Sony Ericsson CEO: We have big surprises coming in the next few months

General

Publication Global Atlanta caught up with Sony Ericsson CEO, Bert Nordberg, at the grand opening of the company’s North American headquarters in Atlanta. When asked, “where do you see the phone industry going… what do you see as the next big development technology wise?” The CEO quipped, “we have some big surprises coming up in the next few months… but we never announce them in advance.” Sounds good to us. We’d love to see some high-quality Sony Ericsson hardware on American soil… delivered in a timely fashion, of course.

I guess they’re excited about the next product they release that consumers won’t buy, which is distinguishable from the last two dozen products people didn’t buy because it’s simply “better.”

It doesn’t help that the last cool Sony-Ericsson phone was in “The Matrix.”

      Wasn’t that a Nokia?

      • Wobbly

It was a Nokia in “The Matrix.” Kind of puts things in ‘perspective’ when the commenter lacks proper syntax, doesn’t it?

  • superchunk

Sounds like the rumored Playstation branded Android based smartphone I so dearly would love to see.

    ‘delivered in a timely fashion’

Why would they start doing that now?

  • grrr

    I miss my s710a from ’05.

The surprise will be if they stop releasing late to the party phones with outdated OS’s and no multitouch hardware.

  • w3apon

Probably is: “we will start rolling out Froyo for some of our Android devices” or better yet “multitouch is coming”.

The only way SonyEricsson (SE) is going to dig themselves out of the mess-of-a-brand-image they have so carefully and delicately generated over the years is to work closely with Google and bring PSP to Android. Given this is one of the two major weaknesses of Android (shite games and shite marketplace), if SE could do somethin worthwhile in this space, the company could make serious inroads in the eyes of consumers

All the current SE Android offerings are lacking in hardware, loaded with crapware and just dont compete with the slick HTC Sense and Samsung phones.

If they cant work towards and deliver a quality gaming experience to Android, coupled with a range of good high-end handsets, they should cut their losses and get out of the smartphone market entirely.

“but we never announce them in advance.”

Like we didn’t know about the fail Xperia a year before it showed up.

    Wood ruck SE.

  • Teddy

Better not be another damn Tablet.

    • Neo

no, it’s going to be ANOTHER Andriod phone.

  • Jeff Jones

Does he mean that they won’t keep trying to make proprietary crap like memory sticks or that they won’t keep charging 20% more than anyone else for the same product?

    Can’t wait to hear.

    • Step666

None of the new SE handsets use Memory Sticks any more.

As well as adopting MicroUSB as the universal charging/USB port, they’ve finally started adopting MicroSD making it a universal memory card type as well.

Since when did they have surprises?

“Sony Ericsson CEO: We have big surprises coming in the next few months”

He’s gonna paint a smiley face on his pecker.

    • KBlack

That probably wouldn’t be such a “big” surprise.

  • Stromson

They have a pretty cool logo; I hope they aren’t going to surprise us with a new one.

One of the greatest phones I’ve ever owned was the W810i. But unfortunately, like so many other manufacturers that run Android now, Sony just makes a box that is indistinguishable from all the others. The only thing they have that could potentially surprise is a PSP Phone. Given the fact that they have the nerve to push out Android 1.5 and 1.6 phones even now means that their definition of a “surprise” is our definition of “old news.

Why does this post’s headline remind me of Jack Nicholson in “The Shining” (You have a big surprise coming to you)?

  • Pshaw Right

    Sony-Ericsson + Android + PSP + 4G…believe it

  • DonnyKerabatsos

Sony Ericsson needs to go bankrupt. I don’t even like looking at their crap.

  • Viet

Sony Ericsson is like HTC without the slick software. I have an Xperia X10 as a backup handset. Their hardware is slick and sturdy even without the brushed aluminum accents. The curved back and soft touch matte plastic backplate(rare!) makes it feel quite comfortable in the hand even for a 4″ candy bar.

Honestly imo, they don’t have to do too much more to get competitive again in the handset game. Just up the specs and keep the Xperia X10 chassis. My dream SE Android reads a little like this:

Vanilla froyo/gingerbread, 800MHz Snapdragon, 4″ multitouch S-LCD panel+Gorilla glass, same 8mp shooter as on the X10 but w/ Xenon flash, and a 1.8mp front facing camera. Dare you to tell me that you wouldn’t buy that if SE could put something like that out in the market.

  • debbie barnes

They better working to bring their games to android.

  • Ericsson Pshhh!

lets make something that we wont wanna use ourselves LOL!!

I’ve loved sony products since I had a walkman back in Highschool, for the quality of their products it amazes me how durable they are, I’ve had their MP3 players that still worked after being soaked, thrown across the room, and having the faceplate torn off, same goes with the few phones of theirs I’ve owned. I’ve also been a huge fan of the psp since it came out and if they do the PSP/phone right it could definitely be the next big thing

  • justme

Their new feature handset with a 12.3 mp camera is pretty slick

  • Ben

Sony iPhone? are you retarded? I can’t believe you run a tech blog and would say something like that. I guess you’re waiting for the new xbox Ps3 too eh?
