Sony Ericsson to drop Symbian from handset lineup

General

Sony Ericsson spokesperson, Aldo Liguori, spoke with Buisnessweek and revealed the handset makers plans — or lack thereof – for Nokia’s Symbian mobile operating system. “We have no plans for the time being to develop any new products to the Symbian Foundation standard or operating system,” said Mr. Liguori . The remarks come on the heels of a statement by SE’s Chief Creation Officer, Rikko Sakaguchi, which explained that the company had made a “significant shift to support Android.” Sony Ericsson did indicate that that they would retain their membership in the Symbian Foundation, despite the absence of the OS from their handset pipeline.

    Just as Apple’s star has risen, it too will fall. Not so long Apple was in the dumps – without Mr. Jobs – and at some point, he will step down. He will also make mistakes and then others will capitalize. Please look back at history and note how quickly things change. Best not to be blindly loyal to anything, not even an apple logo with a bite taken out of it!

    @Ben,

    umm, they’ve been out since the 80s. People like you don’t understand that it’s not just a phone maker. they are a company that manufactures computers and computer like products. so I guess when computers are non existent so will u.

      I think he understood just fine. No where does he say anything about phones. And he’s right, Apple was a struggling company before the rehire Steve Jobs as CEO. A few years later they capitalized on the mp3 players market, then they capitalized on the smartphone market as well. Then they used their name based off of those two products to increase sales of computing products, especially towards students. 15 years ago when computers were becoming more common, Apple wasn’t selling. They were innovative designs at the time, but one look at the price tag and people were drawn away.
      It wasn’t until Apple has a strangle hold on one market that it started seeing sales increase in computing.
      At least today, people walk into a retail store like Best Buy or shop directly and consider buying a Mac because subconsciously they assume Apple is automatically a good product. Now I’m not arguing its now. It’s just an automatic thought process, because people who are not knowledgeable about personal computers will automatically relate brands although its two different products.

    @WT,

    It’s assumed that he is because it’s a phone topic, that’s why I mentioned the phone. And in your argument against, ur supporting my initial comment. Apple makes computers and computer like products. I heard about the 90s downfall but they survived, regardless of how they made it out and what wave they caught (MP3). They create devices, some good some bad but devices…and as long as there is technology, they will be around.
