Apple approves official Google Voice application for iOS?

Rumor

TechCrunch is reporting that “a source close to Google” has revealed that Apple has already approved an official, Google-created, Google Voice application for iOS. The report states that the app is “on its way to the iPhone in the next few weeks.” Where the report gets confusing is here: “Google just needs to revamp the application to work with the iPhone 4 and iOS’s multitasking capabilities.” We were unaware that Apple approved apps that didn’t work yet? Regardless, if you rely heavily on Google Voice on your iPhone — and don’t fully trust some of the other, third-party offerings — this is definitely good news.

If it really got approved they must have had to hammer out a deal where apple gets a cut of any fees that google collects when using google voice on iOS.

    • statcy

      LOL, no.

Apple has been scrambling to do anything after getting dumped into 3rd place in sales by Google’s Android.

Google sure as hell isn’t going to cut Apple any sort of deal with Android dominating cellphones sales and iPhones losing market-share.

Stacy I was unaware that Android, a free OS that Google makes, was outselling Apple? Maybe you mean the 10+ manufacturers collectvely who use the Android OS are beating one company with one OS?

      • Mikey B

Thank GOD someone else understands this reality besides myself….People don’t realize that the iphone OS is on the iphone….that’s it phone-wise. The Android OS is on A LOT OF PHONES. Of COURSE there’s going to be more Android phones dominating 1 iPhone. Geeeeeeesh.

      • Grep

You too act as if Android being developed by 10+ manufacturers is a bad thing. The reason this is the case is because of the Open Source model that Google has decided to follow. It’s rather obvious that if all those manufacturers can use a FREE platform instead of having to develop their own or dare I say… use such a proprietary system as Apples, they should and wound, why not take advantage of that?

ANDROID is outselling iOS, that’s the comparison being made, who the hell cares if its 1000 manufacturers to 1. That’s Apple’s own fault for wanting to do it there way. At the end of the day; you’re comparing OS platforms; much like Windows vs Mac…. and we all know how that turned out.

If Google can get as many manufacturers on board to adopt Android, why wouldn’t they?

      • Perspective

If you’re going to make comparisons, make sure your terms are correct. Android as an OS outsells the iPhone; it doesn’t outsell iOS collectively, as iOS is found in the iPhone, the iPod Touch and the iPad, which collectively sold around 16 million units last quarter. Android’s sales “victory” last quarter was over the iPhone only; with the iPod Touch selling at about 60% of iPhone sales (as in iPhone sells 9 million units and iPod Touch sells 5.4 million for a total of 13.4) and the iPad selling 3.2 million in its only quarter for which numbers are available, Android’s 60+ devices still aren’t outselling Apple’s devices.

Sorry, Android fans. Well, actually it’s your own fault you’re tools, so I’m not sorry. Cheers.

Damn!! how that i have already paid for GV Mobile +, Apple is approving this official Google app (presumably FREE).

DROID DOES Google Voice better. Who cares about Apple and the iphone anymore? The DROID OS may be a little halfbaked but at least its open source!!!!! Plus you can never go wrong with DROID and VERIZON!!!

    • statcy

Yep. Nothing compares to native Google Voice integration right in every Android phone.

Making due with some half-assed iPhone app that could be pulled at anytime by some idiotic Apple bureaucrat is something only the tiny hardcore Apple fanbase would put up with.

      • MadSkillz

@Statcy So you are saying that official Google Apps released on other platforms are half-ass. Are you a ten year old?

People just say anything to make themselves feel better.

      • Tony

“Half-assed” probably isn’t the best term, but I would assume that Google would make their Android app better than all the others, or at least not worse.

  • Rusty Shackleford

The iPhone on one carrier still has more marketshare than android devices on all carriers. Sit on that fanboy. And I really wish the vzw dorks would stop referring to every android device as a ‘droid’.

    • Tony

Didn’t iPhone have like a 2 year head start?? Or am I missing something? Also, isn’t Android slowly closing the gap and taking market share?

      • Tony

        Down-vote for truth. Proceed.

the android os may be free and open source but that’s ONLY the base android os code. How many of you really believe that manufacturers are just dumping pure android on your phones? All those extra features, like htc’s sense? Yeah, those aren’t so ‘free’ and ‘open.’

  • smh

    @statcy,

there are like 10s of Google Voice apps in the App Store. if they pull this app, someone will make another. people r so hung up on brands when pretty much all phones do the same shit.

    • Tony

But if they pulled one GV app, why wouldn’t they pull all of them?

  • u suck

@Norm, I only see kids with Androids. Pull out that R2-D2 at a meeting…

    • Tony

I only see moronic sheep who don’t know anything about phones or technology with iPhones. I’m not saying that’s your average iPhone user, but those are the ones I know.

      • android is a joke

then that just makes u an average loser who doesn’t know many people…sorry

  • Rusty Shackleford

Android is NOT outselling iOS, nor does it have more marketshare worldwide. Android isn’t free nor is it truly ‘open’ as all you nutswingers claim

  • reason

@Tony, because they are a company and they make money from these apps… so they wouldn’t.. lol, u guys an ur “open”ness… it’s called business on both ends… google makes money, apple makes money… and u… u spend ur money. unless u own stock in anyone of these companies ur rant is pointless.

    Got em!! lol

My assumption was that that line meant that Apple had finally approved the original Google Voice app, the one that has been floating around pending approval. Now that that has been approved they’re going to go back and update for iOS 4 and add background support.
