HTC's Sense will not be coming to Windows Phone 7… as we know it

General

HTC’s CEO, Peter Chou, was speaking with FierceWireless when he spoke the following words: “I don’t think we would do complete Sense UI on Windows Phone 7. However, I will say that we will innovate differently to improve the experience and to get some HTC unique and differentiated experience on Windows Phone 7 in the future.” A company spokesperson clarified some of Mr. Chou’s remarks: “Sense, by definition, is a way for HTC to improve the user experience in both big and small ways–which we will certainly work to do with Windows Phone 7 devices. But, if this does not include a fully revised user interface, that does not mean that it doesn’t have a form of the Sense experience–it may just be expressed in ways that do not include the interface.” It certainly will be interesting to see how HTC puts its own touches on future WP7 devices without the full Sense UI as we know it.

    • WalterSobchak

      Whats a comp? What’s a cellphone? What’s an ip?

      • WalterSobchak

I didn’t mean to be dislikeable, I was just trying to mohammad mohammad.

    • DonnyKerabatsos

It sounds like an IP block… maybe you shouldn’t have been spamming or being racist.

    • Mrwirez

      lets hope so

    • Marcosoft

I think they do that. I came on here one time and posted a few things and the next pay I couldn’t visit the page at all but I could on my phone and other computers. About a month later… I was able to come here again. Watch what you say… I guess.

not a good day for windows mobile

    • tande04

      How so?

There goal is to have a unified user experience and this is the only way to get there.

    • Jake One

huh? what? This is just my opinion, but manufacturer’s add desktops/front ends to either:

      a. Cover up an ‘ugly’ OS, or
      b. ‘Hook’ you into their brand

In the case of A, it can only be better.
In the case of B, its pure bloat.

Sense UI, if you’ve noticed, is kind of debatable depending on who you talk to. Even for WinMo6.5, Some like it, some don’t.
That HTC doesn’t feel the need to slap it on top of WP7 says quite a bit about WP7!!

      • tande04

Well HTC “can’t” slap it on top of WP7

      • Mitch

It doesn’t say jack about WM7.

It just says that Microsoft isn’t allowing it.

The current UI is shit, and I’d honestly rather see something like Sense ontop of it.

      • bob

ditto.. but why waste any money on it because it’s a dead end sinking ship

      • Louis Rossmann

All the phones with sense vs. stock android have god awful battery life.

Maybe the same is true here?

  • 3D Dot Hero

Can’t imagine it is worth the time for HTC to bother with a dead on arrival cellphone OS.

    • Jarrett

      Excellent point. So true. DOA.

  • tande04

nothing really shocking, just a good qod.

we’ve known from the beginning that all manufactures and carriers could do with wp7 is add tiles. there was a no skinning order from the get go.

we’ve already seen how sense will be integrated into wp7, http://www.bgr.com/2010/09/16/htcs-ui-for-windows-phone-7/ and i think it works pretty well for them.

    • Which Way is Up?

      Agreed

  • Babafooey

    I sense horseshit

  • Jack

huh? . . .they already said this. and this very site has videos of exactly how they plan on implementing sense ui…. jeez. a lot of redundancy around here lately.

    http://www.bgr.com/2010/09/16/htcs-ui-for-windows-phone-7/

other websites like engadget have video of an actual device running the same interface

Sense is awesome… it really is and on Android it’s perfection. I hope the new flavor of sense (Desire HD) comes to the D.INC. As far as Windows 7, I an’t see how they’re going to make inroads with it. I’ve looked at the Demos on Microsofts Windowsphone7 site and its about as unimpressive as OS6 for Rim. I used to own phones that ran both and have since moved on to Android. I gotta say iOS and Android w/ Sense are the 2 most elegant interfaces available on phones today. Microsoft should consider backing out of the mobile OS segment because it looks like they’re just gonna spin there wheels.

Great advise, so we are left with basically 2 choices, live under the tyranical rule of El Jobs or give up all our data for google to harvest and profit from. Tell me where to sign up!

