Roku introduces new 1080p players, Roku XD and Roku XDS

General

Today, Roku announced a new line of HD streaming video players, the Roku XD and the Roku XDS. To get your initial question out of the way: Yes, both new players can stream video in a full 1080p. The Roku XD, which will retail for $79.99, and the Roku XDS, which will retail for $99.99, both feature an HDMI-out port, Wi-Fi b/g/n, and an “instant replay” function (allowing you to skip back 7-seconds on streaming content without re-buffering). The XDS model will have dual-band Wireless-N technology, component video out, optical audio out, and USB port. The USB port will allow you to “play stored music, photos, and up to 1080p video using a USB playback channel, available as a free upgrade.” The original Roku HD player, which can stream in a maximum of 720p, is now available for a measly $59.99. All three players — the HD, XD, and XDS — are available at Amazon or Roku.com starting today.

I wish they could stream Hulu content as well — but as we all know Hulu sucks and is blocking this. This thing looks so much better than the craptastic Apple TV/iTV.

Hulu is coming to a lot of boxes this fall. I would be surprised if Roku wasn’t one of them.

Content Content Content. The hardware looks nice but what does it do that most LCD/LED TVs dont already do? My Samsung can stream most of those services. Google TV will have the same issue. The content is more important that a kill spec sheet. I dont care what it can do)hardware wise) if there is nothing on I want to watch or can watch for free over the air…..

No everyone has a fancy new TV with those features. I don’t think the box is necessarily aimed at you, rather to to that majority of people who bought HDTVs more than 2 years ago.
But going forward as more people replace their TVs with ones that do, I wonder where Roku’s future is.

    No MKV support? No, thanks.

Agreed!!! Why the hell wouldn’t they make this thing with more video support. Thought maybe I could ditch the WD TV Live and just have one media box.

When will these manufacturers realized that we want MKV and Video_TS support? Not all of us want reduced quality, compressed files.
