Throwback Thursday: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out

General

If, like us, you owned a Nintendo Entertainment System, then there is a high likelihood you also owned Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out. When you loaded that sweet, 8-bit, Punch-Out cartridge into your NES system, you assumed the roll of Little Mac; a young and physically underwhelming boxer working his way up the professional ranks. Little Mac takes on a host of characters including: Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, Piston Honda, Don Flamenco, King Hippo, Great Tiger, Bald Bull, Soda Popinski, Mr. Sandman, and — the namesake — Mike Tyson. You had to dodge, block, jab, and (when permitted) uppercut your way to victory — all while keeping your eye on Little Mac’s ever dwindling heart meter. Victory was attained by knockout (KO), knocking your opponent down for 10 seconds or longer; technical knockout (TKO), knocking your opponent down three times in one round; or by decision, earning more points than your opponent at the end of three rounds. The game, which was first released in 1987, is thought by many to be one of the great, original NES classics. How about it? Did anyone ever successfully make it to the final round and conquer Iron Mike?

BGR Throwback Thursday is a weekly series covering our (and your) favorite gadgets, games, and software of yesterday and yesteryear.

I love the clip where you are running behind the trainer on a bicycle. YTMND had a lot of fun with that, remixing it and stuff: http://niggastolemybike.ytmnd.com/

    Classic! I love this game.

@Caddilac..I used to love Double Dribble too. I remember hitting half court shots on a regular in Double Dribble. The ball would sound like a grenade when you shot it from half court. And of course Mike Tyson Punch out was a great classic. Unfortunately, I have to admit. I never KO’d Mike. I could only get a TKO because I would avoid him the whole fight.

Double Dribble and Punch out are now on the Wii marketplace “Virtual Console” well worth some old school nes game play!

I remember going to the bathroom before I started because you couldn’t pause the game.

  • Modern Man

Just remember to blow out the bottom of the game cartridge if the game won’t load.

Played a perfect game… not hit even once. Impossible to beat Tyson in 1st round. BTW the code to get straight to tyson is forever ingrained in my brain: 007 373 5963

Anyone remember the arcade games? Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out? Essentially the same characters that were brought to the NES version… except better names. Like “Vodka Drunkenski” instead of Soda Popinski… some even made it to the SNES version of Super Punch-Out…

I’ve made it to Mike and even lasted three rounds and of course he won by decision. In my lifetime I’ve hit (punched) Mike 4 times!

I most certainly did conquer Iron Mike Tyson! I spent a lot of college afternoons (after class!) beating the likes of Piston Honda and Bald Bull!
I even beat Mr. Dream after they took out Mike Tyson in the Japanese version!

If u have a Wii I think its one of the games u can download.

  • knotkwiteright

I loved this game! I used to go to a bar by NYU that would have an 80′s night and had this game set up on an actual NES and if you beat Tyson you would get a free pitcher. I don’t think they do this anymore but it was awesome.

Man, yeah I beat Tyson. it was legendary! This one was one of the gateway games that brought us into the lightning reflex gaming generation.

  • David

Yeah. I remember Punch Out… Yes, the Super Macho Man was tough to beat. I never made it to Mike Tyson. I saw other people who were able to make it to Mike Tyson and it looks hard to play. That was so many years ago, too…..It was funny beating up Don flemenco and Class Joe…
