Verizon Wireless Motorola DROID R2D2 launch: Stormtroopers, giveaways, and more

Exclusive

Star Wars fan? Android fan? Verizon Wireless customer? September 29th at midnight should go down in history for you then. Not only is that when Motorola’s DROID R2D2 limited edition device goes on sale at select Verizon Wireless stores across the country, but it’s also looking to be quite an event. We have been just sent a couple images from one of the participating stores, a store called Vista Ridge in Lewisville, Texas, and we also have some info on what is exactly is happening for the launch — it’s pretty crazy. Apparently, the participating stores will be giving away 5 Motorola R2D2 units, there will be actual “Stormtroopers” at the store (employees dressed up as Stormtroopers), video gaming, a live DJ and more. Stores are getting approximately 200 units and stock will not be replenished. Last bit of info… our tipster said that Motorola reps have indicated the Star Wars edition device is actually running a 1.2GHz CPU, not a 1GHz. Pretty interesting, huh? Our only wish? That the keyboard on the handset was white.

Let’s hear it — anyone gearing up to get one of these things on Tuesday evening?

One more photo after the break!

Can someone tell me what these postage size stamps are like the one that shows up on that poster in the bottom right corner?

    • Velmond

      It’s a 2D barcode.

      • Mike 31337

Its also called a Qr code , ( Google – create a Qr code ) You can make your own. also if you have a app such as shop savvy or a bar code scanner app you can scan this this to reveal info , such as links , Etc…

      • KEnt

Thanks for the info. I’ve only seen these on android products

      • blah

Get a bar code scanner to read it. You’re going to see QR codes everywhere. Basically they just give your a way to scan the code, and then it’ll let you go to the web page.

calling all vigins…come in virgins…we have your phone for you …over.

  • cellphoneguy

this nay be as retarded as labeling your android devices as Droids…… just my 2 pennies. and AT

    • sirpaul

Android does not = droid…just so you know.

      • strider_mt2k

Indeed, not quite the droid I’m looking for…

      • cellphoneguy

please explain how that works….. Ive used “droid” and android devices and the only difference is the evo, aria and mytouch 3g have much faster internet. and each carriers respective skin and bloatware. Why is Droid not Android???? go back to your shift at your verizon store you moron.

“Android” is a general term referring to a basic, infrastructure operating system that is open source and can be used by any device or software maker without incurring hefty licensing fees. This term is often also used to refer directly to a phone that is running Android as its operating system.

“Droid” is the name for any one of a specific mobile device, consisting of Motorola phones that have been used to explore your mom’s privates, cellphoneguy, by interstate tractor-trailer drivers who pay between one and three dollars worth of corn chips for the privilege.

I hope this clears this up a bit. It’s a bit confusing, anyone would admit.

I’m not a dork (who am I kidding) and I won’t be getting this phone but I really like these special editions. I’m sure this one will sell out quickly just like the Fender myTouch did and that was a wood grained phone on T-Mobile.

  • Suneet

i still wish the Milestone 2 was out this year in Canada

  • Droid doesn’t

Which button do you press to call your mom to pick you up?

    • do the droid

      voice activated, duh.

  • superchunk

ok, I love SW and I love Google/Android, however there is no way I’d buy a phone that was so blatantly nerdy. lol. btw, I’m also a self proclaimed nerd for so many reasons.

  • Jimmy Dingo

Well I for one think it is a cute, imaginative, creative and fun idea. Stormtroopers? I certainly hope Darth and Tarkin show up.

  • JM

What the heck makes people like Star Wars so much? I don’t get it.

  • Jahmez

    I want one so badly

  • stranger

The real geeks are the people who think their non-R2D2 phone gets them laid. The irony.

  • bigdog65

Some of you people REALLY need to get a life!

    • Mark S

      Real or Imaginary?

  • James

I wonder if, since it has the 1.2ghz cpu, if this is the “world edition” underneath the special edition looks. The actual Droid 2 World Edition has a 1.2 ghz cpu as well.

    • do the droid

thank you James, your the only person who I believe made a worthy comment so far….

      • Cole

        I second that…

  • djkd

lol @ chris “mate with me”..ahaha classic!

  • bringit

Included with the R2D2 are large glasses, a pocket protector, braces, severe acne, and a watch-calculator. The R2D2 will be released at the next dungeons and dragons convention.

I love my Droid! It is WAY better then the iPhone, trust me I’ve had both! The best part is, I got mine for Free for testing it out and giving a testimonial. Last I checked, they still had a couple available. Click Here for a Free Droid Cell Phone

This is a waste of my time just get the original droid 2 there is no difference plus it is fagadelic to carry around a little r2d2 in my pocket

    • KREJ

      That’s what she said.

Except these Droid phones can’t do voice and data at the same time.

  • OneTwo

most people want reception and that weak ass att argument over voice and data at the same time ..the masses could give a rats ass

  • Big Rob

    until the network drops you…

  • lberkeley

At the moment that is a fair argument. I don’t know too many people that can or do take advantage of it though. The point will be short lived when LTE capable phones and network are released. I believe Verizon will be able to do voice/data simultaneously then.
