Motorola DROID 2 has FM radio receiver, hack

General

Have a hankering for that old-fashioned frequency modulation (FM) radio?  A member of the XDA forums has successfully ported several Motorola DROID X files over to the DROID 2 allowing the FM radio application to function on the QWERTY-slider handset. All that is required is a rooted DROID 2 and a fair amount of patience. Hit the read link to view the full instructions sheet.

somewhere, a Motorola employee is grinding their teeth: “We didn’t approve those files for the Droid 2!”, “I thought the locked boot loader was supposed to block that from happening!”

    hahaha

    ok.

really… with slacker, grooveshark, pandora… you want fm radio? really

    • tomm

Can you listen to live local sports games on slacker, grooveshark, pandora? I think not.

Another reason for FM is gym/fitness centers often have their TVs setup to use lower power FM frequencies for audio.

I have to assume battery life with FM is significantly better than online radio.

Your not getting a real workout if your watching tv. Just saying.

        who says you are not?

What if you love your local radio station’s morning show and DJ’s and want to support someone other than giant multinational conglomerates? Preston and Steve where I’m at in Philly is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard on radio, and it’s all great local news, sports and events.

Hah – and WMMR isn’t owned by a conglomerate like Greater Media, nosiree ;)

with android apps like “tune in radio” YES you can listen to your local radio stations and games and dont have to go though all that for a feature that almost no one uses..

      • ChocoTaco

Except FM uses far less battery power, penetrates buildings far better and will work when your texts and calls come in without disconnecting, not to mention often sounds better since internet streams are usually highly compressed audio.

      • stp147

But you can use TuneIn Radio

Wow that took a long time for my comment to post, Good thinking Hank

I don’t understand the logic behind these carriers. What the hell does Verizon have to gain by allowing FM radio on the X and not the D2? What is the point? Or is this Moto’s bright idea? What the hell is the point of Android if you’re going to load it up with third party skins, third party programs and disable features? How the hell does FM radio access cut into revenue? It seems the only people it’s going to hurt are the people at Pandora. Ugh.

Verizon Wireless offers many great products through our separate Vcast store. By disabling the FM radio we ensuring that our customers can have the best possible experience through our separate Vcast app and media solutions.

      • ChocoTaco

Then why leave it on the X and not the D2? That’s what makes me wonder if it’s Moto’s bright idea.

  • Obj_me

So wait the VZW US D2 has FM Tuner hardware built-in but moto and/or VZW have disabled it in software?

  • SKINNI

Nice hack! I use my FM app alot at work

  • Jon D

    No static at all

I did this mod in about 5 minutes – it isn’t any more difficult than rooting your phone (assuming you understand what the root does). Seems to work pretty well, although I’m not sure how useful FM radio is going to be for me.
