone will be free.

  • RWoody

I wonder if this will work for people that are in a contract with a year to go. I wonder if we can sign a new 2 year. Hmm.

    • Morgan

My understanding is that at Best Buy you could only do a 1 year upgrade on a Sprint Premier line…. otherwise you are paying an ETF and setting up a new line to get this.

  • john

    BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Teco221

I wish that iPhone would be free….. Other countries people can get it for free if sign a new contract, but not here since only one lousy ATT…..

  • James

Does this mean since I paid 150 for my Facinate 3 days ago I can take it back to the store and get my 150 back but still keep the phone since its now being offered for free within the return and exchange period?

    • Blazian

If you bought if from BB you better take it back Thursday and return it. It does say that the offer is not valid on prior purchases. So doing this on the same day of the sale is not a wise decision. ;)

  • TONY

That sucks! I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that it doesn’t include the iPhone4 and thanks to this article I won’t have to waste a trip going to Best Buy.

  • EddyS

I have tried two straight weeks in a row to find any type of ” limited-time program known as “Free Phone Fridays” listed on Best Buy Mobile or even on their BestBuy.com website. Best Buy Mobile was to feature four free mobile phones (one from each carrier) in all Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile specialty stores every Friday in the month of October.

I have yet to find it on either site. What gives? It is get canceled before it even got start? Anyone? anybody? somebody?

  • Shirley