    • boogalooboy

And btw, Sense SUCKS!!! How happy are you to wait months for updates to your core OS while HTC moves like molasses to update Sense? WP7 definitely doesnt need their crappy weather animations that serve no purpose nor the delay in getting updates. Wasnt it within the last 2 days Sony Ericsson said the X10 would get 2.1 at the end of October? 2.1 not 2.2? How about those galaxy S phones, where is the latest update for them? Thanks, but NO THANKS.

      • Swagger

Boogalooboy, your talking out of your ass. If you actually thought before you spoke you would know that the EVO was the first non N1 phone to get froyo. And judging by your lack of knowledge, the EVO has Sense UI.

  • 3 Phones Jugglin

Really, dont worry about it…its not like Sense is the only reason people tolerate WinMo 6.5 right now anyway…I guess they think WinMo 7 is “TOO GOOD” for it….leave HTC out..and watch your sales.

  • djkd

Yes there will be Sense UI,,..it’s called a Boot Rom hack!..lmao

  • webby

Launcher Pro Plus > Sense UI > WinMo7

Therefore, Sense is bound to be an improvement to this device.

  • DragonX

The key point they are saying is referring to the OS Home Interface…That does not mean there will not be a unique, innovated HTC Sense HUB (Tile) for WP7.

Think about…What is the Real Android experience?…This is an issue Google is facing, due to various developers & providers completely altering the interface…To some average people, HTC Sense is Android…they cannot tell the difference that technically its only an ‘add-on’…Of course, I love HTC Sense and I believe its a great experience – but I also believe WP7, as one person commented, “the goal is to have a unified user experience” – across all Window 7 Phones…The key to HTC Sense on Windows 7 will stem from its innovation to enhance the HUB experience rather than the entire OS…This is just my opinion. :)

  • Bob

    Good point

  • bob

HTC Sense on the HD2 was nothin to write home about btw… ridiculously limited compared to LauncherPro

  • Mrwirez

I wish HTC would dump Sense on Android too.. It sucks and is fugly.

  • techieg

In my opinion, nobody needs HTC Sense on their mobile device, at least not on WP7 devices that already have the best and most refreshing UI/UX available. Sense is just bloatware, a lot of what they have in there is unnecessary and of no use. It is a good thing that companies such as Apple and Microsoft are keeping such crap out of their OSes. The more control there is especially on a mobile device the better, however there can be too much control such as Apple as it with iPhone. Although they have a uniform user experience with any iPhone, Apple is the only one manufacturing the devices for only one wireless carrier whereas MS has WP7 for various OEMs but on uniform hardware, display sizes, and chipset so developers can easily develop on app that will work across the board and end users can have the same user experience no matter what WP7 device they choose. Android on the other hand is the sinking ship although it seems it is rising at this point just as the old Windows mobile did but it main strength of openness for enyone to do anything with without any control is also its main weakness because what that creates is a deeply fragmented mobile OS. Windows Mobile has gone down that road and for years it suffered for it, Apple saw that and never went down that road, Microsoft also does not see the need to go down that road again with WP7, these are smart choices. However Google with its pursuit of temporary revenue has done the exact opposite which is now why apps cannot run uniformly on all Android devices. People who seem to think HTC Sense is good is because they have been hooked by HTC to that UI as someone said, such that those people cannot tell if they are actually using the Android UI or not even though they are using the HTC Sense UI. My wife has the HTC Titlt 2 with WinMo 6.5 and HTC Sense, if that is what people are talking about, in my books it is nothing to write home about compared to the WP7 Metro UI. WP7 is destined to take the mobile industry with its extensive business, consumer and social features both on the phone and in the cloud, and rich developer experience that also extends a single app to Xbox and PC and the best development tools. While Android may seem like a contender alongside WP7, in the long run Android is fighting a losing battle mainly due to fragmentation as a result of too many different devices, display sizes, and chipsets that developers have to develop and test for.

That looks like an iPhone to me. Oh! Oh! that’s right ALL the new smart-phones do. The Apple design team is so far ahead of everyone else.
